24.01.2007Refreshed 4/8GB Zunes Coming?
From Long Zheng's blog:
"Several hours ago Microsoft released the Zune Spring 2008 Update with a new Zune software package (version 2.5).
Embedded in the resource files is an interesting image of a new red "Scorpius" (4/8GB) Zune. Instead of the model available today with a silver
backing and red touchpad, this had a black backing and black touchpad.
For any skeptics out there, the two images have notably different
positioned logos which confirms these are not the same images colored differently."

09.05.2008Battlefield 2 1.41 FULL Patch Released
EA has just released the
promised 1.41 patch for the
still very popular Battlefield
2 multiplayer slugfest. The
patch fixes one single
"intermittent sever side
crash bug" on the server
side, and there is no client
side changelog. But EA has
only released a full 536
monster update here, there is
no incremental patch folks.
More than likely the
"intermittent server side
crash" is the only bug they
fixed in this patch for both
servers and clients, and were
to lazy to make a smaller
incremental patch available.
Then again, maybe not. Who
knows.
536 megs
in this day and age isn't
really that much now is it? So
who am I kidding, all the BF2
players, myself included will
download the patch and happily
install it, so yeah. GG EA.
There is a separate
patch for clients and servers,
but I won't link the server
patch, since it is listed on
most of the links I will list
anyway. All you need to is go
to the server page to get that
version of the patch. Also
since there is no smaller
patch, all links are to the
full 536 meg monster of a
patch:

24.08.2007How To Warm Boot Windows XP/Vista
Unless you have to, it is many
times advantageous to warm
boot, or rather warm reboot,
Windows. In a warm reboot,
Windows restarts, but the
computer doesnt, skipping the
whole pre-Windows boot
screen/BIOS/startup sequence.
You an
easily specify a warm boot
in both Windows XP and Windows
Vista. Just hold down SHIFT on
your keyboard before clicking
Restart in Vista, or before
clicking OK in the restart
dialog in XP. Enjoy the extra
20 seconds!
Technically, the use of
the term warm boot is a bit
misused here, but the small
amount of time saved by not
re-running the BIOS can be
worth it.

17.08.2007Demand for Nvidia G80 chips weak as market expects G84/86
Nvidia's launch of its
DirectX 10-compliant GeForce
8800 GPU (codenamed G80)
earlier this month seems to
have failed to significantly
stir up demand for high-end
graphics cards, although the
new chips took a lead in 3D
computing processing,
according to sources at
Taiwan-based graphics card
makers.
Since the
G80 is preliminarily targeting
the high-end sector, the
sources pointed out that
Nvidia's forthcoming G84 and
G86 GPUs for the entry-level
and mid-range segments are
likely to play a key role in
the GPU market, with the two
new GPUs expected to debut in
the first quarter of 2007.
Although details of the G84
and G86 are still not
available, Nvidia has
completed the roadmap for the
two chips, with local graphics
card makers likely to receive
product samples in January or
February of next year, the
sources stated.

With all the hoopla about the remotely exploitable,
kernel-level buffer overflow discussed in today's security bulletin MS08-0001, what is the actual bug that triggers this? The
bulletin doesn't give all that much information. This movie (Flash required)
goes through the process of examining the 'pre-patch' version of tcpip.sys and comparing it against the 'post-patch' version
of tcpip.sys. This comparison yields the actual code that causes the overflow: A mistake in the calculation of the required size in a dynamic

02.02.2007Windows Live / MSN Messenger to force security upgrade
Anand, a Security PM for Windows Live Messenger,
posted (yesterday night) on the Inside Windows Live Messenger blog that rolling out in the next few weeks, if you haven't
already upgraded your Messenger to at least 8.1 (the current version released version), you will soon be forced to do so.
According to Anand:
We will soon configure the service such that any user on Windows XP or later system has to use Windows Live Messenger
8.1. When a user using an older version of Messenger tries to login, the client will help the user with a mandatory upgrade to Messenger 8.1.
Some of you might feel this inconvenient, but in order to protect you and protect the health of the network we have chosen to take this
step
And like it or not, the "health of the network" is a pretty valid reason for taking this extra step. It all boils down to
Security Bulletin MS07-054, "Vulnerability in MSN
Messenger and Windows Live Messenger Could Allow Remote Code Execution (942099)". This vulnerability, which has been fixed in 8.1 and the beta
version 8.5 "could allow remote code execution when a user accepts a webcam or video chat invitation from an attacker. An attacker who successfully
exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the affected system."
Whatever users out there who are still using
Windows 98 or 2000 are vulnerable as well, and for those systems
a newer
version of MSN Messenger 7 was released today. Available now, the MSN Messenger 7 upgrade will be forced as well, once the Windows Live Messenger
upgrades have completed

13.09.2007Major OEMs to enable DEP/NX in Vista PC BIOSs by default
Activewin reports that Michael Howard
mentions
on his
blog that recently MS had
all the major OEMs on campus
to discuss SDL (Security

asked the OEMs to enable
DEP/NX in the BIOS by default
on all their shipping PCs in
time for Windows Vista.
The reason for this
ask is pretty simple, for
ASLR
to be effective, DEP/NX must
be enabled by default too.
Michael mentions that
all the major OEMs (you know
who they are) have agreed to
not disable DEP/NX in their

06.12.2006Apple corners 1/26 of the English language
In the buildup to
Apple's presumed iPod announcement tomorrow
morning, we at CNET got to wondering: exactly how strong a hold does Apple have on this whole iBrand?
Seems that the proof is in
the googling.
Type the plain ol' English letter "i" into Google and hit return. Among the top 10
results, you'll get a Wikipedia entry on "
the ninth letter of the Latin alphabet" and a link to the IMDB page for the movie
I, Robot. But the No. 1 result links to the iTunes page on the
Apple site with the link text, "
Apple - iPod + iTunes." (Not to mention that
searching on "apple" returns only two results of 40 regarding the actual fruit.)
Is this branding at its most successful? Or
proof that industry has taken over all that is noncommercial in the world? What do you think?

05.09.2007AMD Broadens Energy Efficient Processor Lineup
When introduced in mid-2006,
Advanced Micro Devices'
lineup of dual-core energy
efficient processors with 65W
thermal design power (TDP)
consisted of just five models
(3800+, 4000+, 4200+, 4400+
and 4600+) and the dated
roadmap indicated that the
only update to the family
until Q2 2007 would be the
4800+ processor. At this point
AMD's lineup of Athlon 64 X2
chips with 65W TDP includes
nine processor models (3600+,
3800+, 4000+, 4200+, 4400+,
4600+, 4800+, 5000+ and 5200+)
with different specs and made
using 90nm or 65nm fabrication
process. AMD's
energy-efficient chips are
priced from $102 to
$232.
In
addition, AMD ships six
processor models for
applications that require
power consumption as low as
35W, two processors that fit
into 45W thermal envelope, two
chips for previous-generation
socket 754 platform with 51W
and 59W TDP as well as tens of
chip models with typical
thermal power of 62W.
Unfortunately, the company
does not indicate thermal
design power of its processors
within the model number,
making the information harder
to find for end-users and
system integrators seeking
low-power chips.

06.03.2007MSN Premium 9.5 Released
Much to our surprise, MSN
released version 9.5 of MSN
Explorer/MSN Internet Access
to subscribers as an update on
Friday. The release appears
to fix a number of issues
surrounding upgrades to
Windows Internet Explorer 7
and Windows Live Messenger.
The release also introduces
Digital Image Suite as a new
piece of software to the suite
MSN Premium was originally
advertised as a benefit.

View:
MSN
Premium
News
Source:
LiveSide
At launch
Microsoft said, "If purchased
separately, the services
combined in MSN Premium would
cost more than $350 a year and
require customers to
independently manage and
update them." With an MSN
subscription, Microsoft also
bundles a premium version of
Encarta and MSN Money online,
Microsoft Office Outlook
Connector and PictureIt!
Express 9. Now PictureIt!
Express 9 has finally been
upgraded to the Standard
Edition of Digital Image
Suite. MSN has updated the
core, MSN Explorer, as well as
Outlook Connector, but the
original suite of software has
remained the same until now.
Unfortunately, with the update
of 9.5, there is no update for
Outlook Connector
compatibility with Outlook
2007, but Vista has been
reported to work fine with MSN
Premium.
Some
additional updated features
include:
- New
Microsoft? Phishing Filter
service helps block known
phishing or fraudulent Web
sites and allows you to report
new sites or provide feedback
to the Microsoft? Phishing
Filter Web site about
potential Phishing Web sites.
- Search now enables
users of Windows? Desktop
Search to search your PC for
images, music files, and
documents fast. The new Search
bar allows you to search the
web Web or your PC right from
the dashboard. Includes a list
of recent searches on a quick
pick list!
This
is a big surprise since
Microsoft has been so
aggressive in segregating
services from content between
Windows Live and MSN,
respectively. However, if
version 10.0 comes along, we
might see Windows Live
Premium/Explorer instead.
Microsoft obviously doesn't
want to jump ship for fear
that MSN Dial-up/Premium
customers might switch to AOL
. We probably
won't see Microsoft
discontinue MSN Explorer until
Windows Live Mail Desktop and
other services launch in final
versions, since MSN will need
to transition customers to the
new software. They've
already set up a way to easily
transition Dial-up customers
with seperate software, MSN
Connection Center.
Most customers have most
likely received the update as
it was scheduled for the third
week of November, according to
a Technical Support
Representative from MSN.
There is an auto-update
feature in MSN Explorer,
although the software can also
be updated manually through
Add/Remove Programs. The
auto-update will only install
MSN Explorer 9.5, other
features like Digital Image
Suite will have to be updated
manually with a 245 MB
download. Hopefully updated
CDs will be going out soon,
they can be ordered at

Windows Vista Beta 2 /

Microsoft have started
releasing updates during the

this one is of particular
interest due to the fact that

Install this update
to fix an issue where in the
presence of Internet Protocol

be hit on multi-processor (or
hyper-threaded) systems
causing memory corruption,
leading to a system
crash.
It is
unknown if this affects the

fiile date is 27th so it
probably does.

While the planned release schedule for XP SP3 stated MSDN/TechNet

DS/Wii Connectivity on the Horizon?
James Honeywell, DS Product
Manager, shed some light on
the future of DS/Wii
connectivity:
"You will definitely see Wii
and DS interoperability as
soon as we have it finished,'
said Honeywell. 'We haven't
made any announcements over
specific software for
connectivity, but there are
definitely a number of
exciting things in creation
which we want to bring to
market as soon as possible.
We're hopeful that will be
next year."
...
"For
example, the connectivity
between Xbox 360 and PC is
very much based in streaming
video and other media. The
link-up between Wii and DS
will be much more about
offering new forms of
gameplay, fun and interaction.
It will offer yet another new
set of experiences for the
whole family."
This comes after Nintendo
introduced connectivity into
Pokemon Battle Revolution. Is
it possible we could see
connectivity in future Mario
and Metroid titles? Only time
will tell.

Volume License Key Changes,
End to VLK Piracy?
"Corporate Edition" versions
of Windows have been the
blessing of both IT workers
and casual pirates since the
days of Windows 95, when the
operating system first started
asking for a license key on
installation.
Large firms and OEMs who did
not want to go through the
hassle of typing in a CD key
for every install received
Volume License Keys (VLKs)
that could be used on as many
installs as necessary.
Microsoft relied on the honor
system to ensure that
companies did not abuse this
privilege, but it looks as if
with Vista this system may be
ending:
"We
are making changes to the
process to Vista and a new
approach to VLK licensing,"
Mike Sievert, corporate vice
president of Windows client
marketing for Microsoft told
CRN during a recent interview.
"We're training our
enterprise customers and
we'll do some key management
for customers that's more
automated and makes reporting
easier."

The
exact details of the "new
approach" to VLKs haven't
been made clear, but Ward

is "introducing the notion of
a key management server" for

100 Gb/s Internet2 completed
At its Fall 2007 member meeting, the Internet 2 consortium announced that its updated infrastructure is ready to go online and provide an initial
capacity of 100 Gb/s to researchers and educators.
The blazingly fast network connection was demonstrated for the first time when
the organization established a connection between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and Fermilab in Batavia, IL and was able to transfer a
third of a terabyte within five minutes over a 10 GB/s connection.
Internet 2 is often confused with a next-generation Internet
infrastructure for the public. However, the Internet 2 is limited to currently 207 connected universities that use the high-speed network as
infrastructure to quickly exchange data and test new technologies that one day could find their way into the public Internet.

Windows Home Server Beta/CTP Preview
Paul Thurrott: Back in
January, I posted a preview of
Microsoft's Windows Home
Server, a product that
should send shivers of delight
down the spine of any home
computing enthusiast. Windows
Home Server, or WHS, is the
product we've been waiting
for quite a long time, and
then some: In addition to the
expected digital media sharing
features, WHS also offers a
pervasive platform for
full-home PC backups, hot-add
expandable storage, and remote
access. And best of all, it
will be made available both as
a standalone software package
(which you can install on any
PC or server) and as a bundle
with specially-made home
server hardware.
WHS is expected in late
2006, but since my initial
preview, Microsoft has made a
number of improvements to this
product. First, the company
released Beta 2 (see my
screenshot galleries), the
first beta version of WHS to
ship to users outside of
Microsoft. WHS Beta 2 offered
a decent look at the features
I'd described back in my
preview, so I didn't provide
an overview of that version.
But since then, most recently,
Microsoft has shipped another
beta release. Dubbed the April
2007 CTP (Community Technology
Preview), this WHS release
offers dramatic improvements
and a near-feature-complete
look at this evolving product.
The April CTP also comes on
the heels of news that
Microsoft has shipped a
software development kit (SDK)
that will allow enterprising
third party developers to ship
WHS software add-ons that will
extend this product in
exciting ways. Taken together,
we now have a much better idea
of how WHS is shaping up.

Samsung makes Blu-Ray/HD DVD hybrid official
Samsung this afternoon
revealed final details of its

Confirming
early details, the BD-UP5000

enhanced features of either

picture-in-picture commentary.
It should also stand as the
best Blu-Ray player in the
company's line, Samsung
boasts. More recent decoding
can play movies at 24 frames
per second without triggering
pulldown conversion, and
output to HDTVs is sent
through HDMI 1.3 for deeper
colors when supported by an
attached TV.
The
UP5000 should go on sale in
late fall at a price of $1,049
and will be accompanied in
stores by the HT-BD2, an
all-in-one home theater kit
that includes both an
1,100-watt, 7.1-channel
surround speaker setup and an
integrated Blu-Ray player that
goes without the advanced

the stand-alone BD-P2400. The

Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup
Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup
copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2002 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed

With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back
them up.
Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single
.PST file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), but you might also have an additional .PST file that you
use for archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST files.

How To Create a Bootable DVD for Windows Vista (or any Windows for that matter)
If it's been a while since you've needed a boot disk for your Windows machine, you may just be struggling with how exactly to do it. It's not like
the old Windows 98 boot floppy where I could just go into Windows Explorer and make one with a couple of quick clicks of the mouse. However, you need
not worry, since the current process is surprisingly well documented by Microsoft.
What may seem, at first, to be a complex task
is actually fairly simple. There are essentially seven steps to create a bootable DVD or bootable UFD (USB Flash Drive), all of which are command line
based. While the seven steps are relatively straightforward, the Microsoft article outlining those steps has a slightly obscure title: "Walkthrough:
Create a Custom Windows PE Image." Anyway, this Walkthrough, for all intents and purposes, is a step-by-step how-to for creating a bootable DVD
disk.

Apple/Microsoft in talks for ActiveSync before iPhone launched
Exchange support in the iPhone has been rumored almost as long as the iPhone itself was rumored to exist. Much as the iPhone turned out to be real, so
has ActiveSync on the iPhone. Microsoft released an interview with Terry Myerson, corporate vice president for
Exchange, which includes a very interesting tidbit. Mr. Myserson says that Apple and Microsoft were in talks about licensing ActiveSync before the
iPhone was announced. Furthermore, he was in daily contact with Apple VP Phil Schiller (when Schiller wasn't making up Apple rumors, of course) for two weeks while they set the
details of the agreement between the two tech giants.

Weird Windows Vista File/Folder Manipulation "Bug"
I think this could be considered as one of the weirder but non-critical "bugs" in both Vista RTM and Vista SP1. Thanks to Plax for the find:
1. Create a folder somewhere and put a file inside
2. Then open an Open file dialog from some application
3. Go
in the folder with the file and cut the file then rename the folder and paste the file somewhere else
4. Then you'll find out that instead
of the file a folder appeared

Mozilla Patches QuickTime/Firefox Flaw
Mozilla has released a patch today for its popular Firefox webbrowser which ditches the ability to run arbitrary script from the Firefox command line,
a quick fix for a year-old QuickTime bug that could be used to take over user systems. Security researcher Petko D. Petkov on Sept. 12 posted
proof-of-concept code showing that the low-risk, year-old QuickTime bug could easily be turned into a high-risk attack on Firefox, Internet Explorer,
Skype and other programs. Petkov-aka pdp-showed how QuickTime media formats can be used to get into Firefox, leading to full browser compromise and
perhaps even to compromise of the underlying operating system.

Wikipedia / Virtual Earth Mashup
Sarah Perez: Now this is a cool mashup and its built right into Virtual Earth! In Wikipedia, you may have
noticed that some articles have coordinates in the upper-right hand side of the page that locate that place on a map. (See this example). Clicking on the coordinates from the Wikipedia entry will take you to you a map.
But if you want to go the other way - from a map to Wikipedia - then you've got to check out what the Virtual Earth team has done. They've been indexing all these
links in their Spatial Search and Explore indexes so you can surf the maps with Wikipedia displaying in the sidebar. If you want to try it out for
yourself, turn on Live Map's Explore feature and then select the Wikipedia Tag, or just click this link to see
it in action now.

Cross-browser Firefox/IE flaw worsens
The browser flaw which allows
attackers to hijack a computer
by using Internet Explorer to
launch Firefox is affecting
other applications as well.
Security researchers Nate
McFeters, Billy Rios and
Raghav Dube have disclosed
information and working
exploit code for a similar
vulnerability in Trillian.
Like the Firefox attack, the
Trillian exploit uses a
Uniform Resource Identifier
(URI) function as the point of
attack.
The URI
allows the browser to launch a
third-party application on the
user's system in much the
same way that a URL is used to
access a web page. When the
user visits a
specially-crafted page, the
application is launched and
attack code is run to crash
the application and execute
code. The attack could be used
to remotely install malware on
a user's system.

Microsoft denies dual-boot Linux/Windows XO laptops are on its agenda
It looks like the head of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Chief Nicholas Negroponte is not only alienating Intel, but Microsoft, too.
A day after published reports quoting Negroponte as saying OLPC XO laptops would dual boot
Linux and Windows, Microsoft is denying that the company is pursuing such a plan. According to a statement from a Microsoft spokesman:
“While we have investigated the possibility in the past, Microsoft is not developing dual-boot Windows XP support for One Laptop Per
Child’s XO laptop. As we announced in December, Microsoft plans to publish formal design guidelines early this year that will assist
flash-based device manufacturers in designing machines that enable a high-quality Windows experience. Our current goal remains to provide a
high-quality Windows experience on the XO device.
“In addition, there will be limited field trials in January 2008 of Windows XP for One Laptop per Child’s XO laptop.
Microsoft recommends contacting the company directly for any further updates.”
This wasn’t the first time that Negroponte
took it upon himself to preannounce Microsoft’s OLPC plans...
