07.09.2009Phoenix Instant Boot BIOS starts loading Windows in under a second
Phoenix is showing off a few interesting things at IDF, but the real standout is their new Instant Boot BIOS, a highly optimized UEFI implementation
that can start loading an OS in just under a second. Combined with Windows 7's optimized startup procedure, that means you're looking at incredibly
short boot times -- we saw a retrofitted Dell Adamo hit the Windows desktop in 20 seconds, while a Lenovo T400s with a fast SSD got there in under 10.
It's pretty slick stuff, and it should be out soon -- check a video after the break...

25.09.2009Finland makes broadband a legal right
Many people consider having broadband access a privilege but if you live in Finland, its become a legal right. Starting in July 2010 it will be a
legal right for every person to have a broadband connection of at least 1MB and by 2015 everyone will have access to a 100MB connection. While not
the first country to make broadband a legal right, that title goes to the Swiss, it does show a growing trend of how integrated broadband technologies
are into our lives. Not much else is known about the new law that will make broadband a legal right.

04.09.2009Microsoft's COFEE forensics tool leaks online
Microsoft's secret Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor (COFEE) has leaked online, available for all. COFEE is a forensics tool,
approximately 15MB in size that fits on a USB drive for law enforcement officials to use in PC forensics. According to Microsoft: With COFEE, law
enforcement agencies without on-the-scene computer forensics capabilities can now more easily, reliably, and cost-effectively collect volatile live
evidence. An officer with even minimal computer experience can be tutored—in less than 10 minutes—to use a pre-configured COFEE device.
This enables the officer to take advantage of the same common digital forensics tools used by experts to gather important volatile evidence, while
doing little more than simply inserting a USB device into the computer.

09.11.2009Surfing the Google Wave
To write a simple message, whether by Email or text, has for a long time been a method to announce one's happiness, anger and even one's
tardiness. It's arguable that these virtual delivery services are somewhat impersonal; there are only the words on a computer screen — this
is devoid of all other sensations. However, the word can be a powerful weapon to wield. One misses the little details, though. A smile, a happy
feeling cannot be described in words as much as it can be simply shown. Just weeks ago Google opened up the much anticipated Google Wave service.
Its premise is one of ingenuity, to say the least.

While our focus at Phoronix is on testing hardware under Linux, we remain friendly and interested in other BSD and UNIX operating systems too,
