The Pirate Bay officially sunk

Today marks victory for Swedish authorities and Hollywood and a sad day for file sharing. Today the Swedish Authorities have ordered The Pirate Bay to be taken offline immediately or the ISP could face heavy fines of 500,000 Kroner ($70,600 US) a day. The Pirate Bay's ISP had no choice but to comply and disconnect the website from the Internet. The take down of The Pirate Bay comes 3 days earlier than expected, as the site was going offline on August 27 or legalize the site before then, which was unlikely to happen.

Finland makes broadband a legal right

Many people consider having broadband access a privilege but if you live in Finland, its become a legal right. Starting in July 2010 it will be a legal right for every person to have a broadband connection of at least 1MB and by 2015 everyone will have access to a 100MB connection. Phoenix Instant Boot BIOS starts loading Windows in under a second

Phoenix is showing off a few interesting things at IDF, but the real standout is their new Instant Boot BIOS, a highly optimized UEFI implementation that can start loading an OS in just under a second. Combined with Windows 7's optimized startup procedure, that means you're looking at incredibly short boot times -- we saw a retrofitted Dell Adamo hit the Windows desktop in 20 seconds, while a Lenovo T400s with a fast SSD got there in under 10. It's pretty slick stuff, and it should be out soon -- check a video after the break...

Microsoft's COFEE forensics tool leaks online

Microsoft's secret Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor (COFEE) has leaked online, available for all. COFEE is a forensics tool, approximately 15MB in size that fits on a USB drive for law enforcement officials to use in PC forensics. According to Microsoft: With COFEE, law enforcement agencies without on-the-scene computer forensics capabilities can now more easily, reliably, and cost-effectively collect volatile live evidence. An officer with even minimal computer experience can be tutored—in less than 10 minutes—to use a pre-configured COFEE device. This enables the officer to take advantage of the same common digital forensics tools used by experts to gather important volatile evidence, while doing little more than simply inserting a USB device into the computer.

Surfing the Google Wave

To write a simple message, whether by Email or text, has for a long time been a method to announce one's happiness, anger and even one's tardiness. It's arguable that these virtual delivery services are somewhat impersonal; there are only the words on a computer screen — this is devoid of all other sensations. However, the word can be a powerful weapon to wield. One misses the little details, though. A smile, a happy feeling cannot be described in words as much as it can be simply shown. Just weeks ago Google opened up the much anticipated Google Wave service. Its premise is one of ingenuity, to say the least.

Nokia Beats Apple in Smartphone Shipments Worldwide

With the recent squabbling over the Motorola Droid's status as the next potential "iPhone killer, one could assume Apple has become the competitor to beat in the smartphone marketplace. Mac OS X 10.6 Brings Serious Performance Gains

While our focus at Phoronix is on testing hardware under Linux, we remain friendly and interested in other BSD and UNIX operating systems too, including Mac OS X . With the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" we have been particularly interested in it considering the technological advancements that have been made in this update thanks to their large focus on improving the performance of Mac OS X. With that said, we have spent all week working on a grand Mac OS X benchmarking showdown by comparing the performance of the retail build of Mac OS X 10.6.0 to the earlier Mac OS X 10.5.8 through a number of different quantitative tests. We firmly believe that as of right now these are the most detailed desktop performance numbers available concerning Snow Leopard, but we already have more figures on the way. We have performance numbers from not just one Mac computer, but two different setups. Here's to the first 60+ tests we ran!

Apple causes legal distress over revamped Woolworths logo

Halfway through last year, the company Woolworths Supermarkets announced that it was going to revamp its logo, in addition to making some other changes, altering the entire corporate branding strategy. The company chose an "an abstract leaf symbol" as the new logo, hoping things would be fine… but unfortunately, they weren't, particularly for Apple, Inc. AppleInsider has reported that the Cupertino-based company Apple, known mostly for the the iPod, the Mac, and the iPhone, believes Woolworths' logo is far too similar to its own, wanting it to be changed. BT handed 100,000 file-sharer's IP addresses from BPI

The BPI have accused BT of not doing enough to prevent music piracy, after handing them 100,000 IP addresses of users allegedly caught sharing copyrighted files, according to an article by TorrentFreak posted yesterday. BT said it could cost ISPs £365m a year to take action against piracy, although the chief executive of the BPI, Geoff Taylor, claims that BT's figures are exaggerated. The BPI said it was "shameful" that BT had nothing about the 100,000 IP addresses it gave them, however chief of BT's consumer division, John Petter, said that taking such action could cost £365m a year, a whole £165m more than what the BPI claims the music industry will lose this year, due to piracy.

This is why Microsoft is in work with the industry to allow more freedom and more creativity in how you build content, which is always good, and the new features in DirectX 11 are going to allow people to do that.
