Phoenix Instant Boot BIOS starts loading Windows in under a second

Phoenix is showing off a few interesting things at IDF, but the real standout is their new Instant Boot BIOS, a highly optimized UEFI implementation that can start loading an OS in just under a second. Combined with Windows 7's optimized startup procedure, that means you're looking at incredibly short boot times -- we saw a retrofitted Dell Adamo hit the Windows desktop in 20 seconds, while a Lenovo T400s with a fast SSD got there in under 10. It's pretty slick stuff, and it should be out soon -- check a video after the break...

AMD invited Legit Reviews up to their private suite in the hotel that Quakecon 2009 is being hosted at for a first look at gaming on one of their upcoming DirectX 11 graphics cards. This graphics card has not been officially named yet, but it has the internal code name of 'Evergreen' and was first shown to the media back at Computex over in Taiwan earlier this year. Once we arrived in the AMD suite we were introduced to not one, but two systems running DX11 hardware! One system was setup running a bunch of DX11 SDKs and the other system was running the demo for the upcoming game title Wolfenstein. The Wolfenstein video game demo uses just DX9, so it really doesn't show off DirectX 11 performance or functionality, but it does show that the GPU is up and running...

No apps left behind: A backup checklist before reinstalling

Whether you're upgrading or repairing your computer, at some point in time you'll be faced with the task of reinstalling your operating system, especially in the Windows world. As I can personally attest, most of the frustration with starting fresh comes from losing your installed programs and customized settings with them. Sure, you can create tweaked installation discs to automate the process and have all your drivers, programs and settings already in place. The problem is that most people won't reinstall Windows more than once or twice a year. When the time comes to use your customized OS disc, new versions of your programs and drivers will have been released.

Mac OS X 10.6 Brings Serious Performance Gains

While our focus at Phoronix is on testing hardware under Linux, we remain friendly and interested in other BSD and UNIX operating systems too, including Mac OS X . With the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" we have been particularly interested in it considering the technological advancements that have been made in this update thanks to their large focus on improving the performance of Mac OS X. With that said, we have spent all week working on a grand Mac OS X benchmarking showdown by comparing the performance of the retail build of Mac OS X 10.6.0 to the earlier Mac OS X 10.5.8 through a number of different quantitative tests. We firmly believe that as of right now these are the most detailed desktop performance numbers available concerning Snow Leopard, but we already have more figures on the way. We have performance numbers from not just one Mac computer, but two different setups. Here's to the first 60+ tests we ran!

There's a new upload center to store and share documents online - perhaps through live mesh - or it could be the Office Web Applications/Office Live Workspaces.

AppleInsider has reported that the Cupertino-based company Apple, known mostly for the the iPod, the Mac, and the iPhone, believes Woolworths' logo is far too similar to its own, wanting it to be changed. The BPI said it was "shameful" that BT had nothing about the 100,000 IP addresses it gave them, however chief of BT's consumer division, John Petter, said that taking such action could cost £365m a year, a whole £165m more than what the BPI claims the music industry will lose this year, due to piracy.
