Microsoft's Not the Only One Doing Mobile Mail
The same day the beta invites started going out for Windows Live Mail Mobile,
Google launched Gmail Mobile. So far, Gmail Mobile is supporting relatively few cell phones and PDAs and only those in the U.S.. But wider coverage is coming soon, Google claims. And you can get
Gmail Mobile on your Blackberry, too. And speaking of Google, it's sounding like Microsoft's nemesis bested Microsoft in the contest for whose search engine would power Google search, going forward. As part of that deal,
Google reportedly will invest $1 billion in AOL, in exchange for a five percent stake.

More Windows Mobile 7 screenshots emerge with Zune UI
WMPoweruser has posted some more alleged screenshots of Windows Mobile 7. The screenshots Neowin sighted earlier showed the Today Screen and the Maps

Unlike the earlier screenshots which had a date of October 16, these screenshots reveal no such date details, so as to give away the time this UI was
devised and tested. If these screenshots are from Windows Mobile 7, then the Zune UI confirms the recent rumor that Zune is indeed coming to Windows
Mobile 7.

Microsoft confirms Zune coming to Windows Mobile devices
It has been long rumoured that Microsoft would introduce Zune software onto the Windows Mobile operating system.
In an interview with CIO
magazine Steve Ballmer confirms that Microsoft is looking to port the software to Windows Mobile devices.
When questioned why Microsoft
developed the zune, Ballmer replied:
"At the end of the day, one of the big trends is that all content is going digital. And if we
don’t have the software and services that are useful, helpful and valuable for the consumption of music and video, we are sort of not really a
player.
Now, we built the Zune hardware with the Zune software - and what you’ll see more and more over time is that the Zune
software will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc."
This is
the strongest indication that Microsoft will be porting the software. We're not sure when exactly but you can bet that Windows Mobile 7 will have
it included.

Microsoft looking for ways to converge Windows Mobile, Zune
Microsoft appears to be looking for new ways to tie Windows Mobile phones and Zune media players together, although a Zune phone remains unlikely.
Over the weekend, Microsoft developer "Mel" asked an open question on the Windows Mobile blog: "What are some ways the Zune player and a Windows
Mobile device can work better together?"
Since then, more than 50 commenters have suggested ways that Microsoft might converge the two
devices. The most common idea is to essentially replace the Windows Media Player on Windows Mobile devices with Zune software. "I proposed that WMP
should be fazed out in favor of a combined WMP/Zune player which will synch with both Windows Media AND Zune, instead of having to have two separate
apps with two different libraries for each device," wrote one commenter using the name Colin Walker.

Zune 2: An intimate conversation with the Zune team
Cesar Menendez, a Microsoft employee working on Zune, had some interesting things to note when Channel 10 interviewed him. It turns out that the newly
released Zune 4 ($150), Zune 8 ($200) and Zune 80 ($250), the names of which you may have guessed correspond to the device capacity in GB,
aren't the only part of the Zune experience that received a revamp. The Zune software and the Zune Marketplace have been recoded from the ground up.
Cesar also throws out a statistic: the Zune Marketplace now has 3 million tracks available, 1 million of which are DRM-free.

Zune 2.5 Now Available
Microsoft has quite a bit in store for the Zune with its new Zune version 2.5 software update. The greatest additions are the new Zune Card

controls, meta data editing, auto playlists and other tweaks have also been included.
On the marketing front, Microsoft is really

Microsoft readies Zune Firmware Update 2.3
The Microsoft Zune team plans to soon release firmware version 2.3 for the portable multimedia device. The download link isn’t up yet, but
I’ll be updating this newspost when it does go up. The update is not a major one, meaning no new features will be added. It does, however,
address a battery issue that a minor amount of Zune 30 and Zune 80 users have been experiencing. More specifically, the problem occurs when users
suspend their Zune hard drives by holding down the play/pause button – in some cases the battery continues to drain. The firmware update will
also reportedly improve device recognition as well as stability and reliability during syncing (both wirelessly and while connected to a PC).
