Microsoft clears up Zune 80 availability issues

Those of you searching in vain for a Zune 80 may not have longer to wait -- Cesar over at Zune Insider has just posted a note about the situation, saying that all the Zunes are ready and shipping, but the Zune 80 won't be widespread for the next 7-10 days.

Apparently Microsoft's sales forecasts called for it to produce more flash Zunes, but the strong reaction from the press and consumers has led to increased interest in the Zune 80 instead -- which seems like the sort of thing you commission sales forecasts for, but hey, live and learn. Anyway, Microsoft's sorted things out and scaled up Zune 80 production, so all of you aching to get 80GBs deep into the social should be good by next week.

Zune 2: An intimate conversation with the Zune team

Cesar Menendez, a Microsoft employee working on Zune, had some interesting things to note when Channel 10 interviewed him. It turns out that the newly released Zune 4 ($150), Zune 8 ($200) and Zune 80 ($250), the names of which you may have guessed correspond to the device capacity in GB, aren't the only part of the Zune experience that received a revamp. The Zune software and the Zune Marketplace have been recoded from the ground up. Cesar also throws out a statistic: the Zune Marketplace now has 3 million tracks available, 1 million of which are DRM-free.

Review of the Week: Zune 80 by MrEggsalad

As part of the Sunday's Member-Written Review of the Week, the front page brings you yet another review written by one of our very own members and posted in Reviews by Members for Members. This subforum is predominantly hardware reviews but software reviews have an equal chance of being picked. This week I have stumbled upon MrEggsalad's review of the Zune 80 MP3 player.

" The Zune 80 was released on November 13, 2007. I had this item pre-ordered as I've had not the best luck with iPods (3 of them, all battery issues even after replaced batteries) and wished to havne a digital music player, however due to the want of this product and short supply I only just got it on the 26th of November. Read whole review or scroll right to the bottom for quick list of pros and cons "

Microsoft says "sorry" with free Valentine's Zune 80 players

Microsoft's special Valentine's Day edition of the Zune (Red Zune 80) is apparently more popular than the company expected. The Zune Originals creation that was announced just three weeks ago has already been through one announced product delay, but now it looks like Valentine's Day will come and go with most customers feeling unrequited love.

Today we've heard from readers who say that Microsoft is mending broken hearts with some TLZ: tender loving Zunage . Microsoft is e-mailing customers who are on the cusp of not receiving their special Zune orders on time, saying that while they are trying their best to get orders out in time, they might not make it. Maybe your Valentine won't mind, however, because Microsoft says that they are refunding customer's money, too. If you're one of the unlucky people to be sitting on the cusp of a February 14 delivery date, then all of the sudden you're not so unlucky, since you're getting a free Zune out of the deal.

Zune: software update Sep. 15 & Zune HD is only Zune left

Engadget spotted that Microsoft has confirmed the new Zune software update will be made available on September 15. Watch for the update on September 15 so you'll be ready to enjoy the full Zune experience." It's expected that the latest update will include more HD video options and an apps marketplace. Zune HD applications were confirmed by a Microsoft official in late August. Earlier this week Microsoft company officials confirmed that current Zune models, the Zune 8, 16 80, and 120, have all been discontinued and that the Zune HD will be the only Zune device manufactured.

Zune 80 scarcer than a Wii, Microsoft blames popularity

The new Zunes are outmostly. While availability of the 4GB and 8GB flash models is excellent, the black 80GB hard drive model has been hard to find. Microsoft assures us that "high demand" is to blame.

Our review of the flash models showed them to be attractive and competent players, but with styling reminiscent of an earlier generation of iPod nano and a fatter size to boot. They're nice, but the Zune 80 looks to hit the sweet spot with its large storage area, premium in-ear headphones, glossy black finish, glass screen, and the attractive Zune interface. It's also 30 percent smaller than the original Zune 30, which remains on sale but has increasingly come to resemble a music-playing brick over the last year.

Microsofts Zune short in supply?

Who would have thought that? Market research firm iSuppli today said that Microsoft in fact is not meeting market demand for its Zune portable media player. However, the reason may not be just a jump in demand for certain models, but an overly cautious market strategy of Microsoft as well, the market research firm speculated.

Reports about out-of-stock Zunes have surfaced from time to time over the past weeks, and some even suggested that Zune may be outselling at least some of Apples iPods. iSuppli added its insight in the current PMP market today, stating that the Zune sales spike was largely limited to the śdeeply discounted Zune 30 modelť. Short supply of the newer Zune 80 however may much more due to the fact that Microsoft may have śerred on the side of caution when placing initial orders for the new Zunes, which include the Hard-Disk-Drive (HDD) based Zune 80 as well as the flash- memory-based Zune 4 and 8,ť iSuppli analyst Chris Crotty suggested.

Zune Holiday Offers Announced

Microsoft’s Zune is about to experience the holidays, retail style. Starting tomorrow, major retailers will begin offering various deals, price cuts and giveaways related to the Zune 4, Zune 8 and Zune 80. Maybe we’ll finally hear more about the rumoured Zune 16! One can dream, right? Expect these discounts and sales to be updated frequently, all the way through January. Zune retail partners Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City and Walmart are behind the deals, which are obviously going to be limited to the United States. Man is it more and more tempting for me, a fellow Canadian, to cross that border and take advantage of the high Canadian dollar.

Zune 80 battery test results

CNET Labs have just published the results of their Zune 80 audio-only battery drains and the numbers are somewhat disappointing. Microsoft rated the Zune 80 for 30 hours of audio playback with the Wi-Fi feature turned off. Lab testing revealed that the Zune 80 is realistically capable of 22 hours of audio playback with the Wi-Fi feature turned off, or 18.5 hours with the Wi-Fi feature enabled.

While 22 hours is certainly better than the 13 hours we got from the first-generation Zune, it's nowhere close to the 45 hours we were able to get from the competing 80GB iPod Classic.

Use Windows Live Hotmail, win a Zune

Buzznet's Valentine Zune Contest may be over, but The Zune A Day Giveaway is only beginning to heat up. Microsoft readies Zune Firmware Update 2.3

The Microsoft Zune team plans to soon release firmware version 2.3 for the portable multimedia device. The download link isn’t up yet, but I’ll be updating this newspost when it does go up. The update is not a major one, meaning no new features will be added. It does, however, address a battery issue that a minor amount of Zune 30 and Zune 80 users have been experiencing. More specifically, the problem occurs when users suspend their Zune hard drives by holding down the play/pause button – in some cases the battery continues to drain. The firmware update will also reportedly improve device recognition as well as stability and reliability during syncing (both wirelessly and while connected to a PC).

Microsoft's limited Zune 80 Stock sells out way too quickly

The 80GB Zune media player Microsoft Corporation launched Tuesday has sold out across the Web, to the dismay of online shoppers and delight of the world’s largest software maker. Amazon was forced to announce that their pre-ordered devices for November 13 shipping would not be sent for 10 more days. Anya Waring, an Amazon spokeswoman, said quite a few Zunes have “ definitely shipped and sold ” but that Amazon is being given a limited number each week.

While Web retailers have 4 GB and 8 GB versions of the second-generation Zunes in stock, the 80 GB music player is not available on Amazon, Best Buy or Circuit City’s Web sites. Microsoft said it prioritized the manufacture of the smaller Zune 4 and Zune 8 devices, and that more of the 80 GB version should be on shelves, physical and virtual, in the next 10 to 14 days. Whatever the reason for the lack of stock, for rumours will tell you Microsoft is in fact having manufacturing troubles, it is still quite amazing that the product managed to sell out in just a few days.
