Zune gets 1-Click Podcast Subscriptions

Podcasters can now plan to display a Zune icon or chicklet graphic on their websites to enable an easy “1-Click Podcast Subscription” process for podcast listeners or viewers. This 1-Click process will launch the new Zune Marketplace software and place the podcast subscription in the users collection. The process will work best if the Zune user already has the new Zune Marketplace software loaded on a Windows PC, but if not already installed, will then ask user to download the software.

The podcast feed does not need to be in the Zune Marketplace for the link to work. Here are the instructions for setting up Zune’s new “1-Click Podcast Subscription” link URL for your podcast: ->

Zune: software update Sep. 15 & Zune HD is only Zune left

Engadget spotted that Microsoft has confirmed the new Zune software update will be made available on September 15. In a newsletter to subscribers, Microsoft notes "soon you'll be able to experience the all-new Zune software packed with exciting new features. Watch for the update on September 15 so you'll be ready to enjoy the full Zune experience." It's expected that the latest update will include more HD video options and an apps marketplace. Zune HD applications were confirmed by a Microsoft official in late August. Zune 2: An intimate conversation with the Zune team

Cesar Menendez, a Microsoft employee working on Zune, had some interesting things to note when Channel 10 interviewed him. It turns out that the newly released Zune 4 ($150), Zune 8 ($200) and Zune 80 ($250), the names of which you may have guessed correspond to the device capacity in GB, aren't the only part of the Zune experience that received a revamp. The Zune software and the Zune Marketplace have been recoded from the ground up. Cesar also throws out a statistic: the Zune Marketplace now has 3 million tracks available, 1 million of which are DRM-free.

Zune 2.5 Now Available

Microsoft has quite a bit in store for the Zune with its new Zune version 2.5 software update. The greatest additions are the new Zune Card integration and TV show downloads on Zune Marketplace. Those features as well as much-requested features like gapless playback, improved syncing controls, meta data editing, auto playlists and other tweaks have also been included.

On the marketing front, Microsoft is really pushing the Zune Pass going forward, and will be launching a new TV commercial to help plug it. Subscribers will particularly benefit from the new Zune Card sharing, which lets you automatically score copies of your pals' favorite songs, artists and recent plays -- non-subscribers can view that Zune Card info, but will have to buy the tracks if they want to have a listen. You can either download the software directly, or you’ll be prompted for an update the next time your open your Zune software.

New Zune Marketplace will offer web link to podcasts

The forthcoming Zune Marketplace software update will include a feature dubbed "1-Click Podcast Subscription" that will allow podcast creators to place a small graphic on their Web sites that can be clicked to automatically generate a podcast subscription. Clicking the button will launch the new Zune Marketplace software and place the podcast subscription in a user's collection.

A posting to Microsoft's Zune Insider site says that the process will work best if the Zune user already has the new Zune Marketplace software loaded on a Windows PC. If the new version is not yet installed, users will be prompted to download it. The podcast feed does not need to be in the Zune Marketplace for the link to work.

Microsoft readies Zune Software Update 2.3

Not to be confused with the firmware updated released last month, this update will bring the Zune software to the same version number: 2.3. The update, which will not be a major one (judging by the fact that the previous version is 2.1), will be released sometime today; it all depends on how quickly the software giant can get the file ready on all of its servers. So, essentially, you can't expect new features but there will be the usual bug fixes as well as performance improvements in terms of set-up, sync and general reliability. I’d like to reiterate again for those who will be happily clicking the download link below without reading past the title: it’s not up yet, but should be up soon. File is up!

Workaround to enable Zune Marketplace in Zune software v2.5 for non-US users

Long Zheng: The Microsoft Zune team has officially become "region control" extremists. First, they locked down the Zune Originals site with geographic IP blocking so you couldn't even fantasize about the cool and stylish new Zunes if you didn't live in the United States. If that wasn’t enough, they're also blocking enthusiasts from populating their Zune Card with play lists. Now comes a third restriction which hides the Zune Marketplace in the latest version (2.5) of the Zune software.

Microsoft confirms Zune coming to Windows Mobile devices

It has been long rumoured that Microsoft would introduce Zune software onto the Windows Mobile operating system.

In an interview with CIO magazine Steve Ballmer confirms that Microsoft is looking to port the software to Windows Mobile devices.

When questioned why Microsoft developed the zune, Ballmer replied:

"At the end of the day, one of the big trends is that all content is going digital. And if we don’t have the software and services that are useful, helpful and valuable for the consumption of music and video, we are sort of not really a player.

Now, we built the Zune hardware with the Zune software - and what you’ll see more and more over time is that the Zune software will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc."

This is the strongest indication that Microsoft will be porting the software. We're not sure when exactly but you can bet that Windows Mobile 7 will have it included.
