DeepZoom & PhotoZoom From Microsoft.

Microsoft announced new features in Silverlight 2. One of the most exciting new features is DeepZoom. This capability allows users to explore collections of super high resolution imagery, from a 2 or 3 megapixel shot from a digital camera to gigapixel scans of museum pieces, all without waiting for huge file downloads. Deep Zoom is based on the same Seadragon technology that you have seen in our demos and in the Photosynth preview.

PhotoZoom is an experimental project developed by a small group of Microsoft developers, and it is definitely not an official, supported Microsoft product. PhotoZoom is a web site where anyone can upload their photos and turn them into zoom-able, pan-able albums, using the Deep Zoom technology in Silverlight 2 Beta 1.

Internet Explorer 8 and Adaptive Zoom

Saloni Mira Rai, a program manager on the Internet Explorer 8 Layout team provides a walk through of the changes in Zoom for Internet Explorer 8:

Zoom lets you enlarge or reduce the view of a web page to improve readability. The feature is particularly useful on really large and really small displays, allowing for scaling of content while maintaining the intended layout of the page. The second iteration of the zoom feature (first shipped in Internet Explorer 7) focuses on improving the existing experience by providing a higher quality, more predictable, and persistent zooming experience.

Firefox 3 gets full-page zoom

The much-anticipated page zoom feature has finally landed in Firefox 3 nightly builds. Firefox 3 will now be able to zoom the entire page, including images as well as text, just like Opera and IE 7.

The page zoom feature request was originally filed in Bugzilla in 1999, but implementation was delayed because it wasn't considered practical in Gecko 1.8, the current version of Firefox's HTML rendering engine. Scheduled for inclusion in Firefox 3, the new version of the rendering engineGecko 1.9leverages the open source Cairo vector graphics rendering framework and includes a number of extremely significant improvements to layout and rendering. The page zoom feature was implemented as part of the Gecko overhaul and will now be included in Firefox 3.

Although the page zoom feature is fully implemented, the user interface doesn't expose the page zoom functionality to the end user yet. Until menu items, toolbar buttons, or keyboard shortcuts are added to facilitate access to the page zoom feature, most users probably won't be able to make much use of the new feature.

Windows Live PhotoZoom Alpha: Silverlight powers new Microsoft Live Labs project

There's a new project brewing in Microsoft Live Labs, Windows Live PhotoZoom. This alpha project from Ray Ozzie's Concept Development Team is Silverlight based and allows seamless zoom controls on consumer photos in a web based application. PhotoZoom also makes use of the Photosynth / Seadragon technology developed by Live Labs, which most recently has been seen in the http://www.on10.net/Blogs/larr y/bbc-launches-six-photosynth- collections/>Photosynth collections released by the BBC. While you may not yet be able to recreate the BBC's work, PhotoZoom is another step towards this.

According to Matt Augustine of the PhotoZoom team, "PhotoZoom is an experimental site that brings the zooming capabilities first shown during the Silverlight demos in the Mix07 keynote to consumer photography." Note that the currently available alpha/beta builds of Silverlight do not feature the zooming feature that is required for PhotoZoom, so the timeline for this Live Labs project being released is dependent on when this Silverlight update becomes public...
