2.11.2007Olympic trojan beats Microsoft to Excel patch
Microsoft's decision to hold back an Excel patch from last month's Patch Tuesday may have left millions exposed as attackers target the un-patched
flaw in Excel.
The US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has issued a warning that Excel file attachments are being used
to spread a trojan which allows a hacker to gain user rights to a PC.
The trojan is packed inside an Excel attachment and
exploits a flaw
discovered in multiple versions of Excel in January.

19.08.2008Microsoft Fixes Flawed Excel Patches
Microsoft was forced to
re-issue a set of patches for
multiple flaws in Microsoft
Excel in order to solve a
problem in Chinese, Japanese,
and Korean editions. The
original MS07-002 was a
security bulletin released
January 9 that addressed five
Excel bugs, all considered
"critical" for Excel 2000
and "important" for later
editions. Version 2.0 of the
bulletin has been posted to
the Microsoft support site.
Only users of Excel 2000 need
to install the new patches if
they plan to open Excel files
created with any Chinese,
Japanese, or Korean version of
the spreadsheet.
" While the original
version of this security
update for Excel 2000 does
protect against all
vulnerabilities discussed in
the bulletin, it does not
correctly process the phonetic
information that is embedded
in files that are created by
using Excel in the Korean,
Chinese, or Japanese
executable mode ," said a
Microsoft spokesperson
Wednesday.

22.06.2009Microsoft Fixes Excel Calculation Bug
Microsoft says it has fixed a much publicized Excel 2007 bug which caused the spreadsheet program to display erroneous calculation results. The Excel
team explained the issue this way: of the countless different floating point numbers Excel 2007 can store, there are six floating numbers using binary
representation that cause the problem. Apparently for calculations that amount to around 65,535, Excel 2007 would return a value of 100,000 instead of
65,535. Thus, for instance, if you multiplied 850 by 77.1, the program would display 100,000 instead of 65,535, but if you consequently multiplied the
result by 2, you would get 131,070, the correct answer. The issue, according to the Excel staff, was introduced when Microsofts development team made
changes to the Excel calculation logic in Office 2007.
However, all of that is now in the past: in an Oct. 9 posting on the Excel section
of MSDN
the Excel Team served notice that, " as of today, fixes for this issue in Excel 2007 and Excel Services
2007 are available for download. " The team has also added the fix to Microsoft Update, " so that it will get automatically pushed to
users running Excel 2007 or Excel Services 2008. " The fix will be included in the first service pack of Office 2007 when its released, though
that date has not yet been finalized.

Excel Calculation Issue Update (Fix Available)
Two weeks ago, we posted about an issue involving the calculation of numbers around 65,535 and 65,536. As of today, fixes for this issue in Excel
2007 and Excel Services 2007 are available for download from the following locations:
- Excel 2007
- 64-bit Excel Services 2007
- 32-bit Excel Services 2007
KB Articles have been posted as well:
- Excel 2007
- Excel Services 2007
We are in the process of
adding this fix to Microsoft Update so that it will get automatically pushed to users running Excel 2007 or Excel Services 2007. Additionally, the
fix will also be contained in the first service pack of Office 2007 when it is released (the release date for SP1 of Office 2007 has not been
finalized).
Thank you for your patience,
The Excel Team

Expand your file-protection options via Microsoft Office 2007's Trust Center
One of the most notable additions to Microsoft's 2007 Office System was the Trust Center, which centralizes the security options in Word, Excel,
Outlook, PowerPoint, and the other applications in the suite. Of course, this being Office, it figures that many of the most important security
features--including the new Document Inspector--also reside elsewhere.
To open the Trust Center in the 2007 versions of Word,
Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, click the Office button, select the Options button at the bottom-right of the window, choose Trust Center in the left
pane, and click the Trust Center Settings button in the right pane. In Outlook 2007 and Publisher 2007, click Tools > Trust Center.

Microsoft Acknowledges Floating Point Bug in Excel 2007
It's the type of bug that, when discovered twenty years ago on the world's leading spreadsheets of the time, generated controversy and sent
thousands back to their software stores for refunds: Excel 2007 has a bug with the display of floating-point values, a Microsoft developer confirmed on his team's blog yesterday.
BetaNews confirmed the bug's existence, which leads to some values in floating-point multiplication to be "rounded" to incorrect values.
The problem appears to be with certain kinds of pairs of values whose product is either 216 (65,536) or 216 - 1
(65,535). When one or both factors has floating-point precision but is only slightly fractional - meaning, it has perhaps one or two decimal places
but is otherwise not "imaginary," to borrow its mathematical meaning - Excel renders the product as 100,000 instead.

If you are using Office 2007 in an environment where everybody else is using Office 2003, you might have already set Excel or Word to always save to 2003 format, but
what about when you create new documents using the New menu? The only choices are now to create files in 2007 format, but we can add the old ones
back.
