Microsoft silent on true Vista figures

Microsoft is keeping mum on sales figures of Windows Vista, despite its chief operating officer claiming that 60 million units have been sold.

The software maker, however, declined to confirm the figure that Kevin Turner told financial analysts last week, throwing into confusion how successful its latest operating system has been.

But, approached by ZDNet Australia's sister site ZDNet.co.uk for confirmation, Microsoft could only confirm that it had sold 40 million, saying the last figure is two months old.

If Microsoft's figures are to be believed, this means Vista sales are flat. Turner's figures mean that 20 million copies of Vista have been sold, on a wholesale basis at least, over the last two months, with 40 million sold in the first four months since the consumer launch in January...

Microsoft Says Vista Sales Strong

Kevin Kutz, a director in Microsoft's Windows client group, has announced that over 20 million copies of Windows Vista were sold globally in the first month of sales since the consumer release (February 2007) compared to more than the 17 million copies of Windows XP that were sold in the first two months following its release in October 2001. " These sales figures reflect global sales from retail, PC manufacturers and the Express Upgrade program, and indicate that we are on track to more than double the initial pace of sales for Windows XP, and for Vista to become the fastest adopted version of Windows ever ," Kutz said. These sales figures were compiled by Microsoft based on sales reports from its retail and PC manufacturers over the period, as well as from the Express Upgrade program.

Kutz declined to break down the numbers by region or per each of the six Vista editions but did note that sales were strong across the globe. Microsoft is expected to disclose more regional and version sales details when it releases its quarterly financial figures in late April. Kutz did acknowledge that, historically, there tended to be a rush of sales immediately after a product's launch, which varied according to the time of year. " It's worth noting that with XP, which we launched in late October in advance of the holiday season, those figures captured some of the holiday rush ," he said. With regard to sales of Office 2007 over the same period, Kutz said Microsoft was not disclosing any sales figures, adding that " the folk at Office are pleased right now with the initial response ."

Billboard: iTunes prices up, sales down

I could have told you this, though I am a little surprised that we've seen the results so fast. Despite iTunes having put the new tiered pricing into effect just last week, Billboard is reporting that they've already seen sales drop on the higher-priced tunes. The iTunes Top 100 chart has 40 different songs with a new price of $1.29, and one day after the changes, those songs dropped an average of 5.3 places on the chart, while cheaper songs moved up on average. And on the second day of the price change, ten of the tracks that saw their prices rise within 24 hours dropped a huge 12.4 chart positions on average.

Of course, we're talking only a matter of days here, and there are all kinds of things that could have affected this average drop, lots of the tracks that became expensive were from a Rascal Flatts album, and it could be just that the album has lost popularity bringing the average down. Don't forget that even though these sales figures may be dropping, they haven't dropped nearly enough to show a loss of revenue (though fewer songs may be selling, they're still making more money).

But for those convinced that higher prices mean lower sales numbers, these first few days of figures will seem to connect all of the right dots. We'll have to wait and see if the long-term effects match up to the figures Billboard has seen so far.

Is Microsoft Office 2007 outselling Windows Vista?

Mary Jo Foley is speculating that sales of Office 2007 may be outpacing sales of Windows Vista. According to Microsoft's July Vista sales pronouncement, the software giant had sold 60 million copies of Vista. Although the Office team hasn't been talking sales figures since the simultaneous launch of the two products, according to information shared during a recent briefing with certain members of the French tech press, Microsoft allegedly has sold 70 million copies of Office 2007 to date. A Microsoft spokesperson noted: " It's not our policy to confirm the license figures ." Assuming the numbers are correct, and Microsoft hasn't denied them, Office 2007 may be outselling Vista or at the very least, keeping up.

Are there any Neowinians out there who skipped Vista but couldn't resist an upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Office?

RAM use rises thanks to Vista, falling prices

Microsoft's memory-hungry Vista operating system -- along with falling dynamic RAM prices -- is boosting semiconductor sales.

The San Jose-based trade association, citing figures from one of its members, Micron Technology Inc., said the average amount of DRAM installed in PCs has increase from 772MB last year to 1,180MB this year. ..

Have we entered the era of the netbook? For those not paying attention a netbook is an ultraportable notebook. It's also an ultra-affordable notebook most often priced below $500. PlayStation 3 sales boom (is over)

It was almost too good to be true for Sony, wasn't it? After three weeks of improved sales for its PS3 console, the status quo seems to have been restored once again. PS3 sales last week plummeted back to where they were before the price cuts and the launch of the 40GB model.

Sales of the Xbox 360, in contrast, have held pretty steady in the last few months. An average of around 11,000 of them are sold each week (according to figures from VGChartz), while PS3 sales have been fluctuating violently. And now the PS3 has nestled back into its former position in the sub-10,000 group.
