Slideshow in the Windows Live Photo Gallery

We didnt do much to the Slideshow feature in the Windows Live Photo Gallery, but there have been several questions coming in about this feature, so we thought that it was worth a brief rundown of whats changed.

In a nutshell, heres how the slideshow feature works in this release:We blogged about the Vista Slideshow experience previously. Most of this still applies (with the exception of the above notes). One exception is that although the rich themes were only available on certain Vista SKUs, all themes are available in all Vista SKUs (again, depending on your graphics hardware).

Windows XP SP3 Released To Small Group (Updated)

In addition to the previously reported Windows Vista SP1 drop to testers, Microsoft has just recently (few days ago) dropped a copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3 in the lap of the same small group of testers.

Coming in at less than 350MB, the service pack includes fixes for over 900 reported problems, some of which have already been resolved with post-Service Pack 2 hotfixes.

For the hardcore build string collectors, this build is tagged 5.1.2600.3180 (xpsp.070718-2058) (Thanks again C).

Given the close proximity of the two betas we guestimate both 'packs will be released simultaneously. We'll let you know if we hear of a more solid release date.

Microsoft: XP SP3 won't arrive until '07

Aiming to keep its focus on Windows Vista, Microsoft is now targeting 2007 for its next Windows XP service pack update.

In a posting to its life cycle Web site, Microsoft set a preliminary date of the second half of next year for the release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 for both home and professional editions. That puts its debut well past the arrival of Vista, which is slated for the second half of this year and later than both outsiders and some insiders had originally predicted.

"We will be releasing another service pack for XP over the course of the product life cycle, and we are tentatively targeting the second half of 2007 for release," a Microsoft representative said in an e-mail to CNET News.com. "However, right now our priority is Windows Vista--we'll have more information to share about the next service pack for XP after Windows Vista ships." ..

Performance Results Mixed with Vista Service Pack 1

Microsoft's newly released Service Pack 1 may solve some of the performance glitches that have annoyed Windows Vista users and discouraged others from adopting the OS, but it doesn't appear from our initial tests to be a panacea.

In our first tests of the service pack, file copying, one of the main performance-related complaints from Vista users, was significantly faster. But other tests showed little improvement and in two tests, our experience was actually a little better without the service pack installed than with it.

Google preparing to launch theme gallery for Chrome

Last week, information was spread that Google planned to implement proper theme support within their Chrome browser. Just recently, people have discovered, in the developer builds of the browser, that the company has built in the theme support already. It was unclear how they'd plan to display said themes, though many suspected the obvious choice of an online gallery; now, however, TechCrunch is reporting that this has been all but confirmed, with several themes already having been discovered. TechCrunch states that the themes will be available at this link, which has obviously yet to go online, but you can already preview it if you have the very latest build of the Chrome browser.

Leaked Vista Hotfixes to be broadly available in the near future

Microsoft Corp. confirmed today that the Vista hot-fix packs that have leaked to the Web will be issued to all users.

"We plan to make these two updates broadly available via Windows Update in the near future," a company spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

The two updates, dubbed "Vista Performance and Reliability Pack" and "Vista Compatibility and Reliability Pack," were posted over the weekend to a third-party download site after being leaked from a group of Windows Server 2008 testers. The list of fixes -- which include performance improvements to Vista's sleep mode and speed increases in copying or moving large directories -- led some users yesterday to speculate that the updates were the forerunner of Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), a major upgrade that many businesses want to see before they widely deploy the new operating system. ..

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta Whitepaper

When developing Windows Vista, Microsoft set out to provide higher levels of productivity, mobility, and security, with lower costs. After more than six months of broad availability and usage, it's evident that these investments are improving the Windows computing experience. For example, in the first six months of use, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than Windows XP (Windows Vista had only 12 issues, and Windows XP had 36). According to the Windows Vista 6-Month Vulnerability Report by Jeffery R. Jones, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than all the popular operating systems he studied.

Although most companies are cautious when deploying a new operating system, many have already started testing and evaluating Windows Vista for deployment, and some have already deployed Windows Vista into their production environments and begun seeing the business benefits Windows Vista can provide.

Microsoft's efforts to provide the best Windows experience ever in Windows Vista did not end with its launch. This white paper describes the ways Microsoft strives to continuously improve Windows Vista. It then introduces Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and describes how the service pack will fit into the ongoing improvement process.

Vista Service Pack 1: It lives

With all the Microsoft-created confusion out there around when — and even whether — the company plans to deliver the first service pack (SP) for Windows Vista, it’s nice to see some concrete proof that Vista SP1 does exist.

The http://www.winfuture.de/news,3 1801.html>WinFuture.de folks managed to grab a quick snapshot of a machine running a build of Vista SP1 during one of the Rally talks at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles this week. Plain as day, it says: “Windows Build 6001 Service Pack 1, v113.”)

I also saw a PowerPoint slide mentioning the existence of Vista SP1 during a WinHEC chalk talk on “The Future of Input” at this week’s show. (The context: A shim for the kernel-mode driver foundation version of the digitizer driver will ship as a Windows Driver Kit sample in Vista SP1. That was it.)..

Those of you that did not get a chance to update early to Service Pack 1 will be happy to know that you were saved the trouble of having programs stop working for you.

Official theme support now integrated in Google Chrome 3.0

The latest developer build of Chrome now includes an official option to install themes into Google Chrome. It was reported earlier this week by Neowin that Google is preparing to launch a theme gallery. It looks like this has happened with the release of build 3.0.195.6. The option is offered under "Personal Stuff" and has the option to "Get Themes". Pressing the button redirects you to a webpage, that shows a whole array of new themes for Chrome. Applying the theme is as simple as pressing the "Apply Theme" button below the chosen theme, and a ".crx" file is downloaded. A restart of Chrome is not required to apply the theme.
