Poker hotshots narrowly defeat bluffing computer

After two thousand hands and countless "flops", "rivers", and "turns", two elite poker players have narrowly defeated a formidable computer opponent. The result means that, while chess world champions have fallen to computers, humans still hold sway in poker, a game where psychology plays a huge role.

Phil "The Unabomber" Laak and Ali Eslami took on Polaris, software developed by researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada, in a set-up designed to reduce the role that luck normally plays in a game of poker.

The pair played Polaris simultaneously in different rooms, with computer and human playing opposite hands in each game. In other words, if Laak was dealt a full house, Polaris would have exactly the same hand, at the same time, in its game against Eslami...

Windows Server 2008 Developer Training Kit (Beta 3)

The Windows Server 2008 Developer Training Kit includes a set of hands-on-labs and presentations for technologies such as IIS7, Management, WCF, WF, Windows CardSpace, Windows PowerShell, Virtualization and the Transactional File System (TxF). The content was originally created by Microsoft's Developer & Platform Evangelism group as part of the Windows Server 2008 Touchdown training activities.

The seven hands-on labs included in this kit are based on the DinnerNow sample application. The entire source code for the DinnerNow sample application can be downloaded from codeplex (see the related resources), however, this sample is not required for using the developer training kit.

Although this kit is intended to show developers how to build applications that target Windows Server 2008 technologies, the kit can be installed on Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. The hands-on labs and most of the technologies covered in this training kit also apply to Windows Vista.

Securing Microsoft: The next generation of security threats

Microsoft security engineer Robert Hensing had a question for the hundreds of his company's developers seated before him: can a person's PC become infected with a rootkit simply by opening a PowerPoint file?

In the packed conference center, a smattering of developers raise their hands. Nearby, in an adjacent room, where hackers invited to speak at Microsoft's Blue Hat conference watch the presentations on TV, an entire table of hands go up.

"That's one thing I want you to take away from this," Hensing tells the Microsoft developers. "Applications are dangerous."
