Inno3D iChiLL 9800 GTX Accelero Xtreme review

Early last month Nvidia released the GeForce 9800 GTX which today stands as the fastest single GPU graphics card money can buy. However, after almost sixty days of its release and with an eventual appearance of next-generation cards from both ATI and Nvidia, few manufacturers seem to be making pronounced efforts on modifying or improving the original Nvidia reference design.

That is until we received the iChiLL 9800 GTX Accelero Xtreme from Inno3D, which features a mammoth heatsink that is cooled by no less than three fans.

Those of you more educated in the arts of PC cooling have probably recognized by the name of this product that Inno has employed the new Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 9800 cooler. This cooler alone retails for $55 which is only good news for prospective buyers of this graphics card since it's retailing on par with other standard-equipped products at just $315.

D-Link Announces HD Media Streaming to TV

D-Link announced the Xtreme N Media Bridge, capable of wirelessly streaming high-definition content from a PC to an HD-capable TV, today at the WinHEC conference in LA. The company plans to release the Xtreme N Media Bridge, model number DAP1555, in Q3 this year for under $200. The setup uses a pair of devices that each looks much like a regular wireless router, with two antennas.

One device connects to your home router with an Ethernet cable, and the other to a TV-attached, Ethernet-capable device such as a game console. Microsoft demonstrated using the Media Bridge to play a movie in today's conference keynote using an Xbox 360, but D-Link says it will work with other devices. The devices use 802.11n, and offer Microsoft's new Rally feature for easy network discovery and setup in Vista.

PCI Express X-Fi quietly slips into the market

After months of rumors and speculation, Creative's Sound Blaster X-Fi has finally acquired a PCI Express connector. However, instead of adding support for the new interface to a high-end card, Creative has picked a low-end part for the job and released it into the U.S. market without much noise (pardon the pun). The arrival of a press release in Creative's home country of Singapore has drawn our attention to the card, which is already being sold at Newegg.

It's not hard to see why Creative isn't hyping up the product. TOSLINK optical input and output ports are the PCIe model's only apparent advantage over its PCI counterpart, and they seem to have been added to the PCIe part at the expense of lower analog sound quality. Compared to the PCI X-Fi Xtreme Audio, the PCIe X-Fi Xtreme Audio otherwise has the same 24-bit/96KHz sample rate for playback and recording but a lower signal to noise ratio (104dB instead of over 108dB ), greater harmonic distortion (0.007% instead of 0.006%), and a higher official price tag ($69.99 instead of $59.99).

Vendors Kick Wireless N Up a Notch

At CES today, two Vendors (D-Link and Trendnet) were showing off their latest Wireless N devices.

When compared to the older G format (54Mbps) and the older version of the N format (300Mbps) these are incredibly fast devices.

Running dual-band (at 2.4 and 5GHz), they are capable of handling up to three streams of data in each antenna, compared to the previous draft N devices' two streams.

The two new device models in question when making these statements are D-Link's "Xtreme N 450" and Trendnet's "Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-773GR".

With estimated costs of under $200, these devices are expected to be made public in Q2 of 2009.

Creative Technology Shows Off Audio Card for PCI Express

Creative Technology, a maker of digital media players and various multimedia devices, showcased its first audio card for modern PCI Express bus at the Consumer Electronics Show 2007. Specs of the product are unclear, but it is remarkable that Creative is finally paying attention to the bus that has been afloat for nearly three years now.

Images of Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio for PCI Express x1 bus, which have been published by several web-sites, reveal that the card carries one relatively small X-Fi chip, an unknown audio codec, the lack of onboard memory buffer, relatively small number of capacitors, the absence of MIDI port and the presence of S/P DIF connectors and five analog connectors to attack 7.1-channel audio system.

Notebook-bound Core 2 Extreme tested

The folks at Belgium-based hardware site Matbe have put together a short review of an upcoming high-end Intel processor called the Core 2 Extreme X7800. This chip is unique because it's the first Core 2 Extreme model aimed at notebooks.

It's based on the same Merom core as mobile Core 2 Duo T7000-series processors, and it runs at 2.6GHz200MHz faster than the top-of-the-line Core 2 Duo T7700. This higher clock speed gives the X7800 a power envelope that's 9W higher than that of the T7700, although both chips have the same 800MHz front-side bus and 4MB of shared L2 cache.

Beyond the extra MHz, one of the most interesting aspects of the Core 2 Extreme X7800 is its unlocked multiplier. Matbe says the BIOS on their prototype X7800-powered notebook allows users to choose between speeds of 2.6GHz, 2.8GHz, and 3GHz. Battery life at 3GHz probably isn't great, but Matbe found that the machine lasted anywhere between 46 minutes and 142 minutes at 2.6GHz depending on the load level and power profile. 142 minutes translates to nearly two and a half hours, which doesn't seem too bad for a high-end notebook.

WinHEC 2007: Day 2

On my second day at WinHEC I really wanted to make it a point to stop by the Expo Hall and take a closer look at all the really cool hardware. So I spent about two hours walking around the Expo Hall and talking with folks until the Expo Hall closed. Microsoft's Pavilion had numerous kiosks set up with product experts at those kiosks to answer any questions. At the Microsoft Pavilion, I caught up with one of Nick's colleagues Matt Krueger who was helping show off some Mobile PC's that take advantage of Windows Vista and it's technologies.

After talking with Matt, I spotted the HD Media Bridge kiosk and Network Attached Storage kiosk right next to it. I got a closer look at the D-Link Xtreme N Duo MediaBridge units. Right next to the Media Bridge units was the Maxtor (now under Seagate) network storage device that are use Windows Rally. You can check out Maxtor's selection of network storage devices here.

New Wi-Fi Draft Ensures Compatibility

More than a year after the first products based on an initial draft of the superfast 802.11n Wi-Fi standard arrived, a second draft--reinforced by Wi-Fi Alliance certification--appears to have solved the interoperability and stability problems we saw in the initial crop. But our informal tests of the first certified products also suggest that prices and performance vary widely as a result of issues that are unrelated to the standard.

We tested Belkin's $90 N (F5D8233-4), Buffalo's $99 AirStation Nfiniti (WZR2-G300N), D-Link's $180 Xtreme N Gigabit (DIR-655), and Netgear's $130 RangeMax Next (WNR834Bv2) first with their own matching PC Cards and then again with PC Cards made by each of the other three vendors. Connection utilities showed that in our tests at a midrange distance of 20 feet, all of them connected at theoretical single-channel draft-n speeds of up to 130 megabits per second (mbps). The Buffalo and the D-Link proved the fastest (see our chart on the next page), and the Buffalo's sub-$100 price makes it a good deal.
