28.12.2006Even with Vista SP1, Hackers Still Crack WGA
The fact that Microsoft has relaxed its antipiracy mechanism built into Windows Vista concomitantly with the release of Service Pack 1 failed
to stop hackers from providing a crack for the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Various reports point out that Genuine
Advantage Validation and Notifications versions 1.7.69.1 (1.7.0069.1) and 1.7.69.2 released in March 2008, following the March 18 availability of
Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, have been cracked.
The workaround is designed to be integrated
with pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista in order to render useless the WGA Validation mechanism. According to the reports, applying the
WGA crack will permit users of counterfeit versions of Windows to access and download items from Windows Update, Microsoft Download Center and
Microsoft Update. The pirated operating systems with the cracked WGA will pass all validations on Microsoft's websites and offer anything from
updates to applications that are restricted to users of genuine operating systems only.

XP Pro to receive WGA similar to Vista SP1
Remember how everyone was excited about how Vista SP1 received a WGA update to not block you from your computer?
Well, the same is coming
to Windows XP. (Professional only, though. Who would want to pirate XP Home?)
From the WGA Blog:
With this update to
WGA Notifications in Windows XP, we've implemented a couple of related features that draw on the notifications experience we designed for Windows
Vista SP1. After installing this version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their
next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously (see below).
The desktop
background can be reset to anything else in the usual ways, but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue
to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine.
Also, the user will see the addition of what we call the "persistent desktop
notification." This notification is similar to a watermark but works a bit differently. The image (see below) appears over the system tray and is
non-interactive in the sense that you can't click on it or do anything to it.
As with previous releases, if a copy of Windows fails
validation, notifications will appear above the system tray regularly - and we will continue to have the pre-logon message, the logon interrupt
message and the messages that appear from the system tray.

Microsoft Kills Windows Validation and Office Validation Anti-Piracy Efforts
Microsoft's anti-piracy
efforts will undertake a major
overhauling. The Redmond
company plans to take down
both the Windows Validation
Assistant and the Office
Validation Assistant.
However, Microsoft is
going to fill in the empty
spaces left by the
discontinuing of WVA and OVA
with Windows Comparison Guide
(WCG) and the Office
Comparison Guide (OCG).
Additionally there is also the
old trust Windows Genuine
Advantage and Office Genuine
Advantage that will survive
the anti-piracy cancelled
services. Still, this is not
the end of the upgrades in
stored for the Microsoft
anti-piracy programs. Feature
updates and additions are also
planned to be introduced.
"We're finally
taking down both the Windows
Validation Assistant and the
Office Validation Assistant.
The WVA was a prototype for
WGA; it was the first tool
launched that offered a
web-based validation that
could help find evidence that
a copy wasn't genuine that
otherwise might be hard for
the average person to find
(such as bad or leaked product
keys, etc.) The good news is
that we're replacing the WVA
with the Windows Comparison
Guide (WCG) and the Office
Comparison Guide (OCG). These
guides offer much of the same
functionality as the WVA did
by walking users through a
quiz that helps them match the
anti-piracy features of the
products they have, but
without the web-based
validation. For that we're
pointing people directly to WGA,"
revealed Alex
Kochis, a senior licensing
manager on the WGA team. ..

Disappearance Of Vista Language Packs
On Friday 24 August, an internal process change inadvertently caused the current versions of the Windows Vista language packs offered as Ultimate
Extras to be withdrawn earlier than normal in preparation for release of new updates to these language packs. This situation has since been resolved
and the language packs are once more available to Windows Vista Ultimate customers via Windows Update. The content of the language packs themselves
has not been changed.
Finer points:
▪ Validation of these language packs is handled in the
same manner as security updates.
▪ If they are accessed directly from Microsoft.com Download Center, then validation is required to
download.
▪ If they are accessed via the Windows Update control panel, then validation is required before updates will appear.
▪ If Automatic Update (AU) is enabled in Windows Update, then all of these updates will install automatically. There is no validation on AU.

America to crack down on blogger payola
US regulators are to crack down on bloggers who fail to disclose money or gifts received from companies when reviewing their products. In the new
policy from the Federal Trade Commission, offending bloggers could eventually face fines of up to $11,000 (£6,900) per violation, according
to the BBC. So-called payola schemes have increased in recent years, with marketers realising the potential of encouraging bloggers and forum
contributors to produce reviews or testimonials on their products in exchange for money of freebies. Although the guidelines released by the FTC are
not binding by law, they are interpretations of the law that hope to help advertisers comply with regulations, such as those on disclosing
endorsements.

Addressing WGA validation issues
From what I personally noticed while reading about the WGA issue around the web, it was much more than just a "very few customers were affected".
Perhaps Microsoft should rethink their validation strategy after this near-disaster?
Earlier today (25 August) we began
receiving reports of Windows Vista customers running genuine systems but experiencing failures when attempting a Windows Genuine Advantage validation.
This situation has since been resolved and validations are now being processed successfully.
We've since learned that very
few customers were affected. Sr. Product Manager Alex Kochis and a team of engineers have been working on the issue and has blogged about it to keep customers
up-to-date. Customers who received an incorrect validation response can fix their system by revalidating. I'd encourage anyone who received a validation failure since Friday evening to visit this site now; after
successfully revalidating, any affected system should be rebooted to ensure that genuine-only features are restored.
Alex will be
updating his blog with information as more information comes to light.

Windows XP a hot item on Amazon
Although Microsoft officially stopped selling Windows XP as of June 30, retailers can keep selling it as long as they have copies.
Perhaps as a
result of its potentially impending scarcity, XP is near the top of Amazon.com's software list, with the full
version of XP Home at No. 15 and the full version of XP Pro at No. 21.
The highest ranked Vista edition doesn't crack the top
25, although it does come on nearly all new PCs these days so most people don't need a boxed copy.

WGA Removed From IE7 Update
From the Internet Explorer Team Blog:
Almost a year ago, we released Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP. Since then, IE7 is well on its way to becoming the most used browser in the world,
and we've seen lots of evidence that IE7 makes it safer and easier to accomplish everyday tasks online. For example, the built-in Phishing Filter has
protected consumers from known phishing web sites an average of 900,000 times per week. IE7 is the first - and still the only - browser with native
support for Extended Validation SSL Certificates that help prevent online fraud. (Of course, tabbed browsing, QuickTabs, shrink-to-fit printing, an
easily customizable search box, CSS improvements, and some add-ons are all good things too.)
Because Microsoft takes its commitment to help
protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, we're updating the IE7 installation experience to make it available as broadly as possible to all
Windows users. With today's "Installation and Availability Update," Internet Explorer 7 installation will no longer require Windows Genuine
Advantage validation and will be available to all Windows XP users. If you are not already running IE7, you can get it now from the Internet Explorer home page on Microsoft.com, get a customized version from a third-party
site, or, if you haven't already received it via Automatic Updates, this version will be delivered to you as we described previously. If you are
already running IE7, you will not be offered IE7 again by Automatic Updates.
Additionally, we've made minor changes to IE7 for Windows XP based on customer feedback ->

Potential pirates, not Vista, get cracked
35 days before Windows XP was
officially released, a pirated
key, called the "devils0wn",
began circulating around the
web which allowed users to run
a pirated copy of the
operating system. Since then,
the key has been used
thousands of times and is now
a part of Windows XP history.
Trying to follow in
devils0wn's footsteps, a new
crack for Windows Vista is
rumored to have become
available. Called "Windows
Vista All Versions Activation
21.11.06", the key reportedly
unlocks any version of Vista.
Sounds great for pirates,
right? Maybe it is, depending
where you stand on software
piracy.
Those who
download "Windows Vista All
Versions Activation 21.11.06"
will end up with anything but
a cracked version of Vista.
The file is neither a crack
nor key generator, but it is a
trojan installer that installs
the malware known as
"Trojan-PSW.Win32.LdPinch.aze
." According to APC Magazine,
most antivirus scanners will
recognize the trojan, but
NOD32 and Norton's latest
signatures do not.
While most of us dread the
thought of a new piece of
malware in the wild, it's
hard not to like the motive
behind this trojan.
Nevertheless, any propagation
of malware is a bad thing so
I'm happy to hear that most
scanners can stop this one.

Internet Explorer 7 update: Now WGA-free
Microsoft has issued an updated Internet Explorer (IE) 7 release that no longer requires Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation in order to
download.
Program Manager Steve Reynolds announced the news on October 4 on Microsoft’s IE Team blog:WGA is the anti-piracy mechanism Microsoft uses to check
whether users are running “genuine” Windows before allowing them to download certain product updates, fixes, white papers and other
related information.

Update on WGA Validation Issues
We're continuing to investigate what happened but here's a quick update to yesterday's post. The issue with processing validations began Friday
afternoon at about 3:30 PM Pacific time and through a combination of posts to our forum and customer support the issue was discovered by evening.
By about 11:15 AM Pacific on Saturday morning the issue affecting the validation service had been analyzed and resolved such that
validations were again being processed properly. Our data shows that fewer than 12,000 systems were affected worldwide and that many of those have
already revalidated and are fixed. This is encouraging news but we want to emphasize that one bad customer experience is one too many and that we're
committed to learning from this experience and working to prevent this type of event from occurring again.
We're also looking
into the reports of comments made about the expected length of the issue and how support inquiries were handled overall during this time. I heard a
report that one of our support folks indicated that the issues would not be fixed until Tuesday, that was incorrect. We'll be looking closely at
how/why that statement was made.
