15.6.2008Windows XP going off market in June: What it means
Well it looks like XP is about to disappear from stores coming this June. Oh what shall I do If I still don't want to migrate to Vista? Well
actually it will probably still be for sale in stores and such but Microsoft itself will no longer sell it. Read on.
Microsoft originally
announced over a year ago that Windows XP would be going off the market in January 2008. XP was later given a brief stay of execution, to June 30,
2008. That deadline is fast approaching, which has led to much panicking from people who aren't quite sure what XP's "going off market"
means, exactly.
People are still as confused as ever. So let's take a stab at clarifying, once again, what's going to happen by
answering some frequently asked questions about XP's imminent disappearance.

06.06.2008Windows XP Support Extended until 2014
Microsoft has finally given in to public demand. The company has decided to offer technical support for Windows XP with updates and security patches
for an extended period until April 2014. However, it will not go back on its decision to discontinue Windows XP sales after June 30.
This
means that after June 30, Microsoft will stop distributing Windows XP as a stand-alone product, as well as stop licensing it to PC manufacturers like
Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others. However, it doesn't mean that XP will disappear overnight. Consumers may still find copies of the software or
computers pre-loaded with it for months, as stores and PC makers typically work through their inventories.
Also, as per an announcement
made at Computex earlier this month, the software giant said that 'nettops' better defined as PCs with limited hardware or ultra-low cost PCs
will be available with Windows XP until January 2009.

26.06.2008Microsoft Pledges Windows XP Support Until 2014
Although it may be moving down in availability with computer manufacturers it looks like Microsoft is going to be standing by Windows XP for a good
while yet. The company has pledged to keep supporting the OS until 2014. According to Microsoft senior VP Bill Veghte, the support will include
security patches and "other critical updates," and he adds that "customers who still need Windows XP will be able to get it," despite plans to
stop selling a retail product and stop licensing it directly to PC manufacturers after June 30th of this year. This extension means that Microsoft
will be supporting the OS for 13 years since its initial release.

the company's most serious
threat rating. Exploit code
for two of the bugs -- one in

the ActiveListen and
ActiveVoice ActiveX controls
are flawed -- was tagged
"critical" in IE6 on Windows
2000 and Windows XP SP2, and
"critical" in IE7 on both XP
SP2 and Windows Vista.

14.06.2007Official: Microsoft extends Windows XP's stay
Bowing to pressure from customers and computer makers, Microsoft plans to keep Windows XP around a little longer.
Large PC
manufacturers were slated to have to stop selling XP after January 31. However, they have successfully lobbied Microsoft to allow them to continue
selling PCs with all flavors of Windows XP preloaded until June 30, a further five months. Microsoft also plans to keep XP on retail shelves longer
and will allow computer makers in emerging markets to build machines with Windows XP Starter Edition until June 2010.
The move
indicates the continued demand for the older operating system, some nine months after Windows Vista hit store shelves.
In recent
weeks, several PC makers launched programs that allow new PC buyers to more easily "downgrade" their Vista Business and Vista Ultimate machines to
Windows XP. Fujitsu, which was among those lobbying for the change, has started including an XP restore disc in the box with all of its laptops
running Vista Business. ..

28.09.2007How to get Windows XP after June 30
Two weeks ago, InfoWorld launched a petition campaign to
save Windows XP. So far
we’ve gotten more than 70,000 signatures, thanks to a passionate response from
a wide range of XP users. We hope we can
persuade Microsoft to keep selling XP licenses indefinitely, past the June 30 deadline, after which Microsoft
has said no
more shrink-wrapped or OEM licenses will be available for retailers, computer makers, and others to order. (Vendors
can
continue to sell by June 30 any XP licenses they ordered from Microsoft, but when they run out of those, they can't get
more
to sell.)
We fully acknowledge that, even if we get a million signatures, Microsoft may stick with its original plan. If new
Windows
XP licenses come to a screeching halt after June 30 as currently planned, what can IT do to get more XP seats? The
answer
depends on your licensing arrangement with Microsoft. The short answer for most users, though, is that Microsoft will
let
people with Vista Business or Ultimate "downgrade" to Windows XP Pro under specific circumstances.
Here, based on Microsoft's published documentation and on the company’s responses to our questions, is InfoWorld's guide to
how you can get new XP licenses after Microsoft officially pulls the plug.

28.01.2008Dell launches final Windows XP PC systems
Retail and direct OEM sales of Windows XP will be drying up by the end of this month, so it should not be too surprising that vendors are pushing out
their XP inventory this month. Dell has added three final systems to its XP lineup, which customers will be able to order until June 18.
We have received word from the manufacturer that Dells last XP systems added will be the Inspiron 530s (from $549) and 530 (from $799), as
well as the Inspiron 1520 notebook (from $799). All systems come with Windows XP Home Edition, Intel processors and at least 2 GB of system memory.
The models XPS 210 and XPS 630 models also remain available until midnight June 18.

16.06.2008Microsoft: June 30 not end of Windows XP support
Concerned that customers are confusing the impending end of Windows XP retail availability with the end of support, Microsoft Corp. has reminded users
that the aged operating system will be supported until early April 2014. Jared Proudfoot, a manager in Microsoft's support life cycle group,
reiterated the final support dates for Windows XP in a post to a company blog.
"Recently, there have been a number of posts in the
blogosphere about Windows XP and the upcoming end of direct OEM and retail license availability," said Proudfoot. "Some people are interpreting this
as the end of support for Windows XP."
Not so, Proudfoot said. Windows XP will remain in what Microsoft calls "mainstream support" to
April 14, 2009, and continue in "extended support" though April 8, 2014, he added. The former delivers free fixes -- for both security patches and
other bug fixes -- to everyone. During the latter, all users receive security updates, but nonsecurity hot fixes are given only to companies that have
signed support contracts with Microsoft.
Those are not new dates, Proudfoot reminded customers last week. In early 2007, for instance,
Microsoft extended support for Windows XP Home and XP Media Center to the 2009 and 2014 dates to match those already set for Windows XP
Professional.

23.04.2008Microsoft Investigates Blocked Patch Updates in XP
Microsoft officials say they are investigating reports that files the company deployed this summer prevent Windows XP users who run a built-in
"repair" function from installing as many as 80 of the company's latest security patches.
"We are aware of reports about
customers not being able to download some updates from Windows Update when using the latest version of the Windows Update client and after
reinstalling Windows XP system files from CD," a Microsoft spokesperson said Sept. 27. "We take this issue very seriously and are investigating the
root cause of this behavior and what options are available to address it."
The issue was brought to light by Scott Dunn, a
writer and associate editor with Windows Secrets Newsletter. According to Dunn, the problem is stealthy updates deployed by Microsoft in July and
August. The files prevent Windows XP users who utilize the repair function from installing recent patches...

28.09.2007Windows XP Definitely Dead In June
A spokeswoman for Microsoft says that, despite what Steve Ballmer said last week, Windows XP will no longer be supported after this June. Confusing
the matter even more is the fact that OEMs can still continue to sell XP in certain circumstances.
"We feel we've made the right
accommodations for customers in certain segments who may need more time to transition to Windows Vista," she said. "But as Steve noted, we maintain
a constant stance of listening to our customers and our partners. That's what is guiding our plan, and will continue to guide us going forward."

29.04.2008Despite deadlines, Windows XP to be sold a few more years
June 30 of this year and Jan. 31, 2009, may be the deadlines for U.S. retailers and custom system builders, respectively, to sell Windows XP. But, due
to exceptions Microsoft has made, the operating system will be available for at least the next two years for those who purchased business and Ultimate
versions of Vista, as well as for customers in certain geographies.
Microsoft has made it widely known that it will stop
distributing XP to U.S. manufacturers and retailers on June 30, while custom system builders can put XP on hardware until Jan. 31, 2009. But what is
probably less known -- and not because Microsoft has been hiding the fact -- is that Windows XP Starter Edition, a scaled-down version of the OS for
emerging markets, will be available until June 30, 2010.
Moreover, business and end-users who have purchased Windows Vista
Business or Ultimate licenses either at retail or through enterprise agreements with Microsoft have indefinite "downgrade" rights to XP as part of
their license agreements, according to a Microsoft spokeswoman.

01.04.2008Microsoft's stealth updates stymie XP repairs
The contentious stealth update that Microsoft delivered to customers this summer blocks 80 patches and fixes from installing after Windows XP is
restored using its "repair" feature, researchers said today.
Scott Dunn, who first reported the problem in a story posted
Thursday morning to the
"Windows Secrets" newsletter, said that users who
reinstall Windows XP with the repair option cannot retrieve the full set of updates from Windows Update (WU). The problem, he said, has been traced to
the so-called "stealth update" to WU which Microsoft has acknowledged sending to users beginning in July.
Two weeks ago, Dunn
broke the story of the background updates, which were sent to most non-corporate Windows XP and Vista users. The updates were delivered and installed
without prior notification, even when the PC's owner had told the operating system not to download or install updates without notification and
permission.

However, Dell has said on its website that
XP machines will still be available in the Inspiron and XPS ranges. "We are able to offer the opportunity to purchase a Dell desktop with an OEM
