Microsoft has updated software that verifies whether a copy of Windows is genuine in its Windows XP Professional edition, making it similar to the
notification in Windows Vista and thus more persistently visible to users. In a blog posting attributed to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft director of
product marketing and management, the company said it made the changes to the Windows Genuine Notification (WGA) alerts for XP Pro because it is
"the product edition that is most often stolen."
Now when a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next
time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This
will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen's background. Previously, this was not a part of the WGA notification for Windows
XP Pro.

10.03.2006Vista SP1 vs. XP SP2 - Part Deux
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Following the
benchmarks I carried out last week, I
decided that the PC Doc HQ lab rats needed to pull a few all-nighters and carry out some more benchmarking tests on Vista SP1 and XP SP2. Is it
possible to determine conclusively which is the faster, more responsive OS?
One of the main criticisms of my initial benchmark
tests was that I overlooked the fact that, under the hood, Windows Vista SP1 works differently to XP SP2 in the file copy department. The difference
is down to caching and how Vista carried out uncached I/O while XP caches the files. On top of that is the further complication that the file
transfer progress bars are coded to work differently. Vistas file copy dialog box goes away when the cache is committed, while under XP the copy
dialog goes away while the committal is still pending. In other words XP is coded to appear fast...

29.08.2008Windows XP: Whats really happening on June 30, 2008
In a thinly-veiled publicity stunt, Infoworld is seeking sign-ups for
an online petition to
“help save XP” by sparing it the fate of “being discontinued on June 30, 2008.”
There are a couple of
problems here. First, Windows XP is not being “discontinued” on June 30. Instead, as of that date unless the software maker issues
another reprieve like it did in September 2007 Microsoft will
no longer make XP available to OEMs for preloading and/or via retail sales.
Users still will be able to get XP preloaded on new machines from white-box vendors/system builders through January 31, 2009. And
Vista Business and Ultimate
customers with volume-license contracts
can still get XP via their “downgrade” rights (as far as I can tell from attempts to decipher Microsoft’s fairly convoluted
documentation around this issue).

14.01.2008InfoWorld launches drive to save Windows XP
The clock is ticking for Windows XP, the tried-and-true Microsoft operating system that millions of businesses and individuals depend on. Soon, the
only Windows option will be Vista, an operating system that businesses as well as individuals have disliked and often avoided. The lackluster changes
to Vista, coupled with the high costs of switching tens of millions of computers to it, have convinced InfoWorld that XP should not be retired as
planned on June 30.
"Over the past year, CIOs and CTOs have consistently told me they see no significant benefits to Vista, and
really don't want to spend the time and money to update all their computers, retrain their users, and deal with application incompatibilities for a
cosmetic upgrade," said Galen Gruman, executive editor at InfoWorld.

Windows Server 2003 to gain
such improvements. However,

codebase from ServerNT to
WinNT, which will enable
locked features and transform
Windows Server 2003 into a
more compatible, and usable OS
like Windows XP. After
converting, your OS will
perform like Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition.
Finally you can gain all the
advantages of running Windows
Server 2003, without the
compatibility headaches!..

21.08.2006Informal Windows Vista SP1 vs XP SP2 Performance Tests
Mikael at the Futuremark Forums ran a few benchmarks of Windows Vista SP1 (presumably the latest RC Refresh) vs. XP SP2 with some surprising results.
It seems that having 8GB RAM with SuperFetch enabled doesn't hurt...
I just reinstalled Vista Home Premium 64-bit and thought
I'd run some tests. These are just a bunch of quick benches I did to satisfy my own curiosity, but I thought I'd share them with you guys. The test
config is as follows:
Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.2GHz (8*400)
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3
8GB DDR2-800 4-5-4-15
GeForce 8800GT 512MB (stock)
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB <--- Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1
Samsung SpinPoint T166 320GB
<--- Windows XP Professional SP2
Some excerpts from the conclusion:
- The general usage tests are either
faster or equal to XP. However, Vista is on the slower drive (the WD), so it only makes the results even more impressive.
- Crysis was almost
certainly not cached into RAM during the test, but still loaded faster than in XP.
- The horrendous file copy performance has been fixed.
Performance is definitely higher than in XP. Also gone is the sometimes irritatingly long file delete times. File deletion seems instantaneous now,
just like it's always been in XP.
- Crysis: Performance is down 5-8% when looking at DX9 32/64-bit benches and DX10 is even worse off. The CPU
test is also curious with a WinXP performance lead of 15%! This was definitely unexpected and something that would be interesting to research further.
- Loading the image for the Photoshop test was about twice as fast in Vista compared to XP and it was the first time that file was loaded so it
couldn't have been cached.
- Gaming performance is still a let-down and it seems we'll have to live with it.
- SuperFetch has a very
large impact on program load times.

28.04.2009Microsoft To Release XP SP3 Next Week
Now that Windows Vista service pack 1 has been released, all eyes have shifted to Microsoft's plans for Windows XP service pack 3, the final
package of updates for the trusty OS. And, according to at least one source, Microsoft will roll out XP SP3 next Monday. As of Wednesday afternoon
Pacific time, the BitTorrent search engine Mininova listed a 568.73 MB Windows XP Professional SP3 5503 file available for download. The file, which
had 112 seeds and 417 leeches, had been downloaded 2083 times since it was posted Tuesday, according to the listing.
According to the file
description notes, Microsoft will release the final version of XP SP3 on March 24, but the 5503 test build passes all Windows Genuine Advantage checks
and is able to download Windows updates that previous XP SP3 builds weren't able to, which suggests that it could, in fact, be the final RTM
build. When Microsoft released Vista SP1 in February, the final RTM code was identical to the Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC) 1 Refresh 2 test build
that was released to a group of 15,000 testers two weeks earlier.
A Microsoft spokesperson, perhaps weary from the months-long barrage of
Vista SP1 related inquiries, said the final version of XP SP3 is still on target to be released the first half of calendar year 2008, and the XP SP3
5503 build was a minor interim build released to address one specific issue for a subset of private beta testers.

21.03.2008Microsoft Taking Official Petitions to Keep XP Alive
If you can remember back a few weeks, Steve Ballmer went on record saying that Microsoft would consider extending the life of Windows XP if enough
people asked for it. Afterall, many people don't want to upgrade to Windows Vista because they are perfectly content with XP. The problem was
there was no way to ask for it. Sure, you could sign one of the many online petitions, but Microsoft considers those "non-official complaints" and
the rest of us simply consider them silly.
Well, word has been passed down to the tech support teams (and then on to Neowin) that they are
to begin logging any calls that come in for the sole purpose of requesting an extension to the retail life of Windows XP. The calls will be logged
and, if enough complaints are filed, Microsoft will consider giving XP some more time (no pinky promises, though).
If you wish to file an
official petition yourself, you can simply call the Windows XP Home Edition support numbers for your country and let the operator know that you wish
to file an official complaint. Because we're so nice and want to save you the trouble, here are the numbers for a majority of Neowin's
visitors:
- United States: (866) 234-6020
- United Kingdom: 0870 60 10 100
- Canada: (800) 936-8479
If your country
isn't listed, you can visit the
Microsoft Support Site,
choose your country, choose Windows XP Home Edition as your product and then go to 'Contacts' for the appropriate support number.

05.03.2009Windows XP SP3 Yields Performance Gains Over Vista SP1
After a disappointing showing by Windows Vista SP1 (see previous post), we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Windows XP Service Pack 3
(v.3244) delivers a measurable performance boost to this aging desktop OS. Testing with OfficeBench showed an 10% performance boost vs. the same
configuration running under Windows XP w/Service Pack 2.
Since SP3 was supposed to be mostly a bug-fix/patch consolidation release - unlike
w/Vista SP1, Microsoft made no promises of improved performance for XP - the unexpected speed boost comes as a nice bonus. In fact, XP SP3 is
shaping-up to be a "must have" update for the majority of users who are still running Redmond's not-so-latest and greatest desktop
OS.
Of course, none of this bodes well for Vista, which is now more than 2x slower than the most current builds of its older sibling.
Suffice to say that performance-minded users will likely choose to stick with the now even speedier Windows XP - at least until more "Windows
7" information becomes publicly available.
