Windows Live Messenger v8.0.0562 was released exclusively to selected Beta-testers earlier this month. Fortunately for WLM users (including invitees) a new build very similar to 0562 is now imminent.
It could've been released already, if it wasn't for weather-inflicted damage to many offices in Redmond last weekend. So, if you're currently using Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0365, expect an auto-update prompt in one of the next couple of days.

21.12.2007Samba will move to GPLv3
The new version 3 of the
General Public License got a
major endorsement Monday from
the project leaders of Samba,
widely used open-source
software for networked file
sharing and printing.
"After internal
consideration in the Samba
Team, we have decided to adopt
the GPLv3 and LGPLv3 licenses
for all future releases of
Samba," said Jeremy Allison,
a Samba project leader. "We
feel this is an important
change to help promote the
interests of Samba and other
free software."
The
Free Software Foundation
released GPLv3 in June,
bringing significant changes
regarding patents,
compatibility with some other
licenses and the use of GPL
software in consumer devices
such as personal video
recorders. With GPLv3
complete, attention now
focuses on how widely adopted
it will be. ..

10.07.2007Microsoft co-operation working well: Samba author
Co-operation between Microsoft and the developers of the open source Samba protocol is going much better since a landmark settlement late last year,
according to the software's original developer.
In
December, Microsoft agreed to make documentation relating to its workgroup server products available to the Samba team under a non-disclosure
agreement.
The non-disclosure agreement was brokered on behalf of Samba by the Protocol Freedom Information Foundation (PFIF), an
organisation that seeks to facilitate the exchange of free and open source software information. PFIF, which paid a one-off fee of 10,000 euros for
the documentation, is part of the Software Freedom Law Center.

31.01.2008Canonical discloses Samba Vulnerability in Linux
Canonical has disclosed a security vulnerability that affects various versions, including the latest version 7.10, of its Linux distribution, as well
as corresponding versions of Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Xubuntu. The flaw occurs because Samba, an application which provides seamless file and print
services to SMB/CIFS clients, does not correctly check the size of reply packets to mailslot requests. It is therefore possible for a remote attacker
to execute malicious code by sending a specially crafted domain logon packet, assuming that domain logon is enabled on the server. Thankfully, it is
disabled by default in Ubuntu and upgrading libsmbclient as well as samba to the latest versions for the OS fixes the issue.
Update:
Several members have noted in the comments that this is, in fact, not a vulnerability limited to Ubuntu, but is a problem with samba itself. We
recommend keeping up to date, no matter what distribution you are using.

19.12.2007Microsoft Working For Samba Interoperability
Andrew Bartlett of Samba fame has written a document describing
their recent collaboration with Microsoft's Active
Directory team. In brief, it would seem that the sky is falling, as Microsoft's engineers seem to be really committed to making Samba fully
interoperable with AD. They have organized interoperability fests and have knowledgeable engineers answering technical questions without legal or
marketing drones getting in the way. However according to Andrew the Samba AD team is currently very short on manpower, so if you have network
experience, now is the time to get coding.

14.11.2006Patched Macs Vulnerable to Samba Bug
Mac OS X is running with an
outdated and vulnerable
version of the open-source
file and print program Samba,
according to Symantec's
DeepSight Threat Analyst Team.
The vulnerabilities, first
published on May 14, involve
multiple heap-based buffer
overflow weaknesses in
Samba's NDR remote procedure
call request. The
vulnerability affects Samba 3
versions prior to 3.0.25. The
DeepSight Threat Analyst Team
recently discovered that Mac
OS X includes Samba 3.0.10.
Samba hasn't been updated on
the Mac platform since that
version, according to a May 26
team journal entry. On the
same day, the team managed to
exploit the heap-corruption
vulnerability on a fully
patched Mac OS X 10.4.9 system
that was running the default
Samba 3.0.10 program.
Samba doesn't run on Mac OS
X systems by default; use
requires that the operating
system be configured to have
the "Windows Sharing"
service enabled, accessible
under the Sharing option under
Systems Preferences. The
DeepSight Threat Analyst Team
said mixed-platform networks
may be more likely to have
that option enabled. The team
is advising Mac OS X users to
upgrade to the latest Samba
version, 3.0.25, from Samba's
official site. Otherwise,
users can disable the Windows
Sharing service until Apple
has an official update
available via its Software
Update service. The team also
advised users to select the
lock function to avoid
inadvertent re-enabling of the
service.
This
command can confirm whether
Samba is running (if the
command returns data, the
service is still running):

11.03.2008PGP creator shows off VoIP encryption app
PGP creator Phil Zimmermann is
now focusing his crypto skills
on making VoIP calls more
secure. At the Black Hat
security convention in Las
Vegas, he showed off his
latest version of the Zfone
client that encrypts VoIP
calls. Zfone can be easily
used with most VoIP clients
and, according to Zimmermann,
will appear in future
hardware-based VoIP phones.
Zfone itself
is actually a daemon that runs
under your VoIP client in the
IP protocol stack. It
implements the ZRTP protocol
which is an extension of the
regular VoIP RTP protocol.
Zimmermann, along with Alan
Johnston and PGP CTO Jon
Callas, submitted the protocol
to the IETF as a draft
standard last year.
Zimmermann told
us, śYou can still use your
favorite client on top and
Zfone secures the call.ť
Basically
you can think of Zfone as a
VPN client for your VoIP
because it provides an
encrypted tunnel for calls.
The protocol adds four bytes
of authentication on every
voice packet and encrypts the
RTP data payload with AES
128-bit or higher encryption.
Zimmermann said the protocol
is lightweight and modern
computers shouldnt experience
any noticeable CPU slowdown...
