The Pirate Bay tracker gone for good

Today marks the end of an era, the end of The Pirate Bay tracker. The website is still up and running, but the owners of The Pirate Bay have decided to turn off their tracker and will not be re-enabling the tracker, leaving the DHT enabled for now. With the end of The Pirate Bay, the largest BitTorrent on the Internet, it appears that the courts have finally made an impact on pirating around the world. This makes a success for MPAA and RIAA, finally managing to get enough service providers to disconnect The Pirate Bay, making it extremely difficult for them to relocate and keep the site running.

The Pirate Bay purchase approved by shareholders

On Thursday, The Pirate Bay got moved step closer to being sold to a Swedish software company that hopes to turn the world's largest BitTorrent tracker into a legitimate pay-to-download service, which will be based on how much computer power you share with the website. GGF (Global Gaming Factory) shareholders approved the $8.5 million transaction on Thursday this week, four months after TPB's four co-founders were convicted and found guilty of facilitating copyright infringement. GGF intends to, within weeks, turn TPB into a subscription based service, even though no major content providers have agreed to grant them a license.

The Pirate Bay four get an appeal

The Swedish court has ruled that the Pirate Bay four will receive an appeal, scheduled for November 9, 2009. The Pirate Bay four were convicted of "assisting in making copyright content available" through their website, The Pirate Bay. The ruling had put massive fines on the Pirate Bay four, at $3.6 million ($905,000 each) in fines and face up to one year in prison each. Since the trial, the Swedish government has ruled the four defendants "too broke" to pay for the damages. Instead the Swedish authorities started sending cease and desist letters to one of the Pirate Bay's ISP, bringing the website down. The website was later restored within hours of the shut down.

The Pirate Party has received significant attention since the Pirate Bay Trial. The party is predicted to gain 5.1% of all votes in the EU elections, which are taking place this June. Should they gain that, they would be guaranteed a seat in the EU Parliament. The party has over 41,750 members, and will soon be the third largest political party in Sweden. The Young Pirate youth organisation, associated with the Pirate Party, is currently Sweden's largest youth organisation, based on the amount of members it has.

"Biased" judge: retrial for Pirate Bay Four?

According to the Local, it appears that Tomas Norström, the judge who presided over the case against the Pirate Bay Four, may have had a conflict of interest which could have led to bias and an unfair trial. The Pirate Bay Trial: The Official Verdict - Guilty

After months of deliberation, the fate of the operators of "The Pirate Bay" has nearly been decided. The final verdict in the ongoing case was decided just a short while ago, Peter, Fredrik, Gottfrid, and Carl, with a full year in prison for said people.

Despite the valiant efforts by the operators' defense, they were declared guilty, but on what grounds? "Assisting in making copyright content available," was the prosecution's argument. Not many people agree with the verdict, which is why we're all hoping for a successful appeal. It's not the end of the line yet - the final decision could still be years away. Regardless of the outcome, Peter Sunde has assured the world that the Pirate Bay will continue to operate despite the unfortunate developments - the website is not on trial - just its operators.

Hopefully the direction will turn, and they'll get out unscathed - they didn't really do anything wrong.

Hardware thin-client turns XP Home, Linux into 10-user terminal server

Local firm MUPtech showcased its proprietary thin-client hardware to turn an Win XP Home and XP Pro system into a multi-user server, running up to 10 remote clients per machine using ultra-thin set-top-boxes as clients instead of full PCs.

The firm sells these thin black boxes which the company calls "MUP-PC" which are connected to the main "server" - actually any PC capable of running XP Home or XP Pro - over Ethernet. Each box features connectors for Audio, VGA video, and PS2 keyboard and mouse. The hardware also supports Linux.

The host PC runs a proprietary software "server" which turns a standard XP Home or XP Pro into a multi-user server. It would be like Citrix or Terminal Services but without a PC on the client side, replaced instead with this black box. Where have I heard of this before? Oh yes, Sun Ray thin clients. Basically this is like having a VNC client in a set-top box, to which you can hook a PS2 keyboard, mouse and speakers. Their technology is proprietary, though.

The Pirate Bay officially sunk

Today marks victory for Swedish authorities and Hollywood and a sad day for file sharing. Today the Swedish Authorities have ordered The Pirate Bay to be taken offline immediately or the ISP could face heavy fines of 500,000 Kroner ($70,600 US) a day. The Pirate Bay's ISP had no choice but to comply and disconnect the website from the Internet. The take down of The Pirate Bay comes 3 days earlier than expected, as the site was going offline on August 27 or legalize the site before then, which was unlikely to happen.

The Pirate Bay sale unlikely to happen

Some of the biggest news recently, in the shady side of the Internet, was that torrent search engine The Pirate Bay was to be sold and then converted into a legal operation. Many people were quite distraught about this, though optimistic, due to the sheer number of similar sites out there, but it appears that all this fuss might be about nothing. TorrentFreak are reporting that the potential buyers, Global Gaming Factory, haven't gathered enough money to buy the website, and that the owners of The Pirate Bay have given them a week before the deal is off.

Swedish Police Attempt to Block The Pirate Bay

A press release from the Swedish Pirate Party is reporting that the Swedish police are attempting to block access to The Pirate Bay by reclassifying it as a child pornography site. ISPs would then be asked to voluntarily block access to all Swedish citizens.

The Pirate Bay has been a thorn in the entertainment industry for its nearly four year existence. They have also thwarted numerous legal attempts to force it off line, including a May 2006 raid that failed to negate this immensely popular BitTorrent tracker.

Because of the inability to banish this nuisance from the face of the Internet, the Pirate Party is taking the position that this latest attempt is nothing more than a desperation move by the authorities...

The Pirate Bay must pay half of their fees now

The Pirate Bay is having a bad time after losing the court case about copyright infringement, and the threat of spending up to a year behind bars due to the massive public torrent web site. The debt collectors now wants nearly half of the money owed (out of the $3.6 million US owed) soon, or the four web site owners could face stiffer penalties. The owners behind The Pirate Bay may see bank accounts frozen if the money is not paid soon, putting The Pirate Bay in a rough spot, especially if they cannot afford to pay their monthly server fees to keep the web site online.

The Pirate Bay trial and a tough new Swedish law

According to the Local, various members of the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) have taken the stand in the ongoing trial against the Pirate Bay now unfolding in Sweden. The Pirate Bay: The Site is Safe, Even If We Lose in Court

In an few hours from now The Pirate Bay team will probably be charged with aiding or facilitating copyright infringement. If they are found guilty, they could receive sentences of up to 2 years in prison, but the site will remain online, no matter what. Last month, the Swedish authorities announced that they were planning to press charges against 5 people involved with The Pirate Bay, stating that the 5 individuals will be charged with “facilitating copyright infringement”.

Today, after nearly two years of collecting evidence, the prosecutor will officially press charges. But, no matter what the outcome of the case, The Pirate Bay says that they’re here to stay.
