20.2.2008USB 3.0 Specifications released
The new standard for USB (Universal Serial Bus) 3.0, also known as SuperSpeed USB, has released the specifications for its next major upgrade. USB
3.0 is meant to surpass its current predecessor USB 2.0, which supports up to 480 Mbps data transfer. The USB 3.0 will support speeds up to 4.8 Gbps,
roughly 10 times faster than USB 2.0. The new standard is expected to be more power-efficient over its predecessor. Your old devices will not be
garbage just yet, since USB 3.0 will be fully backwards compatible with your old devices, supporting USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0.

USB 3.0 is racing towards the finish line. The current draft spec is expected to be signed off by the end of this year, and within 12 months were

Its a fast pace for the equally fleet-footed technology, which is the

Is Intel delaying USB 3.0?
According to a report from EETimes.com, Intel has pushed plans to support USB 3.0 in its chipsets back until 2011. Without Intel's support for the
standard, motherboard and gadget makers will be forced to hold off due to the expense of using third party controllers. Also known as SuperSpeed USB
and developed by the USB 3.0 Promoter Group - Hewlett Packard, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments - USB 3.0 promises
speeds of up to 4.8Gbit/s. At the Intel Developers Forum 2009 last month, it was unofficially revealed that Intel planned to start offering support
for USB 3.0 in early 2010, but then "shifted its plans out a year," according to the EETimes.com.

USB 3G modems won't fit in the MacBook Air
Ouch, we just tested and confirmed that one of the smallest (and thus likeliest to fit) USB EV-DO modems around, the Sprint / Novatel U727, won't
even come close to fitting in the cramped, foldaway USB port on the MacBook Air. Most flash drives will probably be okay, but it looks like 3G users
will either need powered USB hubs or a USB extension cable to get online where WiFi isn't available (read: most places). Of course, your mileage
may vary -- we recommend testing your modem of choice on a live machine in an Apple store before dropping any coin.

Laptops without USB cables
Dell and Lenovo today
announced the first notebooks
with embedded Certified
Wireless USB chips, which will
enable cable-free connections
to USB peripherals hooked up
to Certified Wireless USB hubs
that D-Link and IOGear also
announced. Additionally,
D-Link and IOGear announced
Certified Wireless USB
adapters that you can plug
into USB ports to add the
functionality to notebooks and
PCs that don't have it built
in.
The notebooks
(the Dell Inspiron 1720 and
Lenovo ThinkPad T61 and T62p),
wireless hubs, and wireless
USB adapters from D-Link and
IOGear are the first products
to receive Wireless USB
Certification from the USB
Implementers Forum. They're
expected to ship in time for
back-to-school and
holiday-season purchases.
Eventually, these notebooks
and other PCs equipped with
wireless USB chips will be
able to connect to a new
generation of peripherals that
will also carry embedded
wireless USB. But for now, the
most likely use will be with
legacy USB peripherals
connected to wireless USB
hubs. You could, for example,
use one of the notebooks to
print documents on a
conventional USB printer
plugged into a wireless USB
hub.

Zune firmware hacked for USB drive goodness
I was unaware that you couldn’t use the first-gen Zune as an external drive via USB without hacking it and now, apparently, the new firmware has
locked down that hack. I wouldn’t know, I hardly used my Zune since I didn’t have enough hard drive space on my MacBook to install
Windows, which I’ve done since my upgrade to Leopard and I finally got myself an external.
Oh, XP, how I’ve missed thee.
Nevertheless, the crafty folks over at the Zunerama forums have figured it all out and now you may resume using your Zune as a USB drive.
The usual disclaimers apply: backup your registry first; be very careful; and don’t blame us if things go wrong.

IOGEAR Ships Wireless USB Hub, Finally
At long last, IOGEAR annouunced the availability of its Wireless USB hub, which will
pair wired USB connections with the ability to send information wirelessly across short distances.
IOGEAR's product is
officially known as the GUWH104KIT, and consists of a router with four wired USB hubs. Wirelessly, it can connect to three different Wireless USB
adapters or notebooks. It is priced at $199.95.
IOGEAR actually announced its product in June 2006, although the first Wireless
USB certifications were performed earlier this year. IOGEAR, however, has used a chipset from Alereon, while the first laptops from Lenovo (together
with D-Link and Belkin) used a chipset from WiQuest. Both the IOGEAR and Lenovo products have been certified by the USB Implementers Forum, certifying
that they will interoperate with one another.
The Wireless USB solution was designed primarily for the PC, allowing USB devices
to be placed throughout a room without concern for their location. Traditionally, the devices have been rated at up to 480 Mbits/s over 10 meters,
although overhead and wireless interference can affect that.
The product is compatible with current and future Certified W-USB
devices, and is backward interoperable with USB 1.0 solutions, IOGEAR added.

USB 3.0 battle heats up
nVidia and AMD are looking to wrest control from Intel over the specification for USB 3.0.
USB 3.0 is the next-generation high-speed
connection standard due out next year that is expected to offer 10 times the speed of USB 2.0.
At issue is that Intel is allegedly not
giving the specification to competitors in the CPU or chipset markets. Intel responds that it is "working hard to get the complete spec" to the
industry. One source close to Intel alleges that nVidia and Intel are seeking the "host controller "specification that Intel says is beyond the USB
3.0 specification.

Wireless USB 1.1 to Be Finalized in the First Half of 2008
The Wireless USB promoter group on Monday announced that they are developing the Wireless USB 1.1 specification. Based n the already finalized
Wireless USB 1.0 spec, advancements include new options for first-time association of devices, improved power efficiency, and support for UWB
frequencies above 6GHz.
śThe Wireless USB 1.1 Specification builds on the key features “ speed, ease of use, and security “ that
have made the 1.0 specification so successful. The Wireless USB Promoter Group will define new features that make a great specification even better to
improve product offerings for manufacturers and ultimately enhance the end-user experience,ť said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF president.
Among the features of the WUSB 1.1 is a new method for first-time device association “ the process to securely connect hosts and devices. Wireless
USB 1.1 will support the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities, which is a proximity-based approach that allows users to easily introduce
devices to their PCs through touch-and-go action. The Wireless USB 1.1 specification will also include updates to enhance power efficiency for better
battery life, as well as add UWB upper band support for frequencies 6GHz and above.
