Microsoft releases XP mode RC for Windows 7

Microsoft has released updated bits of Windows XP Mode for Windows 7. XP Mode is a method to provide better compatibility in Windows 7, and to pull it off with as little trouble as possible. It's also dubbed XPM, or formerly Virtual XP. XPM is built on the next generation Microsoft Virtual PC 7 product line, which requires processor-based virtualization support (Intel and AMD) to be present and enabled on the underlying PC, much like Hyper-V, Microsoft's server-side virtualization platform. XP Mode will bring a Virtual PC-based environment, as well as a fully licensed version of Windows XP SP3, free for all owners of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions. XPM will provide 100% compatibility with Windows XP.

Verdict: XP Mode gets an F

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: I've been using Windows 7's XP Mode feature for a few days and I'm now ready to give you my verdict ... and it gets an F.

Don’t get me wrong. The idea behind XP Mode is a valid one, and the fact that Microsoft is finally ready to accept that users should be able to run older versions of Windows as part of the license for the newer OS.

But … there are problems with XP Mode, and here I’ll point out six issues with XP Mode that lead to me giving it a failing grade...

Windows XP Mode RC Available

Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 makes it easy to install and run many of your Windows XP productivity applications directly from a Windows 7-based PC. It utilizes virtualization technology such as Windows Virtual PC to provide a Virtual Windows XP environment for Windows 7.

Windows XP Mode provides a 32-bit Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (SP3) environment pre-loaded on a virtual hard disk. Client virtualization software, like Windows Virtual PC is a pre-requisite to use Windows XP Mode.

Note: Upgrade from Windows XP Mode Beta to Windows XP Mode RC is not supported. Uninstall Windows XP Mode Beta and Windows Virtual PC Beta (if applicable) before installing this RC release. Click here for more information.

Lower profile XP Mode (N) for Windows 7 omits Media Player 9

In a move which could very rapidly multiply the number of total users of Windows XP N way beyond the paltry number of users, mostly in Europe, who invested in the product in 2005, Microsoft this morning quietly released a separate version of the release candidate for its XP Mode virtualization system for Windows 7. This version creates a virtual envelope for Windows XP N, the version Microsoft created without Media Player 9 pre-installed, to appease the European Commission.

Sony laptops disable Windows 7's XP Mode

It's not looking good for Sony Vaio owners who were looking to get their hands on a hot, fresh release of Windows 7 - Sony has disabled hardware virtualization in their laptop range, thus rendering Windows XP Mode in Windows 7, and many other Virtual Machine Based products, such as VMware and Virtualbox pretty much useless. Sony claims that they are disabled for "security" reasons - which doesn't really seem to make any sense; Sony has also said that they will re-enable hardware virtualization on "select" laptops from the Vaio range.

Windows 7 to have an 'XP mode'

Microsoft is trying to make it easier to sway users of Windows XP onto the latest version of its operating system.

For some time now, the company has been quietly building a "Windows XP mode" that uses virtualization to allow Windows 7 to easily run applications designed for Windows XP. According to sources familiar with the product, the application compatibility mode is built on the Virtual PC technology that Microsoft acquired in 2003, when it scooped up the assets of Connectix.

Windows 7's Achilles' heel - XP Mode

According to security firm Sophos, Microsoft risks undoing much of the work it has done on the security front over the past few years by shipping XP Mode with Windows 7.

Sophos’s Chief Technology Officer Richard Jacobs doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to outlining the issues:

XP mode reminds us all that security will never be Microsoft’s first priority. They’ll do enough security to ensure that security concerns aren’t a barrier to sales, but not so much that it gets in the way of “progress”.

Ouch. It gets worse...

Windows 7 and XP virtualization: What you need to know

Microsoft's new Virtual XP Mode requires hardware virtualization, but with all the news surrounding this feature, users are wondering "Am I able to run Virtual XP Mode?" Even though people may recommend you run Securable to check and see, the problem is, Securable may not display results accurately, even if your BIOS says that hardware virtualization is turned on as evidenced by this forum thread. Thankfully, Microsoft is aware of this, and has created this page to help you out. The pages gives you ways to identify if your processor supports hardware virtualization, and gives instructions on how to check the BIOS settings of Dell, HP, and Thinkpad systems to see if it's turned on.

Microsoft uses green tactics to push Vista

Briony Smith: <...> In a pro-Vista move, the company commissioned a report from Info-Tech Research on the power consumption of Windows XP versus Windows Vista, which was released today, and announced Vistas energy-efficient supremacy over XP when it comes to sleep mode. The default settings of Vista put the system into sleep mode much faster and automatically than XP triggers its own standby mode.

Jennifer Colasanti, a research consultant with Info-Tech Research, said that tests were run on two different laptops and two different PCs in several different states. The advanced default settings had a definite impact on power consumption. If your business is running a fleet of Vista PCs, then you can reduce your carbon emissions by half, she said.
