23.04.2009Microsoft releases XP mode RC for Windows 7
Microsoft has released updated bits of Windows XP Mode for Windows 7. XP Mode is a method to provide better compatibility in Windows 7, and to pull

7 product line, which requires processor-based virtualization support (Intel and AMD) to be present and enabled on the underlying PC, much like
Hyper-V, Microsoft's server-side virtualization platform. XP Mode will bring a Virtual PC-based environment, as well as a fully licensed version
of Windows XP SP3, free for all owners of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions. XPM will provide 100% compatibility with Windows
XP.

It's not looking good for Sony Vaio owners who were looking to get their hands on a hot, fresh release of Windows 7 - Sony has disabled hardware

Windows 7 to have an 'XP mode'
Microsoft is trying to make it easier to sway users of Windows XP onto the latest version of its operating system.
For some time
now, the company has been quietly building a "Windows XP mode" that uses virtualization to allow Windows 7 to easily run applications designed for
Windows XP. According to sources familiar with the product, the application compatibility mode is built on the Virtual PC technology that Microsoft
acquired in 2003, when it scooped up the assets of
Connectix.

Sophos’s Chief Technology Officer Richard Jacobs doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to outlining the issues:
XP mode reminds us all that security will never be Microsoft’s first priority. They’ll do
enough security to ensure that security concerns aren’t a barrier to sales, but not so much that it gets in the way of
“progress”.
Ouch. It gets worse...

Windows 7 and XP virtualization: What you need to know
Microsoft's new Virtual XP Mode requires hardware virtualization, but with all the news surrounding this feature, users are wondering "Am I able

accurately, even if your BIOS says that hardware virtualization is turned on as evidenced by this forum thread. Thankfully, Microsoft is aware of
this, and has created this page to help you out. The pages gives you ways to identify if your processor supports hardware virtualization, and gives
instructions on how to check the BIOS settings of Dell, HP, and Thinkpad systems to see if it's turned on.
