03.04.2008Don't slipstream XP SP3 on Windows Vista!
This just in from Bink, seems he had a pretty interesting weekend attempting to Slipstream XP SP3.
"So I build a new Windows XP ISO with
SP3 integrated, this is a Volume License editions (VOL) which only accepts Volume License Keys (VLK). When I want to install it on a clean machine, I
noticed that setup prompts for a product key and it does not allow me to continue, which should be a new feature in XP sp3. OK so I fill in the VLK
but it does not accept it, I try another one from a customer of mine, does not work either. Angry
I found out that the problem is when you
do the XP Sp3 slipstream process on a WIndows Vista machine, the API gives a different response and screws up the PID process. This is a bug and
Microsoft knew about this in December, still the bug remained and made it all the way to RTM, nice work Microsoft.
So XP SP slipstream only
on XP or 2003 machines!!!"

12.09.2007ISO Takes Control Of OOXML
Alex Brown, head of the ISO work group responsible for OOXML, has posted a summary of their latest meeting, and he also comments on the resolutions
discussed there. The basic message is that ISO now has '
full responsibility for the standard,' and that
several workgroups will be established to work on OOXML. An interesting point here is that 'setting up a maintance
procedure for ODF, and then
working on cross-standard initiatives' is one of the explicit goals.

Challenges coming to ISO Open XML vote?
Now that Office Open XML (OOXML) has been certified as an ISO standard, there is a possibility that the vote leading to that result will be
challenged. It seems Microsoft is already counting on it.
The ISO on Wednesday officially announced that Open XML received enough votes
to become a standard, reversing a previous attempt in September that failed.
But there have been
several reports of "irregularities" in the voting of the 87 national standards bodies that participated.
Those complaints could
lead to a formal appeal of the votes which, under ISO rules, need to be lodged by those countries in the next two months.

Google: OOXML makes a mockery of ISO process
The head of Google's open-source programs on Monday urged international delegates to vote against certifying Office Open XML as an ISO standard,

Delegates from international
standards bodies are meeting in Geneva this week to resolve technical comments submitted after Office Open XML (OOXML) failed to pass as a standard

Adobe hands over copyright to PDF format
Adobe has expressed interest in making the movement of digital document files more open, and having their format (PDF), being the popular standard.
PDF's will soon become the international standard for electronic documents after Adobe handed over the copyright to ISO.
"By releasing
the full PDF specification for ISO standardization, we are reinforcing our commitment to openness", says Kevin Lynch, CTO at Adobe.
Most
businesses use PDFs as the main way of transitioning from paper to electronic documentation, and now a slew of new readers, writers and development
tools for the format will likely be unveiled in the near future thanks to the move.
The new PDF standard is called ISO 32000-1.

Open Office XML standards row heats up
Microsoft is facing growing criticism of its bid to have Office Open XML (OOXML) accepted as an international standard ahead of a crucial vote by the
ISO scheduled for February.
Redmond initially promised that the ISO would have control of OOXML if and when it became a standard.
Critics reckon Microsoft is now backsliding on this
promise via plans to retain indirect control of the standard through Ecma International, the group that originally rubber stamped OOXML.
The proposals have raised concerns that the ISO would be unable to make OOXML compatible with existing standards, leaving the ISO relegated
to the role of publishing a list of errata (corrections), with Ecma left in charge

ISO votes to reject Microsoft's OOXML as standard
Microsoft Corp. has failed in its attempt to have its Office Open XML document format fast-tracked straight to the status of an international standard
by the International Organization for Standardiza
The proposal must now be revised to take into account the negative comments
made during the voting process.
Microsoft expects that a second vote early next year will result in approval, it said Tuesday.
A proposal must pass two voting hurdles in order to be approved as an ISO standard: it must win the support of two-thirds of voting
national standards bodies that participated in work on the proposal, known as P-members, and also of three-quarters of all voting members.
OOXML failed on both counts, according to figures provided by Microsoft, and by other sources with knowledge of the voting process. ISO has
not yet officially announced the results.

Sun's ODF plugin for MS Office now available
The Sun ODF Plug-in is an
extension to Microsoft Office
that allows it to read and
write ISO standard ODF files.
It supports Office 2000, XP,
and 2003, and works on Windows
XP and Vista. It adds to MS
Office the ability to read and
write ODF text, spreadsheet,
and presentation files (.odt,
.ods, and .odp) - the ISO
standard editions of MS Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint files.
Furthermore, ODF text
files (.odt) can be made the
default format for MS-Word
thanks to this plug-in (and
double-clicking on an ODF text
file on the desktop would
automatically open it in
MS-Word).
Addressing
the accessibility concerns of
existing MS-Office users was
one of the key reasons behind
Sun's development of the ODF
plug-in, and I have been one
of several folks involved in
testing the accessibility of
this plug-in (along with
several beta testers whose
employees with disabilities
were likewise doing
accessibility testing).
