Microsoft Takes XP Starter Edition To Egypt, Turkey

Microsoft added two new versions of its bare-bones Windows XP Starter Edition Tuesday, one in Arabic for the Egyptian market, the other targeted at Turkey.

St arter Edition is a pared-down operating system that Microsoft introduced last year aimed at countries where piracy is rampant and incomes are low. Counting the new editions released Tuesday, Starter Edition is now available in nine languages and 32 countries.

The Arabic and Turkish versions will be distributed in partnership with the governments of Egypt and Turkey, respectively. "Building on our joint success in the Affordable PC Initiative 'PC for Every Home' that has delivered more than a quarter of a million PCs to Egyptian homes, we anticipate the new Windows XP Starter Edition will provide wider and more affordable technology access to the masses," said Dr. Tare Kamel, minister of communications for the Arab Republic of Egypt, in a statement.

Microsof t did not disclose specific pricing information for the two versions. ..

XP Home Edition Support Extended to 2008

For the past 2 weeks, the Windows community has been buzzing with news that Microsoft was scheduled to halt support for XP Home at the end of this year. (Apparently, Microsoft never expected that its next Windows release would take so long to ship.) Well, the crisis is over.

Microsoft this week revealed that it has extended support for XP Home (and a few other XP editions whose support was also scheduled to be terminated this year) to "2 years after the next version of is released," according to the company. If Vista ships on schedule at the end of the year, that means that Microsoft will continue supporting XP Home through late 2008. That's not too shabby.

Note that Microsoft's business-oriented Windows products have much lengthier support life cycles. Microsoft is supporting XP Professional, for example, through 2011.

Windows Server 2003 - XP Conversion Pack

Windows Server 2003 is well known for its superior speed, stability, and security when compared to Windows XP. This fact is proven by Microsoft's use of the Windows Server 2003 kernel in both Windows x64 Edition and the upcoming Windows Vista. Given this fact, it's no wonder that many Windows users have already switched to Windows Server 2003 to gain such improvements. However, these users will have no doubt also discovered that compatibility issues are common when using Windows Server 2003 as a primary home-use OS. Until Now... We are proud to present version 2.0 of Windows X's popular Windows Server 2003 - XP Conversion Pack. This tool will convert the Windows 2003 codebase from ServerNT to WinNT, which will enable locked features and transform Windows Server 2003 into a more compatible, and usable OS like Windows XP. After converting, your OS will perform like Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Finally you can gain all the advantages of running Windows Server 2003, without the compatibility headaches!..

Microsoft Plans Vista Upgrade Coupon For Holiday PC Buying

Microsoft later this month plans to roll out an Express Upgrade program that gives buyers of Windows XP-based PCs a coupon for a free or discounted upgrade to Windows Vista through March 15. As part of the deal, designed to drive PC sales though the holiday season, Microsoft will include coupons in each Windows XP SKU that will entitle users to a free or discounted Vista upgrade when the next-generation operating system ships in the first quarter of 2007, industry sources said.

For instance, customers who buy PCs equipped with Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Pro Tablet PC Edition and Windows XP Pro x64 Edition are entitled to a free upgrade to Vista, sources said. Customers will be responsible for fulfillment costs. Not all of the coupons will be for free upgrades. Customers who buy systems running Windows XP Home Edition can upgrade to Vista Home Basic Edition for a flat แ fee and to the higher-end Windows Vista Home Premium Edition for a cost of ๟.

Microsoft Taking Official Petitions to Keep XP Alive

If you can remember back a few weeks, Steve Ballmer went on record saying that Microsoft would consider extending the life of Windows XP if enough people asked for it. Afterall, many people don't want to upgrade to Windows Vista because they are perfectly content with XP. The problem was there was no way to ask for it. Sure, you could sign one of the many online petitions, but Microsoft considers those "non-official complaints" and the rest of us simply consider them silly.

Well, word has been passed down to the tech support teams (and then on to Neowin) that they are to begin logging any calls that come in for the sole purpose of requesting an extension to the retail life of Windows XP. The calls will be logged and, if enough complaints are filed, Microsoft will consider giving XP some more time (no pinky promises, though).

If you wish to file an official petition yourself, you can simply call the Windows XP Home Edition support numbers for your country and let the operator know that you wish to file an official complaint. Because we're so nice and want to save you the trouble, here are the numbers for a majority of Neowin's visitors:
  • United States: (866) 234-6020
  • United Kingdom: 0870 60 10 100
  • Canada: (800) 936-8479
If your country isn't listed, you can visit the Microsoft Support Site, choose your country, choose Windows XP Home Edition as your product and then go to 'Contacts' for the appropriate support number.

Microsoft may adjust limitations on Windows 7 Starter

According to Paul Thurrott, Microsoft will be lifting the three running application limit for Windows 7 Starter Edition. Previously with XP and Vista, Starter Edition was designed to run on low end equipment and be sold in what Microsoft called "developing markets." But for Windows 7, Microsoft moved Starter Edition into the rest of the world and decided to sell Home Basic in the developing markets instead. Starter Edition is expected to be sold on netbook class systems, so even if there isn't a software coded limit to how many applications you can run at one time, the limited amount of processor and memory resources in the computer will continue to be the deciding factor.

Microsoft exec calls XP hack 'frightening'

A Microsoft executive calls the ease with which two British e-crime specialists managed to hack into a Windows XP computer as both "enlightening and frightening."

The demonstration took place Monday at an event sponsored by Get Safe Online--a joint initiative of the U.K. government and industry. At the event, which was aimed at heightening security awareness among small businesses, two members of the U.K. government intelligence group Serious Organized Crime Agency connected a machine running Windows XP with Service Pack 1 to an unsecured wireless network. The machine was running no antivirus, firewall, or anti-spyware software and contained a sample target file of passwords to be stolen.

The SOCA officials wished to remain anonymous. One of them, "Mick," remained behind a screen while carrying out the hack into the unpatched computer of a fellow officer, "Andy."
