The fact that Microsoft has relaxed its antipiracy mechanism built into Windows Vista concomitantly with the release of Service Pack 1 failed
to stop hackers from providing a crack for the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Various reports point out that Genuine
Advantage Validation and Notifications versions 1.7.69.1 (1.7.0069.1) and 1.7.69.2 released in March 2008, following the March 18 availability of
Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, have been cracked.
The workaround is designed to be integrated
with pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista in order to render useless the WGA Validation mechanism. According to the reports, applying the
WGA crack will permit users of counterfeit versions of Windows to access and download items from Windows Update, Microsoft Download Center and
Microsoft Update. The pirated operating systems with the cracked WGA will pass all validations on Microsoft's websites and offer anything from
updates to applications that are restricted to users of genuine operating systems only.

Technologies" according to a report by Mary-Jo Foley. However, the "Genuine" brand isn't completely disappearing. A press release states that

Microsoft's 'Get Legal' Program
Microsoft is providing businesses with unlicensed software-and the partners supporting them-a new option to purchase Windows XP. Yeah, Windows XP.
It would be so easy to dis Vista, particularly given last week's XP OEM licensing extension, but
Microsoft's program makes sense. Windows XP is the right focus.
The new program, GGWA (Get Genuine Windows Agreement), complements
another, GGK (Get Genuine Kit), launched in summer 2006. Microsoft channel partners fulfill both programs, which provide businesses a way to get legal
copies of Windows XP on PCs that shipped without operating systems or that are loaded with unlicensed software.
"The channel partner
serves our mutual customer and continues to be that trusted advisor," Cori Hartje, Microsoft's Genuine Software Initiative director, told me this
afternoon.
Microsoft is more concerned about getting business customers legal than chasing them down and branding them as software pirates.
Through the GGK program, Microsoft partners provide CD media to businesses, which Hartje said was too much hassle for many IT organizations.

a whole lot to “punish” those it deems to be running non-Genuine versions of Office. However, as part of a new OGA notifications pilot program — which

Microsoft tweaks anti-piracy check for Windows XP
Microsoft has updated software that verifies whether a copy of Windows is genuine in its Windows XP Professional edition, making it similar to the
notification in Windows Vista and thus more persistently visible to users. In a blog posting attributed to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft director of
product marketing and management, the company said it made the changes to the Windows Genuine Notification (WGA) alerts for XP Pro because it is
"the product edition that is most often stolen."
Now when a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next
time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This
will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen's background. Previously, this was not a part of the WGA notification for Windows
XP Pro.

It seems that Microsoft has been unsuccessful with SP1 in preventing hackers from turning a pirated, non-genuine copy of Vista into genuine copies that pass activation. The article initially looked at two of
the most popular hacks (OEM BIOS hack and the grace timer hack) but after a little digging ZDNet were able to transform a non-genuine install into a
genuine one. 'After a few minutes of searching the darker corners of the Internet and a few seconds in the Command Prompt I was able to fool Windows
into thinking that it was genuine.'

Windows Genuine Advantage suffers worldwide outage.
Late last night we started receiving reports from readers experiencing problems with Windows Genuine Advantage authentication. Users of both Windows
XP and Windows Vista were writing to say that they could not validate their installations using WGA, and one user even said that his installation was
invalidated by the service.
We contacted our sources at Microsoft, who told us off the record that the company is aware of a major WGA
server outage affecting users across the globe. The Windows Genuine Advantage support forum has exploded with complaints, as a result, and Phil Liu,
WGA project manager, says that he won't sleep until the problem is fixed. Windows Vista and XP are affected, 32- and 64-bit versions.
