09.01.2008Microsoft Accommodating Eee With Lightweight XP
In what could be a first Microsoft is working to
create a
special build of Windows, just because Windows doesn't run very well on a certain computer. ASUS' runaway success Eee PC is now 'officially'
available with Windows XP, but (according to APC magazine) is not exactly a great experience. There are none of the nice pre-loaded apps that come
with the Linux version, for example. And XP has some real problems coping with the screen size and limited system specs of the unit. As a result, ASUS
says it is going back to Microsoft and working on a special XP build that will be lightweight and more suited to UMPCs.

Windows XP SP3 release to web date has been delayed thanks to a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System. Surely this

In the last few days, we

1 (SP1). In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the
web. To help protect customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems
running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to the web.

02.07.2008Five reasons why XP will never die
Preston Gralla: Microsoft is doing its best to kill Windows XP, but that's not going to happen. No matter what the company does, the operating system
will live on. Here are five reasons why XP will never die.
Enterprises want XP
There's no escaping the
simple fact that enterprises have snubbed Vista, and show no signs of abandoning XP. Just a few days ago, Forrester said that a survey of 50,000
enterprise users found that throughout 2007, Windows XP use remained at a steady 89%. Vista grew from zero to 6% in that same time, but that came
about because users moved from Windows 2000 to Vista, not from XP to Vista. Don't expect corporations to switch to Vista from XP in 2008.

28.04.2006Why does Windows XP generate so many logon failure events?
Eric Fitzgerald: I got the question last week, why there are so many logon failure events on Windows XP when it is not domain joined.
The short answer is, by design. (Yes, bad design.)
The longer answer is that the shell team is working around the fact that
there is no "tell me if this user account has a blank password" API.
When in a workgroup (not domain joined), Windows XP
displays a welcome screen that has little pictures (called "tiles") for each user who is permitted to log on to the computer.
The shell team wanted the experience that when you click on a tile, that you will immediately be logged on if your password is blank (we have good
data that a large percentage of home users have blank passwords). They only want you to be prompted for a password if you actually have a password.
Fair enough, and it also helps with accessibility for people for whom typing is challenging.

10.11.2007Slideshow in the Windows Live Photo Gallery
We didnt do much to the Slideshow feature in the Windows Live Photo Gallery, but there have been several questions coming in about this feature, so we
thought that it was worth a brief rundown of whats changed.
In a nutshell, heres how the slideshow feature works in this
release:
- XP users: Basic slideshow only (equivalent to the ˜Classic theme on Vista). No transitions, and no support for videos. The rich
themes are very dependent on the Vista graphics model, so it will take a fair amount of work to get the rich themes working on XP (more than we could
bite off for this release).
- Vista users (basic graphics hardware): The experience should be unchanged from Vista. You may see a limited
set of themes available, and may or may not see transport controls depending on the capabilities of your graphics card.
- Vista users
(premium graphics hardware): The experience should be unchanged from Vista.
We
blogged about the Vista Slideshow experience previously. Most
of this still applies (with the exception of the above notes). One exception is that although the rich themes were only available on certain Vista
SKUs, all themes are available in all Vista SKUs (again, depending on your graphics hardware).

20.09.2007Microsoft Statement on Expanding Support for Low Cost Flash Based Computing Devices
As part of Microsoft Corp.s Unlimited Potential effort to bring the benefits of technology to the next 5 billion people by transforming education,
fostering local innovation, and enabling jobs and opportunity, Microsoft today announced plans to further expand flash-based Windows XP support for
low-cost hardware computing devices. This builds on the success of similar support for devices such as Intel Corporations Classmate PC and ASUS Eee
PC, complementing Unlimited Potentials focus on transforming education in emerging segments.
As part of this commitment,
Microsoft plans to publish formal design guidelines early next year that will assist flash-based device manufacturers in designing machines that
enable a high-quality Windows experience. In addition, there will be limited field trials in January 2008 of Windows XP for One Laptop per Childs XO
laptop. Microsofts goal is to provide a high-quality Windows experience on the XO device; if this is achieved, then Windows XP for the XO could be
available as early as the second half of 2008.

12.12.2007Windows Vista Facts
James Senior: It's always nice to have a few throwaway stats about Windows Vista that you can give to someone when you are combating someone who
believes that XP is "good enough" for them. I'd like to share a few with you over the coming weeks and I'll start with a new page on
www.windowsvista.com that has some interesting stats on Vista that you might not know about.
- Windows Vista-based PCs resume
from sleep in less than 6 seconds.
- PCs running Windows Vista that are equipped with 512 MB memory experience a performance boost of up to
40% with ReadyBoost technology
- Windows Vista users generally experience 20 percent fewer application "hangs" than those running Windows
XP
- Superfetch, an ingenious new Windows Vista technology, helps your computer adjust to your schedule, so your apps are ready to go
before you even launch them. Use Microsoft Outlook every morning? Superfetch will serve it up just in time for breakfast. Play the same game every
night? Superfetch gets your computer ready for the next big win. Waiting less means you can do more. Only on Windows Vista.
- Based on
their first 180 days of availability, Windows Vista has been shown to have fewer vulnerabilities than Windows XP or MacOS X 10.4
- PCs
running it are 60 percent less likely to be infected with viruses, worms, and rootkits than PCs running Windows XP SP2
- Windows
Vista-based PCs are almost three times less likely to be infected with potentially unwanted software than Windows XP-based PCs.
- Internet
Explorer 7 is now blocking nearly 1 million attempts to access these fake sites per week
