Seven Patches Coming From Microsoft

Microsoft expects to release seven security patches with four "Critical" and three "Important" bulletins as part of its upcoming Patch Tuesday release.

The critical patches affect Windows Server Service Packs for 2000 and 2003 versions as well as Internet Explorer, versions 5 through 7 and Outlook Express for Windows 2000, 2003 and Windows XP.

The common thread of the four "critical" patches is their remote code execution (RCE) implications, a risk consideration that has been pretty consistent over the last few patch release announcements. Microsoft suggests using Baseline Security Analyzer to flesh out any potential bugs or problems.

Meanwhile, the three "important" issues are more varied in nature, with two bulletins affecting almost all Windows OS and server versions, including multiple service pack releases of Windows 2000 and 2003, XP and Vista. A third patch is related to Windows SharePoint Services.

Exploits hot on the heels of Microsoft's patches

Exploits appeared within hours for two of the bugs that Microsoft Corp. fixed yesterday.

Microsoft's June set of security updates patched 15 separate vulnerabilities, nine of them labeled "critical," the company's most serious threat rating. Exploit code for two of the bugs -- one in Internet Explorer (IE), the other in Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 -- have been posted to the Bugtraq and Full-disclosure mailing lists by researchers.

A. Micalizzi went public with a pair of exploits -- one successful against Windows 2000, the other against Windows XP -- that leverage one of the six IE bugs patched yesterday. A bug -- actually two because both the ActiveListen and ActiveVoice ActiveX controls are flawed -- was tagged "critical" in IE6 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2, and "critical" in IE7 on both XP SP2 and Windows Vista. ActiveListen and ActiveVoice provide speech processing and text-to-speech to the browser. ..

Affected software includes Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Office XP, Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office Outlook and Microsoft Office for Mac.

Fewer patches != safer OS

Urs P. Küderli: Does one OS having fewer security patches than another operating system mean that the OS with the fewer patches is the safest OS? You know, Im not sold on that concept.

As we near the first anniversary of the consumer launch of Windows Vista well be seeing pundits all over the media taking a look back at the Vistas first year. One aspect of Vista that some will undoubtedly be looking at is patches and how many have been issued for Vista (in fact, my blogging colleague Ed Botts already done this). Many will interpret the fact that XP has had more patches rated critical and important than Vista as an indication that Vista is safer than XP (in fact, this is the conclusion that Ed himself came to).

Microsoft to issue critical patch for Office on May 12

Microsoft has issues a statement saying they will issue a "critical" patch this coming Tuesday to fix a flaw in Microsoft Office PowerPoint. The single update is oddly timed, after Microsoft released eight patches to fix 23 vulnerabilities only days ago. Critical patches are the highest rating Microsoft gives to updates, issuing an urgent warning to install the needed fix. The outstanding patch has been sitting idly by for almost a month until questions were raised on why it was missed during the latest patches. The vulnerability was reported almost a month ago, back on April 2, in Microsoft's Office PowerPoint can be triggered using rigged presentation files.
