At the Roots of Windows Blue Screen of Death
Unfortunately for Microsoft, one of the aspects of its proprietary operating system that has grown to become associated by default with the Windows brand is the Blue Screen of Death. BSOD, for short, is the result of a critical system error that will stop the operating system dead in its tracks and lead to a reboot.

26.06.2007Blue Screen of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained
Picture this: Its late at night, youre sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All
your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no
choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. Youve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed:
The blue screen of death.
Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. Its actually
a Windows śstopť screen, and is designed to do two things: tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue
(studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what
caused it is right there in front of you in blue and whiteand thats where we come in. Were going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error
details, so you can fix the problem thats causing them.

Previously scientists were only able to reproduce red and green OLED's but had stumbled upon finding a material for true blue OLEDs. No longer is
that the case as a group of researchers in Korea have claimed to have discovered the true blue OLED. This means that we will hopefully have consumer
OLED products on the market sooner rather than later. Why is having OLED on the market important? OLED products have greater field of vision,
better color quality and require less power. Overall it's a better value for the consumer and the environment.

13.09.2008Blue Pill virtualisation rootkit freely available
Rootkit specialist Joanna
Rutkowska has
provided
open access to the source
code of a new version of the
virtualisation rootkit Blue
Pill, which has been rewritten
from scratch. She presented a
prototype of the rootkit at
the Black Hat conference in
Las Vegas in 2006.
The new version of
Blue Pill has not just been
revised, it also offers new
functionality and, according
to the description, relies on
the virtualisation support
offered by modern processors
(HVM, hardware virtualised
machines).
It is claimed that the new
Blue Pill can migrate Windows
into a virtual environment
whilst it is running; without
restarting, and invisibly to
the user. This would make it
undetectable from within the
system using current detection
methods. The rootkit supports
AMD's SVM/Pacifica
virtualisation to infiltrate a
hypervisor into Windows whilst
it is running, but is not yet
able to utilise Intel's VT-x
virtualisation. Blue Pill now
also includes several
functions specifically aimed
at hindering recognition by
rootkit detectors. It is
apparently able to support
nested hypervisors and to
manipulate Time Stamp Clock
Register (TSCR) readings to
thwart detection of stolen CPU
cycles: a technique known as
RDTSC cheating. ..

04.08.2007Debugging Windows crashes with minidumps? Not at Lenovo
Michael Horowitz : Like many of you, my copies of Windows XP crash with the now-classic Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). When this happened a couple
times recently to a new ThinkCentre A61 tower, I called Lenovo tech support. As the title of this posting suggests, it did not go well.
When Windows XP crashes, the default behavior is to create a Minidump, a small file (only 88K) with a summary of, hopefully, the most
important information about the failure. I wrote about Minidumps back in November (see
Dealing with software crashes, Part 2). If your copy of
Windows has crashed (a.k.a. "blue screened") in the past, you may find a Minidump describing the problem in the
C:WINDOWSMinidump folder. The format of the filename is MiniMMDDYY-99.DMP (the last two numbers are
a sequence number).

22.02.2008Symantec: No 100% Undetectable Malware
Following another presentation
of the
Blue
Pill, the proof of concept
code authored by Joanna
Rutkowska, CEO of Invisible
Things Lab with the help of
Alexander Tereshkin Principal
Researcher, at this year's
Black Hat, after a similar
demonstration in 2006, on
64-bit Windows Vista, Symantec
has come out all guns blazing.
Peter
Ferrie, Senior Principal
Researcher, Symantec Advanced
Threat Research, opined that
there is no such thing as 100%
undetectable malware. And that
in this context, Rutkowska's
Blue Pill makes no
exception.
Rutkowska claimed from the
get go that the Blue Pill, her
example of visualization based
malware is undetectable.
Thomas Ptacek the co-founder
of Matasano Security, Nate
Lawson, security expert with
Root Labs and Peter Ferrie
from Symantec, challenged
Rutkowska and the undetectable
Blue Pill. Still, although
Rutkowska did accept their
challenge, the two parties
failed to agree on common
terms.
In
"Black Hat 2007 Las Vegas, I
co-presented with Nate Lawson
and Thomas Ptacek the
detection of hypervisors.
Previously, we had asked
Joanna Rutkowska to prove her
"100% undetectable" claim,
but she had declined. However,
we did manage to prove that
our methods work. Joanna
agreed that the TLB timing
method that I first described
in detail in 2006 works
against BluePill. As she
understood it, though, she
thought that I presented it as
a 'foolproof method for
"Blue Pill detection"'.
While I did present it as a
foolproof method, I didn't
refer to Blue Pill at all: I
said that it would reliably
detect a hypervisor, which it
does. That it detects Blue
Pill is a corollary," stated
Ferrie. ..

07.08.2007Breakthrough in Blue Lasers Yields 10X Write Times
Nichia Corporation of Japan
has announced a new
blue-violet laser that can
fill up a 54GB double-layer
disc at more than 10X record
speed, compared to typical 2x
and 4x Blu-ray/HD-DVD format
disc recorders. In other
words, instead of a 50 minute
write-time at 2x, the future
holds a 10 minute write-time
at 10x. According to blue
laser expert Steven DenBaars,
the key to faster write times
lies in the power of the
laser. Faster burn times allow
the disc to be rotated at a
higher speed. A 2X device can
sustain a write speed of only
8.99 Mbps, while a 10X laser
disc recorder can achieve a
writing velocity of 44.9
Mbps.
Nichia's new
blue-violet semiconductor
laser diodes can reportedly
operate at 320 mW
(milliwatts), while the
average current consumer grade
blue laser devices are in the
range of 20mW. " Writing
speed is totally dictated by
the output power. The more
power you have, the faster you
can spin the disk ,"
DenBaars said. The UCSB team,
led by blue laser inventor and
former Nichia researcher Shuji
Nakamura, recently
demonstrated the world's
first nonpolar blue-violet
laser diodes. The technology,
which is still two to four
years away, could eventually
produce blue laser diodes that
operate in the range of 500
mW.
