22.04.2008Microsoft Preps for Daylight-Saving Time Headaches
Microsoft is taking steps to ease the transition back from daylight-saving time.
Microsoft is trying to ensure that when
daylight-saving time ends and Americans turn the clock back in the first week of November, the experience is seamless.
That was
not the case on March 11, when daylight-saving time started three weeks earlier than usual.
It will also end a week later than
usual, on Nov. 4, as a result of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which extended daylight-saving time by a month in the United States, and came into
effect in 2007.
For those companies that do business in other parts of the world, the pain is not yet over. As much of the United
States and Canada "fall back" in November, there are going to be changes happening in Jordan, Egypt and New Zealand that were not planned in the
spring.

08.08.2009Windows XP gets another stay of execution
Microsoft has extended the final OEM and reseller delivery date for the Windows XP from January 31, 2009 to May 30, 2009. The cut off date for PC
makers to obtain licenses for the software was January 31, 2009. Still, vendors have to place their orders before the official cutoff date of January
31, but they dont have to take delivery until May. Microsoft granted the reprieve largely because of customer's preference for XP. Microsoft also
recently extended the Vista "downgrade" deadline for OEMs to July 31 and netbooks and low-cost laptops will be able to run XP until at least June
2010, so chances are you'll be able to get XP until Windows 7 ships.

04.09.2007Australia Daylight Saving - Revised Announcement - February 2008
Australia Eastern (New South Wales, Victoria, Australia Capital Territory and Tasmania) and Central (South Australia) time zones will extend daylight
saving and also harmonise start and end times commencing April 2008. From April 2008, daylight saving will end on the first Sunday in April and
recommence on the first Sunday in October in all states.
This change will affect Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office Outlook and
other Microsoft, third party and custom applications:
- All Microsoft Windows PC, server and mobile devices in the affected time
zones will need to be updated.
- Microsoft Office Outlook calendars may need to be adjusted. Client and Server-based tools to automate this
process are available from the Microsoft Download Centre.
- Microsoft, third party and custom applications which schedule events at future
dates should be reviewed to ensure they will operate correctly during the extended daylight saving period. Previously scheduled events may also need
to be adjusted.
- Microsoft recommends that all PC and server systems are updated regardless of location to ensure consistency of
operation.

15.01.2009Software Tweak Could Produce Gas Savings
Dutch scientist John Kessels
at the University of Eindhoven
says he has written code that
makes cars more efficient by
controlling a vehicle's
battery charging system.
Employing software to
dynamically switch a dynamo,
used to charge batteries in
conventional car designs, on
and off can have a significant
impact on mileage. The
professor claims the software
patch and an inexpensive cable
could be added to any car with
an onboard computer and
produce fuel savings in the
range of 2.6%. The software
patch for automotive dynamo
control still requires further
testing to evaluate its effect
on car batteries.
Kessels has been working
with automaker Ford to
increase engine efficiency
using the technique, which is
already being used
commercially in many hybrid
vehicles. Further gas savings
and resulting reduced carbon
dioxide emissions could be
achieved by actually switching
a car's engine on and off, as
long as more powerful starter
motors were used and other
changes to the car's
powertrain were made. Kessels
findings will be published in
the article "Energy
Management for the Electric
Powernet in Vehicles with a
Conventional Drivetrain,"
which is scheduled to appear
in IEEE Transactions on
Control Systems Technology -
Special Issue on Control
Applications in Automotive
Engineering, 2007.

13.02.2007FAQ: What the daylight saving shift means to you
Editor's note: This FAQ was originally published last spring. It's been updated to account for the fall changing of the clocks.
The fact that the U.S. is "falling back" a week late has left some folks with a few headaches, along with an unwarranted extra hour of
sleep.
Daylight saving time, which ordinarily would have kicked in last week, won't take place until next week. Congress is to
thank (or blame) for the change, which also meant daylight saving time started two weeks early. The thing is, computers weren't programmed with
legislative intent in mind. Many gadget and software makers have issued patches to adjust to the change, though not everyone has installed the
changes, and even people whose systems are now patched could see some calendar items showing up an hour off.
Here's a list of
some commonly asked questions and answers regarding the time shift.

29.10.2007Critical Windows patch may
wreak PC havoc
A Microsoft patch
meant to fix critical security
flaws in Windows 2000, Windows

users, the company said
Friday.
Th
e patch was released Tuesday

flaw, tagged "critical" by
Microsoft, lies in a Windows

Installing
the patch can cause serious

prevent the Windows Firewall

applications from running or
installing, and empty the
network connections folder,
among other things, the
software maker said. ..

16.10.2005Dell to Sell Windows XP Professional with PCs Through 2009
In a letter to some of Dells customers, they said that " XP Professional is available for OEM installation on your Dell PC purchases through at
least 2009 and likely longer." The "official" OEM and retail end date from Microsoft is June 30, 2008, just a few weeks away. There has been
much talk of whether Microsoft would bow to the demand of the consumers to keep XP alive, and with this it is still hard to tell if Dell bought a
years stock of licenses ahead of time, or if this is the precursor to an announcement from Microsoft.
Dell's plan for users is to have
Windows XP Professional installed on their machines, but include the Vista install disk for when they are ready to upgrade. "With XP installed,
we will send media for both Vista and XP with each PC so that when you are ready to migrate to Vista you may at no addition upgrade cost." The
demand seems high, so let's hope others follow suit to allow companies the time and resources to fully upgrade.
