180 Million Vista Licenses Mean What?
Microsoft shipped about 40 million Vista licenses in the second quarter, or 180 million since the operating system's launch. But how many Vista licenses were on new PCs? Not nearly enough.

11.12.2006Windows Vista Security at 180 Days
Windows Vista recently passed
the 180 day mark since it was
made available to business
customers. Just as he did at
the
90-day
mark, Jeff Jones, a
Microsoft Director from the
Trustworthy Computing group
and frequent blogger on
security topics, has done a
comparison of vulnerabilities
discovered in Windows Vista
versus other operating systems
in their first 6 months of
availability.
Windows
Vista holds up well in this
comparison, showing a
significantly improved
vulnerability profile over its
first 180 days of availability
compared to Windows XP and the
other operating systems that
were examined. Its
interesting to note that
Windows Vista is being
subjected to a greater level
of scrutiny than its
predecessor, as tools used by
security researchers have
become significantly more
sophisticated since Windows XP
was released.

21.06.2007The real lowdown on XP license deadlines
With the first end date deadline for the general availability of Windows XP just six months away, June 30, 2008, there are a number of XP licensing
questions that are still on the minds of internal licensing desk managers and enterprise IT departments.
Part of the confusion
comes from the terminology Microsoft uses to describe the end date for license availability, and part comes from the lack of a simple description of
what the terminology actually means.
Following conversations with three different Microsoft Volume Licensing Specialists, most of
InfoWorld's questions have been answered.
There are basically just three types of system licenses available...

05.10.2006Windows Vista No Longer Matters
Make no mistake: Microsoft has moved beyond Windows Vista, which will become all too apparent during this week's Professional Developer
Conference. Windows 7 is the future, and in many ways it's the present, too. Contrary to ridiculous assertions recently made by Microsoft CEO
Steve Ballmer, Windows Vista is a flop. If businesses aren't buying Vista, after waiting six (now seven) years, it's no success. Yet, during
the last day of the Gartner 2008 expo 10 days ago, Steve asserted that Vista "has been extremely successful."
A few days earlier, Steve
boasted: "Vista is our best-selling product ever. So, if that takes too much getting over—we're not going to have products that are much
more successful than Vista has been. We sold over 180 million copies in the first 18 months, quite successful." Really?
But who's
buying this "best-selling" product ever? "We have 180 million users, mostly on the consumer market," Steve said in an Oct. 2 speech. Oh? According
to Gartner analysts Neil MacDonald and David Smith, only about 10 percent of enterprises have adopted Windows Vista. That's not a high number,
particularly in context of the approximately six years between Windows XP and Vista.

27.10.2008Don't slipstream XP SP3 on Windows Vista!
This just in from Bink, seems he had a pretty interesting weekend attempting to Slipstream XP SP3.
"So I build a new Windows XP ISO with
SP3 integrated, this is a Volume License editions (VOL) which only accepts Volume License Keys (VLK). When I want to install it on a clean machine, I
noticed that setup prompts for a product key and it does not allow me to continue, which should be a new feature in XP sp3. OK so I fill in the VLK
but it does not accept it, I try another one from a customer of mine, does not work either. Angry
I found out that the problem is when you
do the XP Sp3 slipstream process on a WIndows Vista machine, the API gives a different response and screws up the PID process. This is a bug and
Microsoft knew about this in December, still the bug remained and made it all the way to RTM, nice work Microsoft.
So XP SP slipstream only
on XP or 2003 machines!!!"

17.01.2006Downgrade Plan for Windows 7 PC's
Deja Vu here? Just like they did with Windows Vista, Microsoft will ship Windows 7 in OEM machines with a license that allows customers to easily
downgrade to either Windows Vista or its 8-year-old predecessor, Windows XP. This license applies to businesses who buy VLK licenses and
consumers who buy a desktop or laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed.
While giving downgrade plans has been common in Redmond in the past,
a downgrade from an operating system released in 2009/2010, to one released 8-9 years ago seems a bit crazy. However, given the skepticism that, even
to this day, with nearly 2 Service Packs RTM'ed, still surrounds Windows Vista, Microsoft was essentially forced into providing that downgrade path.
Windows XP will soon be near-obsolete - even according to Microsoft, who will be ending mainstream support tomorrow. The availability of
that downgrade path is unfortunate, due to the number of advancements that have inevitably occurred over the past 8 years. If Windows 7 holds up to
peoples' expectations, maybe they won't have to step into the time machine, and we can finally continue on, full speed ahead, into the future.

13.04.2009OEMs to Continue Shipping XP
If you already own an XP license and are still hesitant to switch to Vista, Microsoft's "downgrade rights" policy, which initially began to be
exercised in 2001, may be in your favor if you would still like to purchase a machine running Windows XP after the June 30, 2008 deadline when
Microsoft will stop offering the operating system. OEMs such as Dell have said that they still have no plans to stop offering XP as an option:
"Dell has the ability to exercise 'Windows Vista downgrade rights' on your behalf in the factory if your business is still reliant upon
Windows XP and you'd prefer to have Windows XP Professional preinstalled on your PCs," according to their new downgrade policy section for XP.
"Downgrade Rights means that anyone with a Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate operating system can downgrade to Windows XP
Professional provided they have the media for Windows XP Professional."

27.04.2008Dell to offer Windows XP beyond June 30 cutoff
InfoWorld has confirmed that
Dell will sell and support
Windows XP to consumers beyond the June 30 Microsoft sales cutoff date that
Microsoft reaffirmed today, after earlier comments from
CEO Steve Ballmer seemingly indicated it might reconsider that decision.
Dell will take
advantage of a licensing option in Vista Business and Vista Ultimate that lets PC makers provide XP under the Vista license, which
Microsoft calls a
"downgrade"
license. (Enterprises with site licenses have these same rights with any version of Vista.) In essence, the user is buying a Vista license
that it can apply to XP, and Microsoft can still claim a Vista sale.

30.08.2007Official Way to Use Vista without Activation 120 Days
Official Way to Install and

By default,
Windows Vista can be

without any license, product
key or the need of activation
for 30 days grace period, for
purpose of trial or
evaluation. Although Microsoft
initially stressed that users
should purchase a license with

Windows Vista will lock into
Reduced Functionality Mode.
However, a "rearm" method
has long since been discovered
to be able to extend, or reset
the remaining time for
activation to another fresh 30
days, for up to 3 times.
Now Microsoft has
confirmed that Windows Vista
can be used and run for 120
days or 4 months ( 3
rearms ), and extending the
activation grace period is not
a violation of the Vista End
User License Agreement (EULA).
All versions of Vista include
Windows Vista Ultimate allow a
30-day free period without
activation, except the
corporate-oriented Vista
Enterprise, which supports
only a three-day trial.

29.03.20070-day Microsoft DirectX vulnerability discovered for XP
Microsoft warned yesterday that hackers are using QuickTime media files to exploit an unpatched 0-day vulnerability in DirectShow. In a posting on
Microsoft's security response center blog company officials confirmed the new vulnerability affects Microsoft DirectShow in Windows 2000, Windows
XP and Windows Server 2003, under limited attack. After initial investigation Microsoft have confirmed that the vulnerable code was removed as part
of their work building Windows Vista. This means that Windows Vista and versions of Windows since Windows Vista (Windows Server 2008, Windows 7) are
not vulnerable. An attacker would try and exploit the vulnerability by crafting a specially formed video file and then posting it on a website or
sending it as an attachment in e-mail.
