Microsoft hooks up Xbox Live subs with free Arcade title

Looks like Microsoft is going to do the right thing: as anticipated, Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten states in a letter to customers that, as recompense for nearly two weeks of outages, the group is offering up a full, free Xbox Live Arcade title free of charge. Sounds like it won't be until the next couple of weeks before the offer is active, but it will indeed apply to "all" Xbox Live members, and assuming it's for games worth more than 200 Microsoft points, it will be net positive for Gold users who lost about $1.64 worth of Live service over the last twelve days. Well done Microsoft, we think most will consider the stinging pain eased. Memo posted after the break.

Update: Confirmed, it's Gold AND Silver members. If you have an Xbox Live account, Microsoft just gave you a free game.

Urban Mining Grows as Gold Prices Soar

Those of you who have simply been throwing away old cell phones and electronics may have to think again: urban miners are taking full advantage of record metal prices by scavenging through the scrap metal in old electronic products in search of such gems as iridium and gold. The materials recovered are reused in new electronics parts and the gold and other precious metals are melted down and sold as ingots to jewelers and investors as well as back to manufacturers who use gold in the circuit boards of mobile phones because gold conducts electricity even better than copper. " It can be precious or minor metals, we want to recycle whatever we can, " said Tadahiko Sekigawa, president of Eco-System Recycling in Japan.

According to one study, a ton of ore from a gold mine produces just 5 grams (0.18 ounce) of gold on average, whereas a tonne of discarded mobile phones can yield 150 grams (5.3 ounce) or more. The same volume of discarded mobile phones also contains around 100 kg (220 lb) of copper and 3 kg (6.6 lb) of silver, among other metals. " To some it's just a mountain of garbage, but for others it's a gold mine, " said Nozomu Yamanaka, manager of the Eco-Systems recycling plant where mounds of discarded cell phones and other electronics gadgets are taken apart for their metal value.

Xbox Live Gold To Get Paid Content First?

As the fuss over Lumines Live! dies down (until they release another booster pack, at least), Microsoft's kicking up another bit of Xbox Live controversy as the fall gaming season kicks into gear by premiering downloadable content to XBL Gold subscribers before Silver members are allowed access. This practice started last night with the fantastic new Gears of War trailer.   "So here is the deal..Silver members WILL get access to this..probably in about a week. This is going to happen more and more (Gold getting things before Silver) so you may want to think about upgrading if you want all the latest and greatest trailers, demos etc." -- Major Nelson   Let's get this straight: out of nowhere, just as Microsoft's under close scrutiny for its marketplace content as it is, they decide to start charging for exclusive early access to downloadable content? At least Q Entertainment could've taken much of the blame for Lumines scenario, but not here. Scarier, the next step would be to start making content completely exclusive to paying members, rather than migrating the content over eventually.
