Dan, from Duluth, or 'goldeneyemaster' as he is known, told the game spot forum here that he thinks the main reason that the xBox 360 freezes is because the power supply overheats. The solution is to lift the power supply off the floor and allow the air to circulate better around it.

28.09.2006Microsoft denies any Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive possibility
Three years ago at E3 2006, Bill Gates, former CEO of Microsoft, announced a Xbox 360 HD DVD player that was capable of playing HD-DVD's. After
the bloody war between HD-DVDs and Blu-ray discs was over and HD-DVD's were no more, Microsoft decided to discontinue the HD DVD drive for the
Xbox 360. Since then there have been multiple rumours regarding a possible Blu-ray drive coming to the Xbox 360. While statistics from the Digital
Entertainment Group clearly show a spike in Blu-ray movie sales (91% in the first half of this year), Microsoft once again denied that a Blu-ray
player for the Xbox 360 was in the making.

19.02.2008Microsoft Releases Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator
Microsoft Corporation, one of the many backers of the HD DVD format, has unveiled its Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator. The tool enables film studios and disc
authoring companies to model the behaviour of HD DVD disc content, including encoded video and HDi interactivity, in a virtual environment, before
burning the HD DVD disc. The emulator uses a combination of available hardware (the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and the Xbox 360 HD
DVD Player) and specialized emulation software to ultimately enable playback of near-final assets from a network storage share, portable hard drive or
optical disc. This eliminates the need for expensive hardware or time-consuming and costly trial-and-error processes for testing HD DVD titles,
helping to ensure that titles ship error-free.

06.02.2008Microsoft: No plan for
internal HD-DVD on Xbox
A report surfaced on
Australian technology site
iTWire suggesting that
Microsoft eventually will
release an Xbox 360 that has
been revised to include an HD
DVD drive internally.
Microsoft currently
plans to release an external
HD DVD add-on for the Xbox
360, although an exact price
and launch date have yet to be
announced. What lends some
credence to the report,
however, is that it's Toshiba
(which is behind the HD DVD
format that's competing with
Sony's Blu-ray) that believes
Microsoft will be going the
internal route.
In fact, the article claims
that a senior Toshiba
executive has predicted that
Microsoft will release an Xbox
360 model with an internal HD
DVD drive before the end of
the year. "We have no plans
to release the Xbox 360 with
an internal HD DVD drive,"
Microsoft replied.

08.05.2006Xbox 360 Software Update Improves HD DVD Sound Quality, Compatibility
Last week, the Xbox
360 received its Spring
Dashboard software, and today
the console gets a software
update for its HD DVD add-on
peripheral. The most notable
in this update are
improvements to the player’s
ability to decode audio
streams.
Prior to the update, the
Xbox 360 HD DVD player had
difficulties decoding Dolby
TrueHD audio, leading some
titles, such as Nine Inch
Nails: Beside You In Time and
Poseidon, to exhibit “static
popping” and “clipping”
during playback. The new
software resolved all such
audio issues.
While
the HD DVD player supports all
audio formats for the spec,
the Xbox 360 hardware itself
is unable to output the true
lossless Dolby TrueHD stream.
Instead, the Xbox 360
downsamples the lossless
stream into a lossy bitstream
that can be outputted via the
console’s optical toslink
connection. Added in the new
software update is a full
bitrate 1.5 Mbps DTS and WMA
Pro as an option for downmixed
audio output, along with the
previous 640 kbps Dolby
Digital 5.1 option...

15.05.2007Xbox 360's HD-DVD uses 4.7 million lines of code
As a result of the
complexities of decoding HD
DVD audio and video content,
as well as providing a user
interface and DRM, over 4.7
million lines of code went
into the HD DVD software. The
external HD-DVD drive can play
H.264, MPEG2 and VC1 videos.
There is no hardware HD DVD
decoder chip set on board the
Xbox 360. As a result, the HD
DVD subsystem is almost
entirely written in software.
It's one of the most
demanding applications written
for the 360 to date, using up
all six of the system's
hardware threads.
Shaheen Gandhi, an Xbox 360
engineer, said: "At the
moment, the player software
pushes Xbox 360 harder than
any other (save, perhaps,
Gears of War during some
particularly busy parts of the
game)."

06.11.2006Microsoft stands behind HD DVD for Xbox 360
Microsoft's director of global marketing for the Xbox 360, Albert Penello, told BetaNews this morning that the company will continue to push an HD
DVD drive for the Xbox 360, but acknowledged the external nature would enable it to ship a Blu-ray drive if Sony's format became the new
high-definition standard.
Penello also said that despite the rumors, Microsoft has never planned to ship an Xbox console with an
integrated HD DVD drive, but the decision has nothing to do with the uncertainty in the format war. Because neither standard was finalized when the
Xbox 360 shipped, Microsoft opted to use DVDs.
Changing that now could lead to confusion among consumers, Penello added,
especially if game developers were to make use of the larger space on HD DVD discs. He admitted that Sony's inclusion of Blu-ray in the PlayStation 3
has helped that format, but said Microsoft's add-on HD DVD drive alone has outsold all standalone Blu-ray players combined.
