Microsoft to Make Exceptions for Xbox Live Arcade Limitations

When Microsoft launched Xbox Live Arcade, it imposed a 50 MB
size cap on all releases on its service. The reason for this was to maintain
compatibility for Xbox 360 owners who do not own a model
with a hard drive.

At the time, a 64MB Memory Unit was the only alternative,
explaining the need 50 MB limit. A year ago, Microsoft released
a 512 MB Memory Unit
, which paved the way for the Xbox Live Arcade game
limit to grow
to 150 MB
. A 256 MB Memory Unit is now standard issue on all HDD-less
Xbox 360 consoles
.

Even with the current Xbox Live Arcade limit three times what it used to be, some developers are finding 150MB simply not enough to fit in all game assets, particularly those intended for 1080p resolutions.

Xbox 360 Jasper motherboard with 512MB storage hitting US stores

When the Jasper motherboards started showing up in Xbox 360 consoles late last year there was reason for excitement -- quieter fans, more efficient design, and 256MB of internal storage to set gamers free of overpriced memory cards. Now the systems are receiving an unannounced storage boost, with an XboxHacker forum member braza noticing that his Japanese Arcade model sported a 4Gb Samsung NAND chip. That's twice the size of the old one, giving the equivalent of a 512MB internal memory unit. That first system was manufactured in April, and they're starting to hit US Arcade units as well...

Rumor of Xbox 360 SKU with Motion Controller

Recently there's been plenty of talk about the Xbox 360 price drops. The cheapest SKU out now; the Xbox 360 Arcade is said to go down to $200, which would make it the cheapest current generation console. Now rumor has it that it will also include a motion controller in its package. The Arcade SKU is said to include the usual arcade games, a 512MB memory card, the forthcoming Fall Dashboard Update preinstalled, and the motion controller as well as motion controlled games developed by Rare. It is said to release sometime in the Holiday 2008 season, but this leaves us wondering if this rumored SKU will be the same $200 rumored SKU said to be released in September.

It is said the motion controller will be sold separately and will be bundled along with a wider variety of games. No word on the price or release date has been confirmed yet.

Massive Failure Rate For Xbox 360 Exposed

Retailers are claiming that Microsoft has had to handle a failure rate of over 30% with their Xbox 360 console. More than 100 consumers have written to SmartHouse complaining of either poor service from Microsoft or total failure of their gaming console. One consumer was even given back a refurbished unit in exchange for their original Xbox console.

Several months ago SmartHouse raised the issue of potential problems with the Xbox 360 after several readers wrote to us complaining of persistent failures. Even one of our testing Xbox 360 systems that we use to review software failed and had to be returned to Microsoft for repair. Other consumers have complained of sending off their Xbox for repair only to get a different refurbished unit back.

During the past few weeks SmartHouse has received email after email from Xbox 360 owners complaining of problems. Ironically a lot of the problems seem to appear after 12 months of use.

Microsoft undercuts Wii value with $20 Xbox 360 HDD promo

As we head into the holiday season, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft will try every trick in the book in order to maximize sales. Xbox 360 with HDMI Spotted in the Wild

Information has just come in, from a trusted source who has asked to remain anonymous, that Microsoft has been working on and displaying a version of the Xbox 360 with an HDMI port built directly into the unit itself. The game system was being exhibited with it's external HD-DVD drive, but was being shown off in a very secretive fashion. Each showing was accompanied by an N.D.A. Details are a bit sparse at the moment, but the port was built into the Xbox 360 and did support HDCP functionality. Could Microsoft indeed be planning a second revision of the Xbox 360? Stay tuned with Neowin as we all await further information to come down the pipeline.
