21.02.2008Windows Home Server x64 Connector Announcement Coming at CES 2008
Good news is on the way for those of you who wish to use Windows Home Server with x64 home computers.
As many of you know, the
Windows Home Server Connector does not currently support x64 home computers, which has caused a lot of frustration and angst amongst early adopters of
the x64 platform. Microsoft have previously announced that they would provide x64 support for machines running Windows Vista (

the WHS Team for more) - those of you running Windows XP x64 will have to upgrade, unfortunately.

30.11.2007Next Release of OneCare Won't Support Vista x64
Peter GalliWhen Microsoft
announced that it was ready to
roll out Windows Live OneCare
version 1.5 to coincide with
the general release of Windows
Vista, it omitted one
important fact: the product
will not support Vista x64 or
XP x64. I received an email
this morning from a reader
telling me that the OneCare
v1.5 beta would not install on
his Vista test machine as it
was just for 32-bit systems.
"It would be nice, now that
64-bit Vista is set to go, to
specify if the software will
run properly in 64-bit," he
said. "Has this changed in
the final release? It would be
nice to know as I have OneCare
on all three home PCs, and
plan on upgrading all of them
to 64-bit Vista," he said.
So I asked
Microsoft, which confirmed
that, indeed, OneCare v1.5
would not run on Vista x64 or
Windows XP x64 for that
matter, "although it will
support 32-bit Windows on x64
hardware," a Microsoft
spokesperson told me. The
spokesperson was also pretty
non-committal about the
possibility of x64 support
going forward, saying "we
continually evolve OneCare to
meet customer demand, though
we have no further specifics
to share at this time around
potential support for x64 in
the future." My colleague Joe
Wilcox spoke to Gina Narkunas,
the lead product manager for
Windows Live OneCare, this
evening from London. She told
him that "it wasn't a
business priority to support
64-bit," because there is
"no consumer demand" for a
64-bit right now.

24.01.2007Early Vista SP1 64-bit installs causing new problems?
An iTWire journo by the name of Alex
has found yet another Vista
SP1 issue to bitch about, this time it's the x64 version and early reports are pointing to several problems. Anything from the "Windows
Performance Rating" vanishing, to the poor souls Treo not being recognized through "Windows Mobile Center" after SP1 installation. There could be
many explanations for this happening: Either the guys laptop is so sucky that Vista did him a favor by simply hiding crap results, and his phone may
no longer sync to Mobile center because he has so few friends and contacts it just isn't worth it.
Vista may of done the guy a
favour.
Or Vista is indeed broke, and Microsoft need to sort it. Either way I am sick of all the ranting as of late, so much so that I will
be installing Windows Vista x64 SP1 just to annoy websites like iTWire,
InfoWorld and CNet (Staff bloggers) and all of
their readers to show them that any normal user can install Vista x64 SP1 and have everything work afterwards. Meanwhile a whambulance has been
dispatched to the above mentioned sites to pick up the whiney tossers.

Dell pledges to restore x64 drivers
Following on from yesterdays post "Dell No Longer Supports Vista x64...and Other Rants", Neowin is happy to report that Dell have responded to
our reader Morpheus Phreak blaming the whole issue on a "web site glitch". Lets not forget however that Morpheus had already pointed out to
Dell support about their contract obligations to both Microsoft and the Customer to which the Supervisor responded "Our legal team are working on
that".
They must of come to the conclusion to add back the missing drivers!
In a Dell Support representative email response
he pledged to restore the missing updates by saying "Dell does provide both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista drivers for the XPS 410. Checking our website
it appears that the option for XP and Vista 64 are missing, I can get those added back." he goes on to say "Luckily most of the drivers
posted for Vista 32-bit also cover Vista 64. Some of the drivers like the network driver and most of the applications are limited to 32. For those
exceptions, the drivers are available on the Resource DVD and you can locate the drivers using the search feature (a difficult procedure at the
moment, I’m afraid)." without explaining exactly why its difficult, he finishes up the email with "Andy and I will work on getting the
64-bit OS selection added back."
It appears after many emails back and forth Dell are finally doing what they are good at, Customer
service. God forbid they forget exactly who it is that put them on a pedestal and who can just as easily knock em off!
Morpheus had this to
say ->

x64 Kernel patch causes random restarts, fix on the way
Microsoft has disclosed that update 932596, a patch released for the Kernel Patch Protection
feature that is included with x64 versions of Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, seems to be causing random restarts on
certain machines. A Stop error is then generated (error code 0x0000001E, 0x000000D1, or another Stop error code). x86 versions of Windows are not
affected since they do not include the Kernel Patch Protection feature (also known as PatchGuard), a technology that is meant to prevent third-party
interventions into the core of the operating system.

Live OneCare Home Page Crashes Internet Explorer 7 x64
So I'm sitting here trying to
get the Windows Live OneCare
version 1.6 story up on the
front page, and I can't
figure out why Internet
Explorer 7 keeps crashing.
I've never ever seen it crash
before. And yet, it always
seems to happily commit
suicide right before I'm done
putting the news article
together. I finally track the
problem down to the fact I
keep launching the OneCare
home page to grab the link.
Yes, you read
correctly. It would appear
that Microsoft's Windows Live
OneCare home page causes IE7
64bit to crash. I took the
liberty of downloading Firefox
x64 to make sure it had
nothing to do with 64bit web
browsers in general. Nope,
Firefox loaded the page just
fine. How embarrassing for
Microsoft. The issue has been
reproduced on two separate
Windows Vista machines with
entirely different
configurations. Can anyone
confirm the issue with IE7 x64
on XP?
Note: On
Vista x64, IE7 32bit will load
the site correctly.
