Xbox 360 to get new HD DVD drive next year

PC World UK is reporting that Microsoft plans to launch an updated HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 in 2008. The announcement was made in London by Mark Bennett, Microsoft's European business development director for HD DVD.

The original Xbox360 HD DVD drive, launched in November 2006, is fully compatible with Windows Vista and currently sells for $179.99 after a $20 price drop last month. Additionally, any purchases made between August 1st and September 30th will include five free HD DVD movies. Details on the new HD DVD drive are scarce at the moment; perhaps theyll include a video and audio decoder chip to lessen the burden on the console.

Microsoft Unveils Xbox Live Video Marketplace

On 22nd November Microsoft plans to launch it's video marketplace for Xbox Live. Last month I reported that the service recently surpressed the 4 million users mark and is still growing strong to go on to achieve higher figures. One technique to keep increasing its subscriber base is to introduce the new video marketplace.

The new video marketplace is set to deliver High Definition videos, films, television shows, music videos and game videos. All these will require some Microsoft points in order to download and watch on your HDTV, but it shouldn't be too expensive. The service will be available to both Xbox Live Silver and Gold members and promises over 1,000 hours of unique content by the end of the year, with at least 200 of that available in both standard and hi-definition.

We got our hands on a brochure for game developers at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif. today and are excited at what this little baby will do.

With a nine-foot cord, the camera will reach around large TVs. You'll be able to video chat over Xbox Live. There was a concept picture showing a game of poker and the pictures of excited gamers laughing and frolicking in their living rooms. There's of course the obligatory video recording.

Netflix has recently showed two significantly growing changes to the way they distribute content to the customer. One major change was streaming on the Xbox360 console, bringing movies, TV shows and other content directly to the living room over a streaming broadband connection.

Twitter hacked, personal documents leak

Twitter has once again come under attack from hackers, only this time instead of posting fake twits by celebrities, the hackers made off with over 300 personal and confidential documents. Some of these documents include credit card numbers, PayPal accounts, confidentiality agreements with companies such as AOL, Dell, Ericsson and Nokia, and some other documents include security key codes into the office building. The hacker or hackers have made the documents relatively easy to obtain through public Internet sources. Inside some of the documents mention partner discussions with Google, Yahoo and Microsoft for the last few months, including the Xbox360 dashboard update to include Twitter and Facebook, which was previously announced at E3.

Black Friday brings down online retailers

Amazon, like many other online retailers were brought down yesterday from eager users trying to get their hands on some limited offers from the sites. Sears.com, Saksfifthavenue.com, lowes.com, victoriassecret.com, amazon.com and many others were overwhelmed with internet traffic from users that the sites experienced down time due to too many users trying to get cheap black Friday deals. Much like last year, Amazon.com was hit the hardest again, offering electronics, video games, and personal media from 10% - 70% off some items, making Amazon.com a hot spot for online shoppers. Last year, Amazon.com was brought down due to black Friday shoppers trying to access the web site to save on things like Xbox360, and many other things.

Mano a mano: Apple TV vs. the Xbox 360

Jonathan M. Gitlin: Previously, I looked at the Apple TV in isolation, to see how it fits
as a digital hub. Apple isn't the only company that wants to have its
device at the center of your home entertainment though, nor the only
ones who want its storefront to be the one you use to download TV and
movies. So in this next installment, I shall compare the Apple TV to
what I think will be its closest rival, the Microsoft Xbox 360.
Yes, you read that right. I am going to compare a game console with
the Apple TV, but the comparison is not as far fetched as you might think. Both have
storefronts where you can download TV episodes and movies. Both will
rent you content in both HD and SD, and both will let you stream your
own media through them to your TV and speakers.

Xbox 3 being worked on

Kikizo recently interviewed Chris Lewis, a high-profile boss of Xbox 360 and Home Entertainment in Europe, confirming that Microsoft is working on the next Xbox gaming console. Nothing too heavy has been said in the interview, other than "You can't sit back on your laurels in this business. The consumer won't let you , the developers certainly won't let us. So that's happening right now. You'll see more over time...certainly we're not talking about the next version yet," Lewis told Kikizo. "So give us a chance to catch a breath, will you?".

A seperate news site uploaded a funny image of the next console's ring of light concept.

Microsoft attempting to patent automated console time limits

The idea of automatically limiting the amount of time kids can play video games is already one of the key features of Microsoft's Xbox 360 Family Settings. But is the approach worthy of a patent?

Microsoft apparently thinks so. In a patent application made public today, the company describes its approach for "Time-Based Access Control For An Entertainment Console," including the use of security codes and internal timers for parents to set the amount of time their children can spend playing the console each day or week.

Report: Buyers Think PS3 Will be Under 跌

A report by Compete says that 48% of US gamers surveyed think buying a PS3 will cost under 跌 at launch, and upon being told the actual launch price 60% thought it to be too expensive. It isn't all bad for Sony though, 63% of PS2 owners are thinking about buying a PS3, where just 39% of Gamecube owners are thinking of buying a Wii.

This survey would imply that Playstation owners are more loyal than Nintendo ones, especially as 40% of Gamecube owners questioned said they were thinking of buying a PS3 this time around. The report by Compete also looked at demand for consoles on online retailing websites. This month for the first time demand for both the PS3 and the Wii has exceeded that of the Xbox 360. At present, demand for the PS3 is the highest in the US.

Now all US gamers need is some PS3 consoles to buy.

1st Official HD-DVD drive for PCs

Buffalo will be launching the HDV-ROM2.4FB at the end of this month. Officially this HD-DVD drive (OEMed by Toshiba) will be the world's first HD-DVD drive for PCs. Some high-end PCs already shipped with HD-DVD drives, but until now it was impossible to buy any ATAPI HD-DVD drives sold independently for PCs. Next to HD-DVD discs, the device will of course also read all previous formats: DVDR/RW, DVDR/R DL, DVD-ROM and CD-R/RW/ROM.

The device will retail for about 38850JPY, thats ~337usd/254eur. Seems a bit expensive considering the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Addon is already available right now for just 199usd and can be used in Windows Vista (natively) and Windows XP (with some special drivers) too. The only thing missing in the Xbox360 HD-DVD package is PC software to playback HD-DVD movies. The Buffalo drive comes with PowerDVD HD-DVD Edition.

DivX Tech Preview Adds MKV Video Support to Windows 7

The latest DivX tech preview adds support for MKV video files to Windows 7, so you can use them in Media Center, Media Player, and even show thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

Windows 7 already includes native support for AVI/DivX files, but MKV files are quickly becoming the standard format for media files in HDand while you can play them using everybody's favorite, VLC Player, you won't be able to use them in Media Center or stream to an extender device like the Xbox360, and the thumbnails will just show a generic icon. Installing the DivX Tech Preview enables MKV support, so the video files will work in any application that relies on Microsoft's native media support, and even adds hardware acceleration for video decoding (if your video card supports it)...
