Microsoft Live Labs releases Volta Web toolkit

Microsoft's Live Labs, a standalone product research group, released on Wednesday Volta, a development tool designed to make it easier to partition an application's component pieces across a network.

The problem that Microsoft researchers are trying to address is the difficulty of deciding which part of the application runs under which tier--either the client or server.

Typically, developers need to write code to handle the communication between those tiers. And they need to decide during development on how to best architect their applications for optimal performance.

Interview with Don Lindsay, Microsoft Live Labs

If you think of all the innovative, cool and realistic technologies Microsoft has shown to the public in the past year or two, Photosynth would easily top that list. That’s pretty amazing for a research group that’s only been existent in Microsoft for just two years. Anyone who follows this blog knows just how excited I am about Photosynth and Seadragon. I got in touch with Don Lindsay, director for design at Microsoft Live Labs to find out a little about the history and what is going on behind the scenes. Don also shares a little about his interesting past and contributions to the next version of Windows.

Microsofts Ozzie to head another new Microsoft lab

You may have heard of Microsoft’s Live Labs, Office Labs, adCenter Labs. Get ready to add one more Microsoft incubator that is designed to speed up the delivery of Microsoft-created innovations to market: Startup Labs.

Startup Labs falls under Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie’s organization. Like the other aforementioned Microsoft Labs, Startup Labs will incorporate multiple product-development projects. Unlike Microsoft’s other incubators, some of the Startup Labs projects will be in early prototype stage, while others will be in beta and beyond. As with Microsoft’s other labs, the focus is on building a commercial product, rather than on research for research’s sake.

Microsoft Live Labs Listas Tech Preview

Microsoft Live Labs has unveiled Listas, a tool for the creation, management and sharing of lists, notes, favourites, and similar services. It allows adding, editing and sharing lists with others for reading or wiki-style editing, as well as the discovery of the public lists of other users. The Listas Community Section gives members (Live ID required) a number of highlights of the most popular and random items from around the community of public lists such as the most used tags, the hottest lists, and prolific contributors. Adding other people’s lists (or any RSS feed) to your own Listas is also possible. With the Listas Toolbar for Internet Explorer, it is possible to create lists from anything found on a web page: search results, wish lists, videos and so on.

First look: Listas by Microsoft Live Labs

Larry Larsen: Raj Jain stops by from Live Labs to show me their latest technical preview. Listas is a list management system. It's a way for you to create lists of anything you like and store them on a central place. You can invite others to participate in your lists, and you can publish them to the web or an RSS feed.

You could keep a real time grocery list online, invite family members to add to it, and subscribe to it on your phone. You could use it as a to-do list and feed it into your Sidebar using a PopFly RSS block.

Listas also has some nice template features to make it easy to build lists from search results and web sites you browse. It's in the process of going online now, so go give it a try.

Windows Live PhotoZoom Alpha: Silverlight powers new Microsoft Live Labs project

There's a new project brewing in Microsoft Live Labs, Windows Live PhotoZoom. This alpha project from Ray Ozzie's Concept Development Team is Silverlight based and allows seamless zoom controls on consumer photos in a web based application. PhotoZoom also makes use of the Photosynth / Seadragon technology developed by Live Labs, which most recently has been seen in the http://www.on10.net/Blogs/larr y/bbc-launches-six-photosynth- collections/>Photosynth collections released by the BBC. While you may not yet be able to recreate the BBC's work, PhotoZoom is another step towards this.

According to Matt Augustine of the PhotoZoom team, "PhotoZoom is an experimental site that brings the zooming capabilities first shown during the Silverlight demos in the Mix07 keynote to consumer photography." Note that the currently available alpha/beta builds of Silverlight do not feature the zooming feature that is required for PhotoZoom, so the timeline for this Live Labs project being released is dependent on when this Silverlight update becomes public...

Photosynth Technology Preview Launched

Microsoft have launched a Technology Preview of Photosynth, an innovative three-dimensional photo viewer created by Live Labs.

Photosynth "takes a large collection of photos of a place or an object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed three-dimensional space, giving viewers the sensation of smoothly gliding around from every angle.

"The scene can be constructed regardless of whether the photos are from a single or multiple sources. It?s like a hybrid of a slide show and a gaming experience that lets the viewer zoom in to see greater detail or zoom out for a more expansive view."

The Tech Preview includes a few sample collections for viewing, but in the future you'll be able to "photosynthesize" your own photos.
