28.06.2007Windows Live OneCare 2.5 beta ending, perpetual beta begins.
According to sources, following the official release of the final version of Windows Live OneCare 2.5, Microsoft sent out a flurry of e-mails to its
testers. First off, the software giant reminded its testers that the 2.5 Beta will expire on July 31, 2008, after which OneCare will no longer keep
itself up to date (both virus definitions and the actual software). Testers are urged to uninstall the beta and buy a full subscription, which is
offered to them at a discounted $24.95 a year for up to three PCs, until July 31, 2008.
With the beta wrapping up, Microsoft quickly
sent out another e-mail to certain testers asking if they wanted to continue to test new versions of the software. If the answer was yes, Microsoft
responded with a confirmation and then the next day, e-mailed that tester the details of the Windows Live OneCare Perpetual Beta program, an
invite-only group. Version 2.5 was all about under-the-hood improvements but based on what my source tells me about the Perpetual Beta, it seems that
Microsoft is now satisfied with the program's performance and is focusing on new features and functionality.

Community Convergence XXX
Welcome to the thirtieth Community Convergence. This edition has a wide range of articles on numerous topics and is not quite so narrowly focused on
LINQ as most of the recent posts have been.
The C# team has some wonderful bloggers, and one of the best is Eric Lippert. In this
Community Convergence, Eric writes exclusively about the C# language in general, and talks only infrequently about LINQ. At first I was disappointed
to see this, but when I read the articles I was reminded of how well Eric writes. His posts are almost always engaging, frequently humorous and
consistently instructive. If you don't already subscribe to his Fabulous Adventures in Coding blog, then you should at least consider doing so.
This trend away from writing about LINQ is also reflected in Jomo Fisher's blog. Jomo works on the LINQ to SQL team, and the fact
that the team is wrapping up their Orcas work is reflected in his posts on other subjects, such as the always intriguing subject of F#. I'm the
sentimental type, and so I find it sad that parts of Orcas are starting to shut down in anticipation of the product's release. Of course I and many
others will focus even more heavily on LINQ to SQL as the product nears its launch, but some of the developers and testers on the C# team are
beginning to raise their heads up from the LINQ work and look around them. Its the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one.

Microsoft's Treatment of Google Defectors
Here is a story revealing just how
threatened Microsoft is by Google. While senior partners can expect the full chair experience, some lowly staffers who are putting in their notice are being escorted off campus immediately. Why? Because they've
put in their notice to join Google.
In Microsoft's eyes, Google is Enemy No. 1. Anyone leaving Redmond for the search leader is
a threat. Not because they'll scurry around collecting company secrets as if Google's interested in Microsoft's '90s-era technologies. Departing
employees, however, might tell other 'Softies how much better Google is. If an employee is leaving for Amazon.com or another second-tier employer
which doesn't make Microsoft so paranoid, they'll probably serve out the traditional two weeks of unproductive wrapping up. So if you're planning
on leaving Microsoft for Google, pack up your belongings and say goodbye to friends ahead of time. There'll be no cake and two weeks of paid slacking
for you.

Text bug blights Trillian
Users of the popular Trillian
instant messaging client need
to update their software
following the discovery of a
serious security bug. The
multi-protocol chat
application from Cerulean
Studios is subject to a heap
overflow vulnerability because
of programming errors
involving the word-wrapping of
UTF-8 text.
As a
result, hackers might be able
to crash versions of the
application, thereby loading
exploit code onto vulnerable
systems. Viewing a malicious
message containing a specially
malformed UTF-8 string would
be enough to trigger the
attack. "The MSN protocol is
a known attack vector for this
vulnerability. However,
exploitation could potentially
occur using any supported
protocol," an advisory by
iDefense warns.

Apple Seeds OS X 10.5.7 Build 9J30 to Developers
In what has become an almost-weekly event, Apple has seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.5.7, known as Build 9J30, to developers. World of Apple
publishes the seed notes, which reveal that the lack of Safari 4 beta support is the only remaining issue Apple has chosen to highlight.
One week after the previous seed of Mac OS X 10.5.7 Apple has given developers another build this time in the form of 9J30. The rapid
development of Mac OS X 10.5.7 suggests a public release before the end of March.
Developers testing build 9J30 have been asked to focus
on new areas such as Flash Player, USB and Flash Drives, iCal and Widgets.
Apple seeded Build 9J22 on February 25th and Build 9J27 on
March 7th. The declining list of known issues, brief time intervals between seeds, and decreasing intervals of build numbers between those seeds
suggest that Apple is wrapping up development on OS X 10.5.7 and should see a release in the near future.

O2 closes in on exclusive deal to sell iPhone in UK
O2 is on the verge of
wrapping up a deal to
exclusively sell the Apple
iPhone in the UK with a view
to launching the iPod-based
handset by Christmas.
A number of Europe's
largest operators have been
linked with a deal to sell the
iPhone in Europe over recent
weeks. It is understood that
formal deals are now imminent
and that O2 is about to sign a
contract to sell the handset
in the UK. It is understood
that T-Mobile, Germany's
largest operator, will sell
the iPhone exclusively in
Germany, while Orange,
France's largest mobile phone
company, has won the race to
sell the handset in France.
The iPhone is due to launch
across those territories in
November.
There has
yet to be official
confirmation of any deals and
a spokesman for the UK's
largest mobile operator said:
"O2 has not signed a deal
with Apple." None of the
mobile phone operators would
comment on the process given
the complexity of negotiations
with Apple.
Competition among mobile
phone operators for a deal
with Apple has been fierce,
with the iPod maker understood
to have driven a hard bargain.
One source said that securing
the most talked about handset
of all time on an exclusive
basis and making the economics
work had proved a tough
balancing act.
