8.6.2008Can There Be 'Wow' in Vista Marketing?
Yesterday's Microsoft marketing bravado is just too funny. So now, 17 months after general availability, Microsoft will promote Windows Vista? Get
a life. The big talk and promises came from Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference, in Houston, where Brad Brooks fessed up about Vista
marketing mistakes and promised there would be response to Apple's "Get a Mac" ads. They say that confession is good for the corporate soul. I
say that it's not good enough.
Microsoft should never have abandoned the original "Wow" Windows Vista marketing campaign. It brought
new meaning to the term "marketing blitz." The campaign flashed by before anybody could blink and say, "Wow." Even if Microsoft executives loathed
the ads, better to keep them than have nothing. I remain convinced that the Vista marketing campaign could have been very effective. The TV
commercials were aspirational, potentially creating positive feelings about the then-mysterious Windows Vista.

I wasn’t
a big fan of the “Wow” campaign around Windows Vista. But its

“100

The new site lists 100 reasons users should take a
closer look at Windows Vista. No. 1 is “It makes using your PC a breeze.” No. 100 is “Because your network is the backbone of your
business (Network Diagnostics and Troubleshooting).”
Seeing Windows Vista for the first time may leave you searching for words.
Many people just say ‘Wow.’ Here are 100 reasons why,” the site says.
When Microsoft launched Windows Vista in
January, execs knew they needed a succinct way to explain why users should upgrade to the new OS. Not a list of 50 reasons. But something that would
roll off the tongue of salesclerks and PC makers in a 30-second pitch.

04.03.2009Video claims to demo breathtaking Windows 7 features
Many users are interested in whether or not Windows 7 will be an improvement in terms of
performance, but that verdict will only be out once benchmark tests are performed on the RTM build. That will be a while. Other
users have their eyes set on what features Windows 7 will offer over Windows Vista. Will Microsoft's next operating system add something that truly
makes the user exclaim "wow!" or make customers rush to stores the second it hits the shelves?
The current internal builds look
like Windows Vista, and this is completely normal because Microsoft begins work on the user interface last. Nevertheless, there have been minor
features added already (none of which are set in stone of course). Out of everything we've seen in these early builds, there really hasn't been
anything to write home about yet, until now.

22.01.2009Vista: One Year Later
One year ago today,
Microsoft released Windows
Vista to manufacturing. In the obligatory anniversary post we ask: Was it ready? Will it ever be ready?
The answer to the
first question is an emphatic "no." Vista wasn't ready. Hardware manufacturers and software developers weren't ready for it. The channel and
enterprises weren't ready, and consumers couldn't get it because Vista missed holiday 2006.
Microsoft promised WOW, but the reaction was, "What?" What is
different from Windows XP? What is wrong with the hardware requirements? What is the difference between "
Capable" and "
Ready?" What is this
Software Assurance requirement for Vista
Enterprise? What happened to the familiarity of Windows XP? What is
wrong with my Vista applications and hardware?
More recently the "W" question is "When?"--as in
when will
Microsoft release Vista Service Pack 1?

08.11.2007Vista Leads the 15 Biggest Tech Disappointments of 2007
#1. No Wow, No How: Windows Vista
Five years in the making and this is the best Microsoft could do?
It's
not that Vista is awful. The integrated security and
parental controls are nice, and the Aero interface is as whizzy as it gets. Searching and wireless networking are much faster and easier than under
XP.
It's just that Vista isn't all that good. Many of the innovations the operating system was supposed to bring--like more
efficient file and communications systems--got tossed overboard as Microsoft struggled to get the OS out the door, some three years after it was first
promised. Despite its hefty hardware requirements, Vista is slower than XP.

26.05.2009Announcing the Windows Vista Coach Tour
Nick White has written up a
blog entry regarding a road
trip planned between January
16 and 24, 2007. The trip is
regarding the "Wow" starts
now campaign for Microsoft
Windows Vista.
"I
and a few Windows community
influencers will hop on a
custom-wrapped Windows Vista
bus and visit major cities on
the East coast of the United
States: Nashville, Lexington,
Cincinnati, Columbus,
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia,
Baltimore, Washington DC,
Charlotte, Savannah,
Jacksonville, Orlando,
Gainesville, Atlanta and
places in between. We'll then
return to Nashville to wrap up
the tour."
You can
catch the Windows guys in the
cities as well as on the road.
Why would you want to? First
off, there will be a custom
designed coach bus based
around the Windows Vista
"energy" theme (Vista's
default wallpaper). This
isn't just Microsoft we're
talking about; AMD will be
part of the branding too. The
coach will be equipped with
free Wi-Fi so that you can
fully utilize, in the very
comfortable lounge area, the
numerous systems running
Windows Vista. An Xbox 360
will be present along with
refreshments, not that you
won't have anything to do:
the team is only too happy to
answer your Windows Vista
questions.
Secondly, features such as
Ultimate Extras, speech
recognition, Tablet
functionality, and the way
Media Center works with the
Xbox 360 as an extender will
all be showed off. Thirdly,
and what people are probably
most interested in, there will
be various prizes to give
away. Videos and still photos
of the trip will be available
on the Windows Vista Team Blog
on a day-to-day basis. For
those who already have the
Vista Sidebar, a gadget will
be available for tracking the
group on the road.

24.01.2007How Microsoft Can Save Vista And Windows Server 2008
Mitchell Ashley: Over the weekend my son Phil and I built a computer and a server for the test lab I use in my business (building computers is also a
hobby we share). One of the machines was a Vista box, the other was a server which I'm testing the Windows Server 2008 RC-1 Hyper-V software that
came out last Thursday. I'm sure I'll be writing about the Hyper-V RC-1 software in several upcoming blog posts.
It caused me
to think about 2008 and to look back at the 2007 ups and downs of Vista since its introduction earlier in the year. The Vista SP1 service pack is
coming in February 2008, while at the same time Vista is being compared to Windows ME, another Windows operating system Microsoft "didn't get
right".

18.12.2007Windows Server 2008 is 20% faster than Vista
It seems Microsoft may have a successor (or replacement) for Vista after all and it’s already been released. Windows Server 2008 isn’t
easy to configure as a desktop operating system but when done correctly can be 20% faster than Vista while retaining most of the same features.
Windows Workstation 2008 is not a product sold by Microsoft and must be configured from a copy of Windows Server 2008. It seems this version
of Windows lacks the “bloat” that is part of Vista. However, I am not sure what the author is referring to (but is likely talking about
unnecessary services). Of course this version of Windows was designed with developers in mind who covet speed above all else. Workstation 2008
includes IIS and Hyper-V for creating virtual machines.
A
Microsoft
employee and
third party website have created tutorials on how to
use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system. This is what I’ve been referring to as Windows Workstation 2008. Keep in mind that this
will have the same driver problems as Vista does, meaning, if a Vista driver doesn’t exist for a piece of hardware you still won’t be able
to use it with Server or Workstation 2008.
