AMD versus Intel, bye bye Intel

You may recall a few months back when AMD took out full-page newspaper ads to challenge Intel to a dual-core server duel. Intel declined to take up AMD on its offer, but the challenge got us thinking: what would the results of a dual-core desktop CPU fight look like? Many people equate Windows PCs with Intel Pentium processors (and soon will likely be doing the same with Macs), but we've seen dual-core CPU AMD systems power ahead of dual-core Intel-based PCs on more than one occasion.

Intel going for a new logo(?)

The new Intel processor, codename 'Yonah', announced for the 3rd of January 2006, will according to X86-secret simply be called 'Core Solo' or 'Core Duo'. Depending on the amount of cores (no way! where did they come up with that). It's more than 10 years ago since Intel created ax X86-architecture CPU that wasn't called 'Pentium'. Machines with Centrino CPU's will also get a new sticker-logo from now on, saying only 'Centrino', without the real CPU name. The amount of cores will still be mentioned on the sticker.

Intel to take 'Averill' to market as Centrino-like platform

Intel will next year launch its third branded PC platform, after Centrino and Viiv, this time pitched at corporate desktops.

As yet there's no word on the platform's go-to-market brandname, but it will almost certainly be based on Intel's 'Averill' platform. Averill was announced at the chip giant's Developer Forum in March this year for availability in 2006.

Averill is based on Intel's upcoming 'Broadwater' chipset, which will ship primarily as the 965 family, but also as the 946 and 963 product lines, it is believed. The platform also takes in Intel's next-generation Gigabit Ethernet controller, 'Nineveh', and its 65nm dual- and single-core Pentium D and Pentium 4 6xx processors.

IRS to tax Second Life/World of Warcraft earnings?

The Internal Revenue Service, the American tax authority, is looking into the possibility of taxing transactions that take place in virtual worlds, such as World of Warcraft and Second Life, based on the claim that revenue generated within these environments is nearly equivalent to the GNP of Russia and significantly greater than the GNPs of many more countries. The National Taxpayer Advocate: 2008 Annual Report to Congress, Volume One, states: "Where there is economic income, there is likely to be tax due from someone." (p. 217) Certainly it is true that monetary conversions from many such virtual world currencies into real-world currencies are both possible and fairly common.

World of Warcraft, meet Visual Studio

A top official from Microsoft's developer division showcased an array of new development technologies on Tuesday, including a demo of the game World of Warcraft running within the company's Visual Studio integrated development environment.

Scott Guthrie, general manager of the developer division, gave a wide-ranging keynote at Microsoft's DevConnections conference at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas.

But he seemed to especially capture the audience's attention with the WarCraft demo, which coincided with Microsoft's announcement that it would let partners use Visual Studio and its accompanying software development kit to target platforms besides its own.

WarCraft, a popular online role-playing game, uses a programming language called LUA. The Microsoft presentation showed a developer using the familiar Visual Studio environment to code in LUA and create some extensions for the game.

Intel Reportedly to Simplify Brand-Names

In the recent years the product portfolio of Intel Corp. extended tremendously as a result of platformization as well as transition to multi-core technologies, making it uneasy for customers to determine the product they need. But that is going to change, once the company performs global platform simplification process in the beginning of 2008.

It was already reported that the world's largest chipmaker will get rid of Intel Viiv and Intel vPro brand-names going forward, but apparently the changes will be much more substantial, according to reports from Japanese and Taiwanese web-sites. For instance, Intel Core 2 processors will lose their "Solo", "Duo" or "Quad" differentiators, but will be marketed under Intel Core 2 brand-names. Intel Pentium D and Intel Pentium Dual-Core chips, despite of the fact that they are based on different micro-architectures, will be sold under Intel Pentium label. Nevertheless, Intel Celeron, Intel Core Extreme and Intel Xeon trademarks will be retained.

Apple said to have third Beatle

Apple Incorporated seems to have reached a deal with former Beatle Ringo Starr for the distribution of his solo works released by EMI through the iTunes store. Starr's solo albums that were released on Koch Records are already available through the store. If the deal is official, Starr will become the third member of the group to sign a solo deal with Apple. Sir Paul McCartney cut a deal with Apple in May, and earlier this month John Lennon's solo catalogue was also brought to the iTunes store. With three of the four (the late George Harrison being the fourth) band members signed on to solo deals with Apple, there is once again speculation regarding bringing the Beatles catalogue, also distributed by EMI, to iTunes.

Blizzard nukes another 76,000 morons from World of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment announced earlier today that they had laid the smack down on more than 76,000 hacking idiots in that little known MMORPG World of Warcraft. In addition to the bans, Blizzard also nuked 11 million gold from the game's economy in Europe, Korea and the US. Thus helping us regular users to continue our addiction with less gold farming idiots to compete with and of course less of those wonderful super leveling service spam mails we all love now. Good riddance to bad cyber rubbish I say. Good on you Blizzard, and keep it up.
Here is what Blizzard had to say:   In our continued efforts to combat cheating in World of Warcraft, more than 76,000 accounts were closed and 11 million gold was removed from the game economies in Europe, Korea, and the US in the month of September. The closed accounts were associated with activities that violate World of Warcraft's Terms of Use, such as using third-party programs that allow cheating, and farming gold and items. These types of activities can severely impact the economy of a realm and the overall game enjoyment for all players.   Blizzard's popular MMORPG has nearly 7 million subscribers currently and the first expansion titled The Burning Crusade just entered into beta (with the NDA lifted no less) over the past day or so. The Burning Crusade will be out sometime later this year (we hope) and will offer a ton of new content and changes to the overall game.

Tech titans seek virtual world interoperability

Get ready to hop your avatar onto a hoverboard and fly seamlessly between Second Life and There.com. To buy armor or gold pieces in World of Warcraft or EverQuest II with actual dollars or euros. Or to pack up your 3D models from a Multiverse virtual world and take it with you to Gaia Online.

Welcome to virtual world interoperability: a new era where the many previously walled-garden virtual worlds can share content, currency and even identity, all in the guise of making life easier for end users and, ideally, for enterprises trying to leverage the Second Lifes of the world for businesses purposes.

Unfortunately for those who like that notion of interoperability, it's not going to be happening just yet. But a group of representatives from some of the biggest and most powerful technology companies on earth--including IBM, Cisco Systems, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Google and Sony, as well as from leading virtual-world developers like Second Life publisher Linden Lab, the Multiverse Network, Mindark and others--is hoping to change that in the not too distant future.

Yahoo Possibly Cutting 3500 Jobs

Hot off the revelation that Microsoft is no longer interested in acquiring it, search-company Yahoo may be planning to cut as many 3500 jobs by December 10th, mainly in its sales and finance departments. According to an anonymous source who tipped off Valleywag.com, " Finance will be cutting 50% of the workforce, engineering 10%, and sales and the rest of G&A 25%. "

Additionally, Yahoo may be considering cutting severance pay for those laid off, a move which Company Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen has been arguing for. These measures all seem geared at reducing expenditure at the troubled company, which has seen its stock price fall over 60% since the initial Microsoft bid. As of the current writing, Yahoo is trading for just under $13.00 a share.

However, despite the massive upcoming layoffs, Yahoo still isn't afraid to party. Says the tipster: " The company sent an invitation today for the annual holiday party on December 6 (four days before the biggest downsizing in the company's history 3,500 jobs). The holiday party is held at the San Mateo Convention center with a Las Vegas gambling theme. cost millions of dollars. Where is the fiscal responsibility? "
