Is Windows Server 2008 Workstation the One and True Windows Vista?
There is little choice, at this point in time, for end users looking for a new Windows client. And it is pretty much Windows Vista or Windows XP, or taking into account the evolution of the two products, Vista SP1 and XP SP2, with XP SP3 coming down the pipe "momentarily."

8.10.2007Using Windows Server 2008 as a SUPER workstation OS
Vijayshinva Karnure: Windows Server 2008 is the best OS to be released till date from Microsoft's stable. And the moment I got hold of the RTM build
I could not resist installing it on my workstation. I always prefer running a Server OS on my workstation... I have been running Windows 2003
disguised as XP (with all the themes and stuff) all these days.
So here is my tale of how I went about setting up Windows Server
2008 to look and fell like its desktop counterpart Windows Vista.

20.02.2008Server 2008: The Windows Workstation we always wanted
Mary Jo Foley: As
discontent over Windows Vista (with or without Service Pack 1) continues to
swirl, Microsoft is gearing up to launch on February 27 the “other” Windows: Windows Server 2008. Even though it is built from the same
core as Vista, Windows Server is different from Vista in a number of ways, from its role-based configuration options, to its built-in hypervisor.
Guest blogger Jason Perlow (
of asbestos-underwear fame) has been an
advocate for Microsoft making Windows Server 2008 available as in workstation/desktop form. Like the old Windows NT and Windows 2000 Workstation
products, a Windows Server 2008 Workstation would be a form factor for power users who don’t need all the Vista desktop eye candy, but care more
about manageability and performance.
winbeta.org -
26.02.2008Windows Server 2008 is 20% faster than Vista
It seems Microsoft may have a successor (or replacement) for Vista after all and it’s already been released. Windows Server 2008 isn’t
easy to configure as a desktop operating system but when done correctly can be 20% faster than Vista while retaining most of the same features.
Windows Workstation 2008 is not a product sold by Microsoft and must be configured from a copy of Windows Server 2008. It seems this version
of Windows lacks the “bloat” that is part of Vista. However, I am not sure what the author is referring to (but is likely talking about
unnecessary services). Of course this version of Windows was designed with developers in mind who covet speed above all else. Workstation 2008
includes IIS and Hyper-V for creating virtual machines.
A
Microsoft
employee and
third party website have created tutorials on how to
use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system. This is what I’ve been referring to as Windows Workstation 2008. Keep in mind that this
will have the same driver problems as Vista does, meaning, if a Vista driver doesn’t exist for a piece of hardware you still won’t be able
to use it with Server or Workstation 2008.

12.03.2008Windows "Workstation" 2008 Clobbers Vista in Benchmark Testing
Randall Kennedy: Just when you think you've got it all figured out, along comes another curve ball to keep you guessing. This time around it's a set
of
new benchmark test results from our old
friends at the exo.performance.network. Apparently, these guys heard about the brouhaha surrounding some
Microsoft's
engineer's blog post about using Server 2008 as a "Super Workstation OS" and decided to put the concept to the test. They loaded each
OS onto identical hardware, tweaking the Server implementation to make it look and act like Vista. Then they tested them under a variety of
productivity and multitasking scenarios.
The net result: Windows "Workstation" 2008 (i.e the tweaked Server 2008
installation) trashed Windows Vista with Service Pack 1, outscoring its desktop sibling by as much as 17%.
You can read all the
gory details over at the
exo.blog site. Suffice to say that there's a new option for
power users who are fed-up with Vista's sluggishness: Windows Server 2008, or as I'm now calling it, "Windows NT 6.1 Workstation."

02.11.2009Transform Windows Server 2008 to a Workstation
Emmanuel Bergerat: Few days ago I changed my professional notebook/laptop for a real working machine. Working on advanced MOSS 2007 projects,
setting up directly MOSS on my host OS is nice, so did I.
Windows Server 2008 Standard RC1 EN, bytes from MSDN, looks like the
best candidate for this.
Once setup (its Vista like setup screens), the OS runs smoothly, and working pleasure is here.
But, Windows Server 2008 is hardened compared to Windows Server 2003 R2 on security. Everything is here, but you need to dig in the
OS to have them...

01.12.2005Dell Offers New Desktop Workstation
On the same day that Dell detailed its new
"streaming computing"
solution for centralized desktop computing, the PC vendor also added to its workstation lineup.
Starting Oct. 11, Dell began
taking orders for the new Precision T3400 workstation, which can be configured as either a tower or desktop computer. Dell is offering the new
workstation for a starting price of $1,000, according to the company's Web site.
In September, Dell added to its mobile
workstation lineup the Precision M6300, which offers a 17-inch display and an SSD (solid state drive) option. Although Dell has been steadily losing
market share to rival Hewlett-Packard, workstations are one area in which Dell has managed to outperform HP. An IDC report early in 2007 found that
Dell had accounted for 46 percent of worldwide personal workstation shipments in the first quarter of 2007, while HP was second with 33 percent.
The Precision T3400 workstation offers a number of dual- and quad-core Intel Core 2 Duo processors, including the QX6850, which came
to market earlier in 2007, offering four processing cores, a clock speed of 3.0GHz, a total of 8MB of Level 2 cache and a 1333MHz front side bus. The
workstation also features Intel's X38 Express chip set.

12.10.2007Preview: VMware Workstation 6.5 beta surges ahead
They say market leadership has its privileges. When you're way out in front and the competition is just a distant blip in your rear-view horizon, you
get to take a breather. Coast a bit. Maybe focus on the big picture for a while. Yes, it's good to be the leader. All of which begs the question:
What the hell is wrong with VMware?
In the traditional desktop virtualisation space, VMware has almost zero competition on the
dominant platform, Windows. Yet it continues to innovateand at an alarming pace, no less.
Case in point: VMware Workstation 6.5.
Though only just entering beta, Workstation 6.5 is already causing a stir among the virtualisation faithful. That's because the feature set reads
like a veritable wish list to Virtual Santa from all the good girls and boys down in the in-house development and helpdesk departments.

22.04.2008Enabling Bluetooth on Windows Server 2008
Robert McLaws: It really bugs me sometimes that Microsoft imposes artificial limitations on Windows versions because they think features are out of
scope. Case in point is Windows Server 2008. Now, there is no earthly reason why WS2008 cant support Bluetooth right out of the box. An yet, because
someone on the Server team decided that servers dont use Bluetooth, if youre one of the thousands of people who use WS2008 as a workstation, youre
SOL. Think just installing your Bluetooth drivers, or enabling the Wireless LAN Services feature will do it? Think again.
Gil
Kirkpatrick posted a solution a couple of weeks ago, and it works like a charm. It involves modifying the INF files from the default WS2008
installation to install the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack on WS2008.

01.07.2008Build a Mac Pro equivalent workstation for 1/3 the cost
George Ou: Conventional wisdom tells us that a digital content creation and CAD professional had to fork out $6000 to $10,000 dollars for a high-end
8-core dual-processor workstation, but this is Real World IT where I say screw conventional wisdom. Ive put on my mad scientist hat again and brewed
something up for $2311 with equal or better performance than a $6803 Mac Pro (as configured in Apple screen cap to the left). Now granted you cant
run Mac OS X so that might be a show stopper for a Mac user, but there are plenty of Windows users who want something that will run just as fast. If
thats you, then keep reading!

27.05.2007Intel confirms 'Skulltrail' Quad SLI support
Nvidia will be bringing Quad SLI to Intel's upcoming 'Skulltrail' eight-core gaming platform - at least, that's what the chip giant is telling
companies it hopes will be selling the new motherboard.
Skulltrail will go on sale in Q1 2008 as the Intel D5400XS motherboard
based on the company's as-yet-unlaunched 5400 workstation chipset, a leaked Intel presentation slide
posted on Chinese-language site HKEPC reveals. Currently, Intel's top-of-the-line workstation chipset is the 5000X, which, like
the 5400, supports up two CPUs. The 5400 primarily adds support for a 1600MHz frontside bus (FSB ) frequency.
The D5400XS is
designed to take two quad-core Core 2 Extreme QX9775 chips, which are expected to operate on said 1600MHz FSB, contain 12MB of L2 cache each and be
initially clocked at 3.2GHz.

16.10.2007Intel CPUs expand Suns workstation portfolio
Following servers with Intels Xeon processors, Sun today introduced workstations based on Intels Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors.
Sun now has a third workstation family, adding to the existing models based on single- and dual socket AMD Opteron-based systems (Ultra 20,

in the case of a Core 2 Quad configuration, is Suns first (single-socket) quad-core workstation.
The Ultra 24 has the identical
outside look of its two sister models, making the Intel Core 2 logo the only differentiator to the 20, 40, 25 and 45. The Intel system is based on the
single-socket Garlow platform supporting six different processors the dual-cores E4400, E6750 and E6850 (2.0 GHz 3.0 GHz) as well as the
quad-cores Q6600, Q6700 and QX6850 (2.4 GHz 3.0 GHz).

23.10.2007AMD loses market share in x86 workstation segment faster than expected
More headaches for AMD: Intels
Core-based Xeon processor has
reclaimed virtually all market
share the company had lost to
AMD between Q3 2005 and Q2
2006.
According to a
report released by Jon Peddie
Research (JPR), the
workstation market continued
to show healthy 15.2%
year-over-year growth in the
first quarter of this year,
resulting in 674,000 units
shipped. Segment revenue
increased by 15% to about $1.7
billion.
However, it
was just Intel that was able
to take advantage of that
growth, expanding its presence
in the market to a level that
we have been used to several
years ago. According to JPR,
Intel claimed a 92.0% share
during Q1, up from 88.9% in Q4
2006, up from 89.1% in Q3 and
up from 86.7% in Q2. AMD in
turn, dropped from 13.3% to
8.0% in the same time frame
and is almost back to a market
share level that was recorded
by JPR for Q3 2005 (6.6%). ..
