MPEG-2 Patent Holder, Licensing Agent in High-Def Codec Dispute

The principal licensing agent for MPEG codec technology, MPEG LA, has sued Alcatel-Lucent in Delaware court. Its claim is that Alcatel didn't have the right to absorb Lucent's IP portfolio - which included patents on MPEG-2 technology - into a new and separate trust, after Lucent had already made a commitment to provide that technology through MPEG LA...

New WMV PowerToy & registry key documentation

The birth of the VC-1 Encoder SDKs will reduce the need for these over the next few months, but Alex has updated his WMV PowerToy and also revised our documentation about the registry key options.

Here's the new PowerToy. It mainly removes a few options that we determined weren't in the Format SDK 11 implementation, particularly adaptive chroma search and default adaptive deadzone.

And here's the new, hopefully final registry key documentation, reflecting the above and other useful tidbits we've learned.

Zune HD Specification sheet revealed, disappointment ensues

Microsoft has made available the specification sheet for the Zune HD, which explains the formats that the device can read and the approximated battery life of the device. The battery life for listening to music seems adequate but the battery life for watching videos seems very low. The Zune HD will be able to read the following video formats: "Windows Media Video (WMV) (.wmv) – Main and Simple Profile, CBR or VBR, up to 3.0 Mbps peak video bit rate; 720 pixels x 480 pixels up to 30 frames per second (or 720 pixels x 576 pixels up to 25 frames per second). Zune software will transcode HD WMV files at device sync.

Using MediaCoder to transcode videos for Zune

The Zune is great for watching movies, TV shows and YouTube clips of cute kittens, but sometimes it can take a good chunk of time and a bit of magic getting your videos ready and loaded on the Zune. Theres nothing worse than having spent a good 30 minutes transcoding an axxo-ripped XVID movie (yes you know what Im talking about) into WMV, added to the Zune library for it to spend another 30 minutes transcoding it again because it wasnt the particular type of WMV it was fond of.

DivX support, classic Xbox games coming in Fall Dashboard Update

On December 4. Microsoft will unleash the 2007 Fall Dashboard Update on the throngs of waiting Xbox 360 users. While the company has previously announced many of the features of this new update, a new one has just slipped out: DivX and Xvid support.

In perhaps the biggest news for tech-minded gamers, codec support for video files will be widened, with Joystiq reporting that this will include MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec support. "What that basically means is that our users should find that most of their DivX and Xvid files will work because they're under that umbrella of the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec," Microsoft's Aaron Greenburg told the site. DivX and Xvid support has long been a requested feature from people who would like to use their Xbox 360 as a media hub, making this very welcome news.

Hackers Exploit Bhutto Assassination

Within hours of yesterday's assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, malware makers exploited the breaking news to dupe users into downloading attack code, security researchers said Friday. Searches for news about Bhutto's killing and the ensuing chaos in Pakistan listed sites pimping a bogus video coder/decoder (codec), said analysts at McAfee Inc., Symantec Corp. and WebSense Inc. For instance, WebSense found such a site simply by using "benazir" to search on Google. Meanwhile, McAfee quickly located 10 sites hosted on Blogger.com, Google Inc.'s blog service, that were spreading the fake codec.

Windows Server 2008 Unleashed Promo

Thanks to dhan for posting about this in our Back Page News section. After the embarrassing Vista SP1 promo posted here earlier this week, it seems the sales team have got their act together and released a really cool promo for Windows Server 2008, called "Windows Server 2008 Unleashed".

It wouldn't take much to top the "Rockin' our Vista SP1 sales" video, but we here at Neowin think this is definitely a great effort, where a lot of thought went into displaying the power of Microsoft's' latest Server System.

The history and future of DivX

Davis Freeberg over at Zatz Not Funny provides some great analysis on the history and future strategy of DivX. On the company's historical success, Freeberg notes the importance of creating an eco-system around the DivX codec, both in terms of becoming the preferred format for "grey" content on P2P networks, but also the way in which the company reached out to consumer electronics manufacturers DVD players, media streamers, PMPs, and more recently Sony’s PS3 through its DivX certification program. The result is that DivX has become the consumer facing brand for MPEG4, despite rival offerings from Apple and Microsoft, for example.

Microsoft To Release Silverlight 2 In Late Summer

Microsoft has been working like gangbusters to create the perception that its cross-platform multimedia runtime Silverlight is a viable alternative to Adobe's Flash, and the vendor will soon put updated tools in the hands of Silverlight developers. In a Thursday blog post, Microsoft developer Ashish Thapliyal said Microsoft is "targeting late Summer" for its release of Silverlight 2.0, which is currently in its first beta release.

Silverlight 2.0 supports VC-1, WMV, MP3 and WMA content, but Microsoft has no plans to support the Flash video (.flv), used by Youtube and many other Websites, said Thapliyal. Microsoft's rationale here is to avoid paying licensing fees and to keep the Silverlight download file size as small as possible, he added.

"Silverlight isn't designed with an extensible codec model in mind, so there is no date/version announced for this," wrote Thapliyal. A second Silverlight 2.0 beta is due in May, and this version will be very similar to the final release, according to Thapliyal. He said no details are available about the roadmap for Silverlight for mobile, or Silverlight v.Next, also known as Silverlight 3.

Windows Server 2008 screencast - Virtualization 10 Minute Tour

Windows Server 2008 is going to ship it's next public release candidate very soon. Inside that release will be a CTP of Windows Server virtualization (WSv). WSv will be setting the stage for a whole new wave of technologies so with that in mind, I thought I'd give you a quick peek at the product via a screencast video I created.

Hypervisor

I love that name. It's catchy and kewl. It sounds like a supervisor for hyper space or something. It does of course refer to the new thin layer that is installed on Windows Server 2008 also know at the virtualization parent partition. It's also a a term used industry wide so when you hear the term, it doesn't just refer to the Microsoft implementation.

Our hypervisor, code named "Viridian", is an installable Windows Server 2008 role. After installation of this role, you can start installing one or more child partitions in which to run your virtualization workloads. Installation of those virtual machines is fairly straight forward although there are some things you need to be aware of.

Take a look at the screencast and go on a tour of Windows Server virtualization (WSv). The video is a little over ten minutes in length and I tried to hit some of the key areas so you can get a quick technical overview of the product. If you want to save this local and review it offline, please right mouse click the second link and "SAVE AS".

Media player users beware: move vulns ahead

Security researchers are warning that popular media players offered by Microsoft and AOL are vulnerable to attacks that can completely compromise a user's PC.

Attack code has already been released for the bug, which has been confirmed in a codec used by older versions of Windows Media Player, made by Microsoft, and in AOL's Winamp. A Symantec researcher has warned that users of other players may also be at risk because the vulnerability itself resides in a commonly used MP4 codec produced by a company called 3ivx Technologies.

"The exploit works by supplying victims with a maliciously formed MP4 file," Raymond Ball wrote for Symantec's DeepSight Threat Management System. "When a victim unknowingly clicks a link that appears safe, the MP4 content is delivered, causing the exploit to run."
