IE Mobile 6 to be available on new WM 6.1 smartphones

Microsoft will be rolling out Windows Mobile 6.1 AKU 1.4 bundled with IE Mobile 6 for all the new Windows Phones until Windows Mobile 6.5 is released. Glad that Microsoft is upgrading their mobile browser and not delaying it further. Microsoft had decided earlier that IE Mobile 6 will not be made available as an upgrade or download for existing Windows Phones saying that the current hardware cannot support IE 6. "Regarding making IE Mobile available as a separate download or update, the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices.

Windows Live Mail to succeed OE, WM, WLMd

With the launch of Windows Live Hotmail, Microsoft has announced Windows Live Mail, the desktop client that is reportedly meant to succeed Outlook Express and Vista's Windows Mail by replacing Windows Live Mail desktop, currently in beta. The first beta build of Windows Live Mail, available in a few short weeks, is supposed to incorporate features of all three of the aforementioned applications.

With the name change there are a few features that will be added to the current WLMd software. First off, an improved user interface with Aero support will give you control of your e-mail, without any graphical advertisements. Note that the loophole for textual ads was left wide open. Setup and account migration improvements should cut down the steps to get started with the client. Taking from OE and WM, S/MIME and LDAP support will be added to WLM. The new client is also being touted as faster and more robust than WLMd. As before, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista will be the two supported operating systems.

WinHEC 2008 Kick-Off Keynote

Today was the kick-off for this year's WinHEC conference, bringing together engineers and developers from around the world.

John DeVaan and Steven Sinofsky took the stage and talked a bit about Windows 7's improvements deep within the software, and also on the hardware side.

He quickly got to the point about the planned release cycle of Windows 7. He said that, unlike Vista, they are committed to shipping reliable builds of 7, and this time, they will be on time.

Keep reading, and view links to the keynotes by following the "Read More" link below...

Contrary to popular belief, the same M3 (6801) build that was given to PDC attendees was given to the lucky people at WinHEC. Also, they have confirmed that unlike many predictions, the first public beta will not be released in December; rather, it will be released in “early 2009.

To touch the boot time topic, they did a demonstration, showing that even in this early pre-beta build, Windows 7 boots a few seconds faster than Vista does. Also to improve boot times, Microsoft has made an improvement in the way it loads device drivers; instead of loading them serially, it loads them in parallel to eliminate a numerous amount of services from starting up at boot.

Trimming down the CPU usage also meant trimming down quite a few resources. As a result of their compaction efforts, he spent a long time during the keynote demonstrating that Windows 7 can easily and quickly run on an Asus Eee PC with only 1GB of RAM.

A powerful Operating System, incredibly fast hardware, crippled with only an hour of battery life is not a computer user’s dream. Microsoft realizes that, and has worked very hard on fine-tuning Win7’s kernel and tweaking the system clock, all in an effort to achieve the idle state we all long for. Making the CPU idle more often and longer will definitely boost the life we get out of our batteries.

Aside from all of the core components of Windows that were presented, was the ‘Device Stage’ and some major improvements in Media Center, such as touch support, the inclusion of the long-rumored “Fiji functionality, as well as trimming the boot time of Media Center to make it a more comfortable experience.

If you’d like to watch today’s keynote first-hand, it’s available on the WinHEC site in one of three formats:

WinHEC 2008 Live Keynote

Steven Sinofsky and Jon DeVaan are just about to kick start WinHEC 2008 with their keynotes.

Both are expected to introduce Windows 7 and show you what it can do, from advancements in core components and architecture to improvements in user interface, device support, graphics, media, and more.

Tune in for further Windows 7 goodness and some focus on the hardware side for Windows 7.

09:18 PST: Just announced 11% minimum better battery life for laptops on DVD playbck with Windows 7. That's around 20 mins extra on any laptop. Some configurations will gain up to 1hr.

09:23 PST: Microsoft understand users are purchasing laptops over desktops and want to do a better job with shutdown times, battery life, performance and low CPU consumption. Microsoft has been testing various laptops and knows they can make the battery life better with Windows 7.

09:25 PST: Demo of 2 Vista machines on shutdown, one with an un-responsive service on shutdown that severely slows the shutdown process.

09:26 PST: MS have listened to feedback on the hardware logo program. Made it a lot simpler, aligns well with what MS wants to achieve with OEMs and system integration. Microsoft wants to simplify the software logo too with a similar system.

09:28 PST: Windows update data shows that 64 bit adoption is over 20% now in the US. Urging everyone to get the right 64bit support especially for drivers.
