Windows Mobile Crossbow (WM6) Leaked
Testers of Windows Mobile
Codenamed Crossbow (or Windows
Mobile 6.0) have leaked at
least 2 versions of the
pre-release online, along with
a good number of screenshots<
/a>. According to our source
betacollector the
pre-release is incomplete,
missing a few functions but
working fine.
No
Windows start orb here, that
seems to be cropping up on
everywhere on Microsoft
software now, but then again
WM6 is not yet final -who
knows if that will be included
in the final release.
The leaked version specs:
WM6PreRelease.rar (54177kb)
Build date 1/12/2006
(15341.4.2.0) Rom 2.00.02.pv /
External Rom 2.02
PDAVIET
Theres
also a second one WM6CB.rar
weighing in at 59608kb for the
MDA Pro / Universal or qtec
9000 that one is older than
the above mentioned leak.
As we can see, the start
screen is taking shape
pretty well. More news as we
come across it.

Windows Mobile 6 - More Information
Windows Mobile 6 has been
officially announced, released
and of course covered
before on Neowin's front
page. Regardless of this
"small detail", I'd like to
finish off with a third
posting that wraps everything
up with a bunch of quotes and
links. So, without further
ado, here we go: Scores of
additional mobile operators
and device makers from around
the globe, including Cingular
Wireless, now the new AT&T,
Chunghwa Telecom, Dopod
International Corp., HP, LG
Electronics, Motorola Inc.,
Palm Inc., Samsung, Sprint,
Telefónica, Toshiba, Verizon
Wireless and Vodafone, plan to
ship Windows Mobile 6-based
devices this year. Many of
these partners are expanding
large existing portfolios of
Windows Mobile powered
smartphones.
According to Lokeui,
all beta testers should take
note that the Windows Mobile 6
RTM build has undergone many
speed tweaks: " From
switching windows, going
through long lists like
contacts and mail, navigating
web pages, going back and
forth etc. At least 20-30%
faster IMHO ." Lokeui also
wanted to clarify the name for
the latest version of
Microsoft's Mobile OS. It's
either Windows Mobile 6
or WM6 (incidentally,
"Windows Embedded CE 6.0" is
the official name for the
latest version of Windows CE),
not:Windows
Mobile
6.0W
indows Mobile 6.x

Compare Windows vs Linux
Jon Box: For years, Linux has been formidable competitor to Windows - for some good reasons, but sometimes from folks who speak out of un-education
(typically religious positions). In years past, I've pointed out resources to clarify this (from my first blog pushing the Get the Facts campaign back in 2003, last year pointing out vulnerability
reports), and obviously others on my team do the same (Beth
talking TCO of Linux vs. Windows in 2006).
So, here's an update: there's new content on our Windows Server Compare site. To go along with customer stories, case studies,
pointer to UNIX and mainframe comparisons, the new pieces are...

A comparison of next-gen display interfaces
The world of graphics
technologies continues
changing at phenomenal rates.
It is often difficult for the
average consume to keep up
with all of the advancements.
Buzzwords like DVI, HDMI, UDI
and DisplayPort are all the
rage. But, what is behind
those phrases and how do they
relate to one another? We have
compiled the data into one
comprehensive, easy to read
overview.
If
you have been following
technology in recent months
lately, then there is a good
chance that you have been
confronted with one of these
display interface technologies
“ and there is a good chance
that you have had no idea what
these standards are about and
how they compare with
eachother. A recent
announcement of a DisplayPort
display by Samsung prompted us
to compare formats and compare
the standards feature by
feature.
Lets
have a closer look.

Microsoft slams iPhone as irrelevant
Apple's soon-to-be-launched
iPhone is " a great music
phone, and I'm sure it will
be fantastic and have an
interesting user interface.
However, it's a closed device
that you cannot install
applications on, and there's
no support for Office
documents. If you're an
enterprise and want to roll
out line of business
applications, it's just not
an option. Even using it as a
heavy messaging device will be
a challenge ." said
Microsoft's Asia-Pacific head
of smartphone strategy Chris
Sorenson.
While the
entry of the iPhone into this
market offers new options for
consumers, Sorenson believes
user familiarity with the
Windows Mobile interface, and
the ease with which companies
can buy and develop
applications for the platform,
will sustain its increasing
popularity and help keep the
iPhone out of the lucrative
corporate market. One hundred
and forty phone models already
run Microsoft's Windows
Mobile operating system, while
Apple's new device has yet to
hit the market. While the
iPhone will focus on
integrating phone, Internet
browsing and iPod features,
WM6 adds enterprise-targeted
features such as better
synchronisation of data
between mobile devices and
office servers.
Well, the two types of
devices aren't really worthy
of a comparison as they are
simply aimed at entirely
different markets. Right?

Treo 500v sports a revamped Windows Mobile interface
For all of you fervent Treo fans chomping at the bit to get your hands on the 500v, here's an interesting piece of information which may stir "things" deep inside your mind and body. Apparently, the
Windows Mobile-equipped smartphones will be touting a UI that's a pretty big step away from Microsoft's staid and standard operations.
(Credit: the::unwired)
According to a slow, yet detailed video we've seen, the new interface will be pulled
together using a completely revamped "start menu," (similar to the UI which Samsung is employing on its SGH-i620) which gives you much faster
access to applications and settings, and has a completely new look. Menus and application icons also appear to be a departure from what we've seen in
other WM devices, giving the interface a wholly unique aspect. Check the video after the break and see for yourself.
