Live Mesh Tutorial: Synchronizing Messenger Plus! Skins, Scripts Etc.

Now we know how to synchronize Windows Live Messenger content, how about doing the same for Messenger Plus!?

What can we synchronize there? We can synchronize installed Skins and Scripts! Saves installing/downloading all those installation files again! When I say synchronize here I mean as in have all of those available on every device, it will not change the settings on any of the devices, e.g. on one device you use Skin A and on the other Skin B this will stay as is. You can also synchronize your chat logs if you want. Unfortunately you can not synchronize your Messenger Plus! (Live) Sound Library (technical reasons).

Facebook Faces Up

As the social networking behemoth meets new challenges, three startup college networks are waiting in the wings.

Facebook has had a rough ride of late. Users complain about the site's frequent shutdowns, with some observers seeing the malfunction as a possible troubling security breach.

And though the news media continue to talk about the network's rapid growth and market dominance, commentators have expressed misgivings about Facebook's ability to sustain and monetize that expansion.

Now, with founder Mark Zuckerberg heading back to court Aug. 8 to defend himself against accusations that he stole the site's concept from ConnectU, another collegiate social network with its roots at Harvard, the vultures are on the sidelines, flapping their wings.

Microsoft disses Windows security to sell...more Windows

Matt Asay: I stumbled across this fascinating Microsoft tutorial today entitled "How to Justify a Desktop Upgrade." It's an attempt to coach IT professionals on how to sell desktop upgrades internally. Apparently the value of Vista is not readily apparent, requiring detailed instructions on how to connive and cajole into an upgrade from XP.

The most intriguing thing about the tutorial is its implicit rejection of Microsoft's older technology. Just a few years ago Microsoft was pitching the world on how secure and cool XP was. Now it's telling us largely the opposite...

Microsoft opens up Live Mesh for basic mobile access

LiveSide: After a great tip from one of our readers in our first Mesh tutorial, it appears as though the Live Mesh mobile portal has now also been opened up to the public. Available at http://m.mesh.com, the website provides access to the basic functionality of Live Mesh through the browser, albeit without the ability to automatically synchronise folders that comes with a native client application. Its a start however, so heres our quick walkthrough.

Thunderbird 3 release has wings clipped

Mozilla has pushed back its development schedule for Thunderbird 3, the next version of its email client. A planned beta of the package will now be described as a third alpha build. The first beta of Thunderbird 3 was due to come out at the end of September. It would have been followed by a second in November and a release candidate sometime towards the back end of January, according to a preliminary release schedule. This date is now likely to be pushed back, given that several features are not yet in place, but by how long remains unclear. The cross-platform email client has been available as an alpha for several months.

The revised description is intended to avoid raising the profile of the release when neither the product nor Mozilla Messaging are ready, according to a blog posting by Mozilla developer Dan Mosedale.

Microsoft hints at June for new Zune

Microsoft is heating up the Zune advertising and is hinting at a June for a "new product launch". We've had the hints that a new Zune, namely the Zune HD, could be surfacing this year but an interesting twitter update from the Microsoft Office 2010 team points towards June being the month of the Zune. The twitter post simply states "June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers" but was followed up after a flutter of replies from Twitter users with another tweet saying "New product launch, that's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre. :)".

Party like it's 1234567890

This is one of those tidbits only a true geek will appreciate. For those of us who are completely out of the Unix loop, the operating system measures time by counting seconds from January 1, 1970. Needless to say, quite a few seconds have passed in the past 39 years and today, at 6:31:30 PM EST, that magical number will reach the wonderfully sequential 1,234,567,890 mark. Yes, we all know this isn't something you'll go around bragging about to your friends, but, for the inner geek in you, wait for that moment and just smile a bit. A angel may get it's wings or someone may install a *nix client for the first time.

Office Live Mail in the Wings?

It sounds like the Office live beta is inching ever closer. The LiveSide blog has posted information on what could be one of the key components of the Office software-as-a-service add-ons that Microsoft is readying: A Web-based e-mail client known as "Office Live Mail."

It sounds like the Redmondians are working on two flavors, paid and free, with the difference being in the amount of storage allocated.

'Origami' Devices to Get Music Player Siblings

It sounds like Microsoft has another new small form-factor device in the wings.

There's a Microsoft music player/portable game player device, code named "XPlayer," that the company is rumored to be developing.

The XPlayer could use Transmeta chips, folks are speculating. It's not as clear what operating system it will run, however.

Microsoft definitely needs something to shore up the forthcoming Origami mini-Tablet systems; analysts are giving the recently unveiled ultramobile PCs (UMPCs) a thumbs down.

Hands on: Sony VAIO X Windows 7 Notebook

Sony took the covers off its new X series range of notebooks yesterday at a press event in London and Neowin was waiting in the wings for an early hands on. The new X Series is incredibly light and slim, weighing just 0.78KG (including battery). It's hard to describe just how elegant and slim this notebook is, the chasis measures no more than 13.9mm in width at any point across its body. It's so light that Sony is claiming the X series is the "world's lightest laptop." Sony has designed this latest notebook for portability, performance and style. Marketed towards business travelers, this ultra-premium notebook is sexy in a choice of three finishes; gold, black and premium carbon.

Change Your Windows 7 Media Center Background

Sarah Perez: Did you know you can change your Media Center background? Neither did I until I read this recent post. Although not officially a part of the Media Center software, there is a way to do it. Its not the easiest thing in the world as it involves applying a new registry file and editing permissions. But if those sorts of things are second nature to you, its definitely worth checking out the tutorial on this hack.

Hacking a Media Center DVD Library

Max Zuckerman: If you're like me, one of the inputs on your TV is your desktop or laptop computer. It's one of the best ways to surf the web or share pictures and videos with others.

But my favorite feature, hands down, is the ability to have my entire DVD collection available to me in a very intuitive and slick-looking interface all on my TV. The best part is I don't have to physically insert a DVD every time I want to watch one. I can just browse my collection very easily all on my TV/monitor and hit "play!"

See how I set this all up in my tutorial on Channel 8.
