Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Review
A Little History
Virtualization software is nothing new, and dates back quite some time. One of the most popular examples for the end user was Connectix Virtual PC for the Mac. Since there are a pretty huge number of programs that are only available on Windows, this created a strong market niche to let Mac users run Windows programs, even if at reduced speed.
Virtual PC for the Mac, rather than emulating Windows, emulated the x86 architecture and the requisite peripheral devices, such as a video and sound card. This meant that emulation could work quite flawlessly, but also that any user would need to purchase a copy of Windows as well and then install it onto the Virtual PC. Virtual PC was a success and Connectix later created a Windows version which let you run most x86 OSes ? something quite useful for developers, enthusiasts, and IT professionals.

1.1.2006Virtual Machine Snapshots with Hyper-V
Robert Larson: Snapshots are a new feature of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. Snapshots are a point in time version of a virtual machine¦..what does that
mean you ask? It means that you can be running a virtual machine, take a snapshot and at any point you can select a previous snapshot and revert back
to that point in time.
You end up with the virtual machine in the EXACT configuration that it was when you took the
snapshot¦and I mean exact¦.memory, virtual hardware, processes, state, etc. So you can have a running virtual machine, take a snapshot, change the
virtual hardware configuration, format the disk and install a different OS, it does not matter, when you apply the previous snapshot it looks exactly
like it did when you took the snapshot.

The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.0 helps organizations maintain virtual machines that are stored offline in a Microsoft System Center
Virtual Machine Manager library. While stored, virtual machines do not receive operating system updates. The tool provides a way to keep offline
virtual machines up-to-date so that bringing a virtual machine online does not introduce vulnerabilities into the organizations IT infrastructure.
The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool combines the Windows Workflow programming model with the Windows PowerShellâ„¢ interface

Windows Server Update Services. As soon as the virtual machines are up-to-date, the tool returns them to the offline state in the Virtual Machine

13.10.2006Windows Home Server on a virtual machine
jaybaz WebLog: Here at Microsoft, when we talk about Windows Home Server, one
of the things that comes up pretty often is a question about hosting WHS in a virtual machine under Virtual Server. Most often people want this
because they already have one always-on machine (a doman controller, a media center PC, etc.), and they don't want another.
In
discussing the problem, a few key bits of advice have come up, and I thought it would be a good idea to write them down here.
One
of the key problems appears when you consider using the WHS to back up the host. It can certainly be done, but when the host goes down, restoring it
is a catch 22.
Dedicate whole drives
Take whole drives & put only one file on each - the .VHD. Make it as
large as possible.
Use external drives
Make all of WHS's drives external. Consider putting them all in a
single enclosure for convenience. eSATA w/ port multipliers may be a good choice.
Have a 2nd physical machine ready
It should already have Virtual Server or Virtual PC installed. A laptop is fine. Make sure it has appropriate ports for the WHS drives.
Recovery strategy
When the regular host goes down:
- Unplug the WHS drives
- Carry them to the 2nd host, and plug in
- Boot the WHS virtual machine. (You may need to create a new VM with the existing
.VHD files.)
- Restore the primary host
- Unplug the WHS drives
- Carry them back to the primary host, and plug
in
- Boot the WHS virtual machine

17.09.2008Troubleshooting KMS Activation - Part 1, the client
Windows activation is simple and straightforward if you understand the components. I have had a few customers that stumbled when getting a KMS online
and in every case it has been an issue with name resolution, network connectivity, or they simply did not understand how to use the keys.
Activation is designed to help you with deployments and sustain your environment even in the event a key gets lost. KMS is the simplest
of all the activation methods because you only need to worry about putting a key in one machine. You can then deploy new machines without having to
ever worry about keys unless your device will be off the network for more than 6 months.
This is the first of a two part series
to break down KMS troubleshooting in to a process that should help identify exactly what is at fault. I don't want to mislead or instill fear to
those who are just starting out - the process is normally simple by design. However, for those who have run in to trouble, I'd like to publish a
guide that will help you isolate and correct the issue you've encountered without spinning your wheels. Part 2 will be published next week with a
focus on troubleshooting the server.

Windows XP with SP3 virtual machine itself. To run Virtual XP Mode, users must be running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate with
preferably 2GB of RAM with at least 256MB available to virtualization, and a processor that supports hardware virtualization. Many times hardware
virtualization needs to be enabled in the BIOS to be functional.
