Announcing Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the 2007 Microsoft Office System

Office Service Pack Team: Were pleased to announce that Service Pack 2 (SP2) for the 2007 Microsoft Office system is expected to be released in the near future. Although we arent yet announcing the exact release date, it will fall between February and April of 2009.

Historically, we have waited to communicate details about service packs until their release (or very shortly before). As we communicated with SP3 for Office 2003 and SP1 for the 2007 Office System, we will be taking steps to increase transparency and visibility into the Office servicing model at the request of our customers. To that end, we would like to start sharing some details into what will be included in SP2 for the 2007 Office system. This is by no means an exhaustive list of everything included in this service pack and we will share more details prior to the final release, but we want to start communicating to customers what they should be aware of at a high level.

Microsoft to deliver Windows Vista SP2 before Windows 7

Microsoft has delivered a beta of Vista Service Pack 2 to select hardware and software partners according to sources close to Microsoft.

Last week the company put a place holder online for information about Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2. In it Microsoft acknowledges the existence of the beta and claims "No formal product support is available from Microsoft for this beta product".

According to All about Microsoft writer Mary Jo Foley the company will deliver SP2 before the highly anticipated Windows 7 release rumoured in the second half of next year.

It is widely expected that Hyper-V will be included with Vista SP2 alongside the usual OS improvements and hot fixes that a service pack brings.

Microsoft could reveal further information about Vista SP2 at the company's professional developers conference (PDC) next month.

Vista SP2 Released to Testers

Yesterday, Microsoft sent an email to select testers notifying them that the RC-Escrow Build of Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Server 2008 was available for download.

This Service Pack was made available to testers via Windows Update, as a standalone installer, and as a slipstreamed version. This service pack includes 656 hotfixes, and the usual tweaks.

At this "Escrow" stage in development, the Service Pack is essentially complete; unless major errors are spotted, this version will likely be very close to that of the RTM version.

One more public beta is expected before it RTMs however, so if you'd like to get your hands on one more beta build, your chance will come soon enough.

The only pre-requisite for the SP2 install is that you have SP1 installed; all other updates are included in SP2. Their reason for not making a cumulative update with SP1 already included is because of the huge filesize that would result. Most clients already have SP1 installed; new Windows Vista discs and Server 2008 was shipped with it included.

It would seem that, contrary to some recent rumors, SP2 will ship long before June.

FSX Acceleration, FSX SP2, DirectX 10 Support... Time to Dispell the Myths...

Sebastien St-Laurent: Now that the Acceleration expansion pack and FSX SP2 have finally RTM'ed, I can start discussing some of the specifics relating to the changes and improvements made to both of these. I know this has already been covered in other blog posts but for this post I wanted to start with an overview of the upcoming changes.

Of course, since I am one of the graphics engineers on the project, my future posts will focus mostly on the graphical improvements and also improvements and changes which are related to the DirectX 10 support introduced by SP2. Before I start, I wanted to note that we purposefuly RTM'ed on the expansion pack and SP2 at the same time so that the Acceleration Pack does also contain (and takes advantage) of all the bug fixes as well as performance and graphical improvements.

As Phil Taylor mentioned on his blog...

Vista Transformation Pack 9

An anxious crowd of VTP users hoping to get their hands on the next version of VTP has had their prayers answered today.

VTP9 has officially been released. Back, and better than ever, VTP9 is sure to be an eye-popper, even for those who have already been using VTP for years.

Some of the new features include:

- New Lightweight "Vista Rainbar" (A sidebar based on the Rainmeter API)
- Improved versions of the highly acclaimed ViStart and ViOrb pair
- A more stable version of TrueTransparency (for emulating the transparent 'glass' we all like in Vista
- 'Visplore,' a new file explorer that has a glass toolbar and built-in search
- Much, much more...

Perhaps some of the best improvements are a supposedly completely stable x64 installer, Windows XP SP3 compatibility and complete install customization right in the installer.

Without further ado, JCXP presents you with Version 9 of Vista Transformation Pack!

Windows Server 2003 SP2 Blocker Tool to be removed from Windows Update and Automatic Update

Ward Ralston: Just a reminder - It has been a little over a year since we released Windows Server 2003 SP2.  When we release a Service Pack at Microsoft, we want to make sure that IT professionals and system administrators have ample time to assess the service pack and choose when to deploy it.

As with other service packs, we offered support for Windows Server 2003 SP2 within the  Windows Service Pack Blocker Toolkit.  This allowed administrators to block the automatic deployment of Windows Server 2003 SP2 for a period of one year.

Now that time has expired, organizations should be aware that over the next month, support for Windows Server 2003 SP2 within the blocker tool will be phased out Windows Server 2003 SP2 will then be automatically offered, downloaded and/or installed (depending on user or administrator settings) through standard mechanisms including Windows Update and Automatic Update.
