When will you get Windows 7 RTM?

When will I get Windows 7 RTM?

Brandon LeBlanc: I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM. Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people “ or śaudiencesť “ would get the final RTM code.

While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.

Websites scramble to register forgotten Windows 7 domains

According to the APC Mag website, the popular xpmediacentre.com.au community site, managed to grab windows7.com.au, while Gavin Howard from IT training agency Which Training was quick off the mark to snatch up Windows7.net.au. Howard told APCmag.com that he was “probably looking to sell off” the domain name in the coming year, saying “I’d love to get $10,000, $15,000 or even $20,000 for it”.

While I doubt that Microsoft is losing any sleep over the many, many name variations for Windows7 domains on offer around the world, the case of Vista Windows Pty Ltd springs to mind; the company was "allowed" to continue using the domain because it was registered way before Microsoft decided on Vista for its latest version of Windows, as far back as 1999.

Microsoft Windows enthusiasts have in the past started their websites using the trademarked name variants of client (or Server) releases, and eventually, most succumbed to the requests of Microsoft to stop using them, for reward or the threat of legal action. It remains to be seen if customers become confused enough to believe that the Australian variants of the Windows 7 address, warrant any sort of legal action on Microsoft's part in the future.

For now, I wouldn't hold out for that 5 figure compensation, should you find a "forgotten" Windows 7 domain still available for registration somewhere.

OEMs Pick Up Windows 7 RTM Code Today in Redmond

Brandon LeBlanc: When we announced Windows 7 had RTMd on Wednesday, I posted that OEMs would receive the RTM code within a few days. Well, its been a few days! Earlier today, a handful of OEMs arrived in Redmond to pick up their RTM code. In the past when a Windows release reaches RTM, we have traditionally given some/selected OEMs the opportunity to come to Redmond and pick up the RTM code personally. I thought it would be neat to showcase these OEMs that came to campus today as the RTM code is handed off to them to begin preparing for General Availability (GA) on October 22, 2009!

What's new for audio in Windows 7?

Microsoft took the wraps off the next version of Windows Tuesday at its Professional Developers Conference, and the Web's abuzz with

first impressions and previews--most of which are positive.

It looks like Microsoft is making the right moves to counter some of the problems with Vista: application and hardware compatibility are top priorities, and most of the UI tweaks I've seen so far seem helpful rather than arbitrary, as many of the changes in Vista seemed to be. But the release of Windows 7 is still a year away, and there will no doubt be modifications between now and then.

But forget the big picture...what's in store for digital audio in the next version of Windows? Here's a quick rundown of what in known based on the very early pre-beta shown in Los Angeles...

AOL Top Web Site Under New Ranking

Nielsen/NetRatings plans to drop its old methods of counting pageviews to gauge Web site popularity, instead opting for a system where it would measure how long a user stays on a site.

With the changing scope of Web content, the old methods are quickly becoming less relevant. More important to advertisers and investors may be how long a user spends on a site, Nielsen seems to believe.

Technologies like AJAX and other dynamic page generation techniques lessen the need for a page to be refreshed, thus decreasing the number of recorded pageviews. Multimedia also carries the same effect.

Nielsen/NetRatings will begin reporting total sessions and total time spent on a site in order to figure out site popularity. From this, an advertiser could see how long a site is able to hold onto its users...
