In progress: Vista updates!
In progress right now is a beta testers chat with MS experts on the future of IE7 and Vista. Here are some parts of the chat that may be interesting to you... more to come shortly:
SamW [MS] (Expert):
Q: [17] When will you release the November CTP? Only 2 days left of November!
A: There will be no CTP for Vista in November because we are targeting for most features to be code-complete by end of December and resources efforts are going towards that effort. We should have a CTP in December before the Christmas holiday. These interim changes have no impact on our general availability target for Windows Vista. We are on track to deliver a high-quality Windows Vista in the 2nd half of 2006.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert):
Q: [54] Can someone clear up what seems to be confusion on the groups over the release of Build 5259? Did it go to selected testers or TAP because date of release and extent seems confused. I notice Mario mentions it today.
A: A specific, small group of partners received access to 5259. It is an IDW build and has not gone through the CTP testing process.

addition, that Microsoft didn't demonstrate at PDC, is overlay icons and progress bars in the taskbar. Microsoft now allows application developers

31.07.2009How to prevent Windows Vista's green ribbon of death
David A. Karp: Don't you just love it when something is so notorious
for a particular shortcoming that a new term is invented to describe it? It happened with the Windows Blue Screen of Death. It happened with the
Spinning Beach Ball of Death in Mac OS X. And it happened with the odd-number curse, referring to every other Star Trek film.
Now
it has happened with Vista's own Green Ribbon of Death, shown below.
The green ribbon is basically a progress bar, a screen
element Microsoft has sadly gone to great pains to excise from Windows Vista. But this particular progress bar is the harbinger of death for the
active Windows Explorer window, which, unfortunately, is not uncommon in Vista.

26.10.2006Sears First Out Of Gates with 2D Bar Codes
Efforts to implement retail 2D bar codes are accelerating: Sears, in conjuction with vendor ScanBuy, became the first U.S. retailer to begin a public
trial that started in mid-December at a store in Marietta, Georgia. As opposed the the traditional row of black lines (a 1D barcode), 2D barcodes look
like a grid and make use of a second, vertical dimension, allowing them to store more data. What Sears hopes to do is to allow a cell phone's
digital camera "look" at a small 2D bar code on an advertisement, which launches an applet. A server interprets the bar code and the phone then
launches a Web browser and deep-links to a page on that site, typically the Web site of the advertiser.

28.10.2005Vista SP1 vs. XP SP2 - Part Deux
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Following the
benchmarks I carried out last week, I
decided that the PC Doc HQ lab rats needed to pull a few all-nighters and carry out some more benchmarking tests on Vista SP1 and XP SP2. Is it
possible to determine conclusively which is the faster, more responsive OS?
One of the main criticisms of my initial benchmark
tests was that I overlooked the fact that, under the hood, Windows Vista SP1 works differently to XP SP2 in the file copy department. The difference
is down to caching and how Vista carried out uncached I/O while XP caches the files. On top of that is the further complication that the file
transfer progress bars are coded to work differently. Vistas file copy dialog box goes away when the cache is committed, while under XP the copy
dialog goes away while the committal is still pending. In other words XP is coded to appear fast...

When will I get Windows 7 RTM?
Brandon LeBlanc: I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you

Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close

While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to
get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.

Microsoft says some way to go on software piracy
Microsoft on Friday said it may take decades to tackle software piracy in large emerging economies, despite some recent progress, and called on Asian
governments to invest more in policing the practice.
"We are realistic in recognizing that we have to work diligently over
periods, that are really a decade or two, to make real progress in a number of these environments," Craig Mundie, Microsoft chief research and
strategy officer, told Reuters.
Mundie, one of the successors to Microsoft founder Bill Gates next year, said progress had been
made in countries like China and Vietnam in recent years to tackle software pirates, which cost the company billions of dollars each year.
However, he said more needed to be done to police the problem...

The future of the Firefox address bar
Rafe Needleman: I had an interesting discussion today about Firefox with Mozilla's
Mike Schroepfer and Mike Beltzner. One of the things we drilled into a bit was the address bar in Firefox 3 (download). It's being called the "awesome bar" at Mozilla, and while
it will end up with an official name eventually (the "smart location bar"), what it does for users can fairly be described as awesome. And as it's
probably the most important touchpoint in the browser, it's worth exploring not just what it means for users but for Mozilla as well.
