10.12.2008The horror: 'Ghost servers' that haunt your bottom line
The problem may not rival the movies Poltergeist or The Amityville Horror for sheer terror, but CIOs and data center managers are still well advised
to deal decisively with so-called ghost servers. Like celluloid zombies, these forgotten pieces of equipment are dead when it comes to improving the
bottom line, but they are very much alive when it comes to eating up IT budgets.
The unproductive -- and usually undocumented --
servers take up valuable real estate, consume increasingly expensive electricity and, in some cases, absorb ongoing maintenance and lease payments.
"You can find ghost servers in a lot of enterprises," says John Phelps, an analyst at Gartner Inc. "And the larger and more
diverse the company, the harder it can be to have a single group or technology platform that provides control over all corporate assets."
Sun Microsystems Inc., through case studies of two large corporate data center operations and anecdotal analysis of efforts with many
customers, believes that 8% to 10% of all servers in large corporations have no identifiable function. In the two data center studies, 150 ghost
servers were found in an installation of 1,800 servers, and 354 ghost servers were found in an installation of 3,500 servers.

26.09.2007Windows 7 Pre-Beta Build Leaked
"Oops!"
A build being demoed at WinHEC China this week, build 6956, was leaked by a show attendee, but in an unusual fashion, taking
advantage of a new feature in Windows 7.
The attendee managed to clone the demo machine's hard drive into a VHD file, a virtual hard
drive format that is fully supported in Windows 7. He then moved the image onto his portable drive and walked away from the booth, never caught by
any Microsoft employee or security.
Since Microsoft will probably not use a GPO to disable VHD creation on demo machines (it is a new
feature, after all), it will be interesting to see if future builds are leaked in the same routine. It's surprising that copying files to removable
disks wasn't disabled on these machines as the ones at PDC were.
Looking for some eye candy? Screenshots at the source.

11.12.2008When will you get Windows 7 RTM?
When will I get Windows 7 RTM?
Brandon LeBlanc: I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you
have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM.
Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close
out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people “ or śaudiencesť “ would get the final RTM code.
While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to
get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.

26.05.2009OEMs Pick Up Windows 7 RTM Code Today in Redmond
Brandon LeBlanc: When we
announced Windows 7 had
RTMd on Wednesday, I posted that OEMs would receive the RTM code within a few days. Well, its been a few days! Earlier today, a handful of OEMs
arrived in Redmond to pick up their RTM code. In the past when a Windows release reaches RTM, we have traditionally given some/selected OEMs the
opportunity to come to Redmond and pick up the RTM code personally. I thought it would be neat to showcase these OEMs that came to campus today as the
RTM code is handed off to them to begin preparing for General Availability (GA) on October 22, 2009!

25.07.2009What's new for audio in Windows 7?
Microsoft took the wraps off the next version of Windows Tuesday at its Professional Developers Conference, and the Web's
abuzz with first impressions and
previews--most of which are positive.
It looks like Microsoft is making the right moves to counter some of the problems with
Vista: application and hardware compatibility are top priorities, and most of the UI tweaks I've seen so far seem helpful rather than arbitrary, as
many of the changes in Vista seemed to be. But the release of Windows 7 is still a year away, and there will no doubt be modifications between now and
then.
But forget the big picture...what's in store for digital audio in the next version of Windows? Here's a quick rundown of
what in known based on the very early pre-beta shown in Los Angeles...

07.08.2009Websites scramble to register forgotten Windows 7 domains
According to the
APC Mag website, the
popular
xpmediacentre.com.au community site, managed to grab windows7.com.au, while
Gavin Howard from IT training agency
Which Training was quick off the mark to
snatch up Windows7.net.au. Howard told APCmag.com that he was “probably looking to sell off” the domain name in the coming year, saying
“I’d love to get $10,000, $15,000 or even $20,000 for it”.
While I doubt that Microsoft is losing any sleep
over the many, many name variations for Windows7 domains on offer around the world, the case of
Vista Windows Pty Ltd springs to mind; the company was "allowed" to continue using the domain because it was registered way
before Microsoft decided on Vista for its latest version of Windows, as far back as 1999.
Microsoft Windows enthusiasts have in the past
started their websites using the trademarked name variants of client (or Server) releases, and eventually, most succumbed to the requests of Microsoft
to stop using them, for
reward or the
threat
of legal action. It remains to be seen if customers become confused enough to believe that the Australian variants of the Windows 7 address,
warrant any sort of legal action on Microsoft's part in the future.
For now, I wouldn't hold out for that 5 figure compensation,
should you find a "forgotten" Windows 7 domain still available for registration somewhere.

12.12.2008GRAW 2 Officially Announced!
Today Ubisoft, one of the
world's largest video game
publishers, announced that Tom
Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter 2, the next
installment in the popular
squad-based action franchise,
is currently in development
for the Xbox 360 video
game and entertainment system
from Microsoft, the
PlayStation®3 computer
entertainment system, the PSP®
(PlayStation®Portable) system
and Windows® PC. Tom Clancy's
Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter 2 is being
developed by the award-winning
teams that created the
original Tom Clancy's Ghost
Recon Advanced
Warfighter in Ubisoft's
Paris and Red Storm Studios.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Advanced Warfighter 2 is
scheduled for worldwide
release in Spring 2007.
"Tom Clancy's Ghost
Recon Advanced Warfighter set
the standard for what we know
as the next-generation gaming
experience," said Laurent
Detoc, president of Ubisoft
North America. "With Tom
Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter 2, Ubisoft is
taking all the successful
elements in the original to an
unparalleled level of quality
-- the sophisticated
technology, weaponry,
graphics, story and online
gameplay will heighten the
intensity and bring gamers an
even more amazing
experience."
Tom
Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter received critical
acclaim and quickly became one
of the best-selling games on
Xbox 360 and one of the most
played games on the Xbox Live®
online gaming service.
Recently, the prestigious
British Academy of Film and
Television Arts (BAFTA)
awarded Tom Clancy's Ghost
Recon Advanced Warfighter with
"Best Game of the Year" and
"Technical Achievement"
honors.
Tom
Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter 2 builds off of the
events in the first game and
places gamers in control of
the U.S. military's elite
fighting unit, the Ghosts. In
the year 2014, the rising
conflict between Mexican
loyalists and insurgent rebel
forces has thrown Mexico into
full-scale civil war. Under
the command of Captain Scott
Mitchell, the Ghosts are
called upon to face an
imminent threat to the United
States. The fate of two
countries now lies in the
hands of the Ghosts as they
fend off an attack on U.S.
soil. Equipped with the most
cutting-edge weaponry and
technology, the Ghosts must
battle on both sides of the
border to neutralize the
escalating rebel threat.
- Groundbreaking
Visual Experience: The war
zone in Tom Clancy's Ghost
Recon Advanced Warfighter
comes to life as you navigate
through trash-strewn streets
and pick off enemies from
behind bomb-scarred
structures. The cutting-edge
physics and particle systems
will show you some of the most
intense and realistic
explosions, smoke, and
environment destruction ever
seen in a video game. Dynamic
lighting and shadows will
morph as real-time day/night
cycles and a constantly
changing weather system
require you to adjust to the
changing conditions on the
fly.
- All-New
Battlegrounds: For the first
time ever, the Ghosts will
defend U.S. soil from a
cross-border attack, taking
the fight to all-new
locations. The Ghosts will
battle enemies in mountain
terrains, barren deserts and
even on their home turf in El
Paso, Texas. Each environment
presents its own benefits and
challenges and will call for
fresh tactical
approaches.
- Vastly
Improved Artificial
Intelligence (AI): Watch your
back as rebels send their own
team members to flank your
position or gain vantage
points by utilizing vertical
gameplay to pick you off from
the rooftops above. Improved
squad-mate AI will now feed
you more of the information
you need with descriptive
commands like "enemy
spotted behind red truck
ahead."
- Improved
Cross-Com: The revolutionary
new Cross-Com 2.0 will give
the player more information
than ever before. You will be
able to see what your friendly
forces see in the top left
display and the click of a
button will expand that to
full-screen view for a clearer
and more precise picture. This
will give you a more
comprehensive view of the
entire battlefield. The new
Full Command View will allow
unprecedented precision in
developing and issuing
tactical plans on the
battlefield.
- Expanded
Support: Command lethal air
strikes with jet fighters,
gain mobile cover for
otherwise impassable
situations and replenish
armaments on the battlefield
using an unmanned artillery
MULE. Players can now heal
their team on the battlefield,
including squad leader Scott
Mitchell, with an all-new
Medic class of
soldier.

09.12.2006BAFTA Awards - GRAW wins GOTY
The British Academy of
Film and Television Arts (you
know, BAFTA) held their 4th
annual video game awards show
yesterday in the UK (no way?!
) and some of the results may
surprise you. The first award
that kinda caught my attention
was the award for "Best
Multiplayer" which had the
following
nominations:
2006 FIFA World
Cup
- Animal
Crossing: Wild
World
- Battl
efield 2: Modern
Combat
- Dung
eon & Dragons Online:
Stormreach
-
Guild Wars
Factions
- To
m Clancy's Ghost Recon
Advanced
Warfighter
Can you guess which game won
best multiplayer? Well if you
guessed Dungeon & Dragons
Online: Stormreach you guessed
right! Yeah, exactly my point.
Huh? A game that was mostly
panned by the press wins best
multiplayer above games such
as Battlefield 2 (which
wasn't even nominated, but
Modern Combat was?) or even
Guild Wars Factions itself.
Not to mention GRAW is in
there. But I digress, I am
not a part of BAFTA and I
don't know the criteria they
use to vote these awards. Just
seems a bit "wonky" to
me.
In any event, Ghost Recon
Advanced Warfighter took home
the "Game of the Year"
award, with LocoRoco, Lego
Star Wars II and only a couple
other games getting more than
one award each. Do you guys
think the nominations were up
to snuff to represent the
current gamer mindset? Do you
think the BAFTA guys are
insane? Do you think I am
insane?

14.07.2009Bethesda & Zombie Studios Creating "Rogue Warrior"
Thanks to
Vood
oo Extreme for the
scoop.
Bethesda and Zombie
Studios will announce fairly
soon (November 1st to be
exact), a new FPS game in the
style of Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter named Rogue
Warrior. The game uses the
Unreal 3 engine (doesn't
everything these days?) and
will most certainly not be set
in some fantasy world with
orcs and goblins. The game is
a counter-terrorist style
game, set in modern times.
Here's the information so far
on the game, but remember, the
game isn't quite officially
announced yet, so no
screenshots or anything
yet:
Featuring
four-player Live co-op and
space for up to 24 players
online, Rogue Warrior is
aiming directly for Ghost
Recon's counter-terrorist
comfort zone - especially with
its online play over Xbox
Live.
Bethesda and Zombie
are touting a multiplayer
tiling system, which allows
players to build multiplayer
maps from sections of other
maps. According to the
magazine, each level is made
up from three sections - you
choose one, the other team
picks another, the then centre
section is plucked out of the
list at random by the Xbox 360
(from over 200 combinations).
Opposing teams won't know
what the other team has picked
until they're in the game.
The main aim of this feature
is to stop players getting
bored of playing on the same
maps, according to the
makers.
The only release
offered was '2007'.
The
multiplayer "tiling" system
sounds pretty neat, and I'm
pretty sure eventually at
least, a PC port will be
announced as well. At least,
there better be. Or I'll get
angry. You won't like me when
I'm angry.
