30.07.2007Windows Vista SP1 Build 6001.16633 Info
Some very quick info that we came across regarding the latest release of Vista SP1 to testers. As Mary Jo Foley
previously reported, Microsoft have indeed made the latest build of Vista SP1
(6001.16633) available as a standalone update file to testers.
Build: 6.0.6001.16633 (longhorn.070803-1655)
Filename:
windows6.0-kb936330-x86.exe
Size: 684MB
Surprisingly, the update file is in the .exe format. Many (including myself)
were expecting Microsoft to deliver the update for Vista SP1 in the the new Vista/Server 2008-only .msu format used for current Hotfixes.

29.06.2006Office 2010 32-bit and 64-bit to be on the same DVD?
One of the most important details about the upcoming Office 2010 release is that it will come in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, helping pave the
path towards an x64 computing future. However, people have been wondering if these versions will come separately, or if Microsoft will choose to
include them in the same package. Ars Technica have unearthed some valuable details which hint that the latter could indeed be the case; Microsoft
will most likely include both versions on the same DVD. Ars Technica posted an error message that read the following: "If you want to install 64-bit
Office 2010, you must uninstall all 32-bit Office products fist, and then run setup.exe in the x64 folder.

30.11.2007Windows Server 2008: Terminal Services Architecture
Day Fourteen - we are past the halfway point. A good portion of the next two weeks will be devoted to Terminal Services and the new TS features. So
strap in, and let's get started ...
We talked about the
Windows
Server 2008 Startup Processes in an earlier post. SMSS.EXE is still the first user-mode process created during the boot process as in previous
versions of Windows. The change is that now SMSS.EXE launches a second instance of itself to configure Session 0, which is dedicated to system
processes. The instance of SMSS.EXE dedicated to Session 0 launches the Windows Startup Application (WININIT.EXE) as well as an instance of CSRSS.EXE
for Session 0, after which it exits. WININIT.EXE continues the startup process by starting SERVICES.EXE and LSASS.EXE as well as a new process, the
Local Session Manager (LSM.EXE) which manages Terminal Server connections for the machine.

01.05.2009Debugging a Per-User Installation Error on Windows Vista
Chris Jackson: Yesterday, a friend asked for some assistance debugging an issue with Windows Installer. It was one of those situations where you've
looked at the problem so closely, so many times, that you just needed another set of eyes. (They're close to shipping, so they've been doing nothing
but look at bugs, probably for a while.)
Some background:
What they're doing is a rather interesting use of
Windows Installer. They're using it to drop a setup.exe and then run it. So, they have a custom action of type 0xC02, which is a deferred custom
action, promoted to not use impersonation, which runs as an exe. This custom action spawns another version of itself (with different arguments), and
then the process exits so the installer can complete. The second version of this custom action then wants to uninstall the msi, as well as launch the
setup.exe. So, the msi is just a way to package up the setup.exe.
And, with UAC, it was breaking.
