Intel expresses concern about the AMD split and intellectual property

For the better part of two decades, AMD has been a producer of x86 chips, and at times sold more of them to consumers than Intel. So since x86 technology was conceived by Intel, what happens to it now that someone else will build upon it?..

Happy birthday, x86! An industry standard turns 30

Thirty years ago, on June 8, 1978, Intel Corp. introduced its first 16-bit microprocessor, the 8086, with a splashy ad heralding "the dawn of a new era." Overblown? Sure, but also prophetic. While the 8086 was slow to take off, its underlying architecture -- later referred to as x86 -- would become one of technology's most impressive success stories.

"X86" refers to the set of machine language instructions that certain microprocessors from Intel and a few other companies execute. It essentially defines the vocabulary and usage rules for the chip. X86 processors -- from the 8086 through the 80186, 80286, 80386, 80486 and various Pentium models, right down to today's multicore chips and processors for mobile applications -- have over time incorporated a growing x86 instruction set, but each has offered backward compatibility with earlier members of the family.

Vista SP1 x86 appears on Torrent Sites

In the last few days, certain Neowin forum members have reported that an image of Vista SP1 x86 Final has leaked to torrent sites. This file is supposedly a slipstreamed image of the final Service Pack 1 for Vista x86. It is allegedly available in various languages, including English. Since many believe that this is indeed the download that Microsoft will provide in the upcoming weeks, I would like to emphasize that this is not the case. This release is not official, nor is it genuine. I repeat: Vista SP1 has not gone final.

Neowin members are reporting that the file in question may be SP1 Refresh 2 slipstreamed or simply a malware-filled release. I would like to remind our members not to post links to any Vista SP1 build, unless it comes directly from Microsoft’s servers.

Windows Vista SP1 Build 6001.16633 Info

Some very quick info that we came across regarding the latest release of Vista SP1 to testers. As Mary Jo Foley previously reported, Microsoft have indeed made the latest build of Vista SP1 (6001.16633) available as a standalone update file to testers.

Build: 6.0.6001.16633 (longhorn.070803-1655)

Filename: windows6.0-kb936330-x86.exe

Size: 684MB

Surprisingly, the update file is in the .exe format. Many (including myself) were expecting Microsoft to deliver the update for Vista SP1 in the the new Vista/Server 2008-only .msu format used for current Hotfixes.

Transitive Offers Solaris/SPARC Apps on Windows

Enterprises planning to deploy Microsoft's Hyper-V hypervisor for virtualization can now run SPARC-based Solaris applications on their x86 Windows servers without porting or recompiling, thanks to QuickTransit, a solution from cross-platform virtualization solutions provider Transitive.

QuickTransit supports 64-bit distribution, so it runs on Solaris x86. Once QuickTransit has been installed, enterprises can install or copy SPARC-based (define) applications onto the x86 server. The applications will run the same way on the x86 server as they did on the more expensive SPARC servers without requiring a recompile.

IBM, HP lead server market thanks to x86 sales

IBM edged out Hewlett-Packard in first-quarter server revenue as both companies relied on a rebound in sales of x86-based computers, according to a market report released Tuesday.

X86 server sales had been sluggish in the fourth quarter as buyers used efficient virtualization technology and slowed their buying cycles to wait for the arrival of quad-core processors, according to the report from Gartner. That trend ended in the first three months of 2007 as global server revenue rose 4.5 percent over its level in the same period last year, reaching $12.9 billion.

The number of servers shipped by all vendors actually rose faster than revenue, up 6 percent to 2.1 million units. But intense competition in the market for RISC and Itanium-based servers forced prices down, Gartner analyst Jeffrey Hewitt said in the report. ..

Linux Community Questions x86 Server Numbers

The Linux community is questioning research that suggests the open-source operating system is losing market share to Windows on preinstalled x86 servers, saying that Linux is undercounted in those kinds of studies.

An analysis of IDC Quarterly Server Tracker figures for the past six quarters showed that Linux growth started to falter and reverse its positive course relative to both Windows Server and the market as a whole over that period.

The annual rate at which Linux was growing in the x86 server space fell to a negative 4 percent growth in calendar year 2006, while Windows Server outpaced the total growth rate in that market by more than 4 percent in 2006, the figures showed.

Linux Losing Market Share to Windows Server

Linux growth in the U.S. x86 server market has, over the past six quarters, started to falter and reverse its positive course relative to Windows Server and the market as a whole.

The annual rate at which Linux is growing in the x86 server space has fallen from around 53 percent in 2003, when Windows Server growth was in the mid-20 percent range, to a negative 4 percent growth in calendar year 2006, IDC Quarterly Server Tracker figures show.

Over the same time period, Windows has continued to report positive annual growth, outpacing the total growth rate in the x86 market by more than 4 percent in 2006, indicating that Linux has actually lost market share to Windows Server over this time.

Intel sees x86 everywhere in future

Intel expects to see Moore's law continue for the near future and also plans for its x86 processor architecture to extend across everything from small embedded devices right up to supercomputers, according to the head of its Digital Enterprise group, Pat Gelsinger. However, programming techniques are going to have to evolve to make better use of many-core chips.

Speaking at a briefing to mark Intel's 40th anniversary, Gelsinger gave his predictions for the future of computer technology, focusing on the key areas of Moore's law, many-core chips, the Intel architecture (IA), and visual computing. Gelsinger said that Moore's law would continue to extend into the future, and said that Intel has a roadmap for 32nm, 22nm and 10nm chips.

"I can recall in the past we thought reaching 1 micron (1 micrometre) would be hard," he commented, adding that as each milestone was reached, the way ahead became clearer, despite predictions that Moore's law was running out of steam.

RapidMind takes multi-threaded magic to x86 realm

Start-up RapidMind has gone mainstream by supporting x86 chips from Intel and AMD with the latest release of its flagship product that makes it easier to get more performance out of multi-core CPUs.

Come Dec., RapidMind will release Version 3.0 of the RapidMind Multi-core Development Platform - or RMMcDP for those keeping score at home. Past versions of the software were aimed at IBM's Cell chip and GPUs from Nvidia and ATI/AMD. Now, developers can fancy up their code for the x86 chips found in most servers as well.

RapidMind's software allows developers to keep coding away as they always have - rather than learning more complex multi-threaded software techniques or delving into the intricacies of various chip architectures.

AMD Confirms Plans to Extend x86 Instruction Set

Advanced Micro Devices plans to extend the x86 instruction set, with an announcement scheduled for Aug. 30, a company spokeswoman confirmed Friday.

Details of the announcement were not available at press time.

Roughly one-half to one full generation behind Intel in terms of manufacturing expertise, AMD seems to have hearkened back to its time-tested strategy of improving the technology of its chips as a means of improving performance.

"Developed to improve the performance of the highest intensity applications, the instructions help the developer community get greater performance out of each instruction by introducing functionality found only in specialized, high-performance architectures," said an AMD spokeswoman, describing the new initiative. ..

Apple to dial x86 for iPhone?

Suddenly, Apple's apparent downer on third-party iPhone software development becomes much clearer. Taiwanese moles claim the company is considering founding future iPhones on the next generation of Intel's Ultra Mobile Platform. Today's iPhones are based on ARM processor technology. Intel abandoned its ARM chip line in practice last year, but focused its efforts on its own x86 processor platform in spirit back in 2005. Since the two are incompatible, moving to x86-based iPhones would by necessity render all existing iPhone apps unusable on the new platform.

Now, Apple has managed such transitions in the past, on the Mac. First, it moved from Motorola's 680x0 family of CPUs to the PowerPC platform. More recently, it migrated from PowerPC to x86. In both cases, Apple did a good job, but the size of its userbase made putting big resources behing the migration essential.
