06.01.2009Announcing the Windows Search 4.0 Preview
Nick White: <...> The Windows Search Team is making available
Windows Search 4.0
Preview - a preview of the next version of desktop search for Windows.
Windows Search 4.0 introduces several improvements
I'd like to call out making search even better in Windows Vista:
- With Windows Search 4.0, the Windows Search Team has fixed
most of the reported bugs causing a majority of distractions users have seen since Windows Vista RTM - many of those bugs were reported by you.
- Great improvements have been made with regards to performance.Even now as Preview, Windows Search 4.0 has query response time about 33%faster
than search queries in Windows Vista RTM.
- The Windows Search Team has extended Remote Index Discovery for PC-to-PC search to work onevery
supported version of Windows. This makes finding information on other PCs running Windows Search 4.0 quick and less resource-consuming. Now Windows
Search can find information shared on a remote PC by accessing an index on that PC - and you will open files only when relevant to your search. This
will also work if the user's profile is redirected.
- The Windows Search Team has implemented Rollback Recovery where your search index
will roll back to the last known good state (this is good in handling disc write errors). If an error occurs, your index isn't rebuilt from scratch;
only the newly changed files are added to the index, making recovery from system errors not as disruptive to the machine or the user

Hitachi Develops New Visual Search Engine
Hitachi Ltd. has developed a
search technology that can
find images similar to a
specified image from millions
of images and video data in
one second.
The
technology assesses the
similarity of images based on
image characteristics
presented as high-dimensional
numeric information. The
information is acquired by
automatically detecting
information regarding the
images, such as color
distribution and shapes. The
technology can be applied to
video search as well.
The new technology
features (1) high-speed visual
similarity search using
two-step search clustering
technology and (2) faster
reading through optimized data
allocation on an HDD.
The former feature is a
two-step search technology
that uses both PC memory and
an HDD. When images are
registered, the technology
stores them while dividing
similar images into clusters
of similar characteristics.
Each cluster is represented by
the average value of the image
characteristics contained
therein, which is also written
to the memory. ..

New search site - Imagine Live Search
A new Live Search site
was brought to our attention
recently (thanks Jamie),
http://search.imagine-liv
e.com/. What's obviously
different is the sparse
homepage, notably the lack of
vertical search options, which
directs the users focus to the
search box and nothing
else.
Diving
in further, search results are
different too. There are no
vertical search options
present under the search box,
however they appear in the
right hand column with
suggested results
pre-populated. Users can see
the results from these other
search options alongside the
main web search results,
allowing users to quickly
refine their query as they
become more aware of what each
search option offers them.
While the related
searches option is already
present on the main Live
Search site, the addition of
Image Search and News Search
is a nice touch. The great
part is that Windows Live Maps
is embedded, auto-detecting
your location and presenting
local search results based on
your query. ..

Windows Search 4.0 vs. Google Desktop 5.5
Brad Linder: Microsoft released an updated version of Windows
Search, its free desktop search client the other day. And while there are dozens of excellent desktop search clients, including a few good free
ones, it seems inevitable that people are going to compare Windows Search to Google Desktop. Because you know, any time either company releases
something kind of cool someones assumes that it's just a ripoff of a product offered by the other. Or Apple.
Anyway, we've been
using Windows Search for the past few days and we thought we'd let you know how it stacks up against Google Desktop. Read on for the results.

Windows 7 supports search plugins
When Vista was released, its search features were significantly better than XP's. It's time to take a look at what Microsoft is planning to do for
search for Windows 7; according to information Microsoft has released to developers, search in Windows 7 can go beyond a local network:
"Windows 7 supports searching for documents beyond the user's own PC. Developers and IT professionals can enable their search engines, document
repositories, web applications, and proprietary data stores to be searched from Windows 7 without needing to write and deploy client code. This
enables end users to search their corporate intranet or the web as easily as they can search for their local files—all from within the same familiar
Windows interface."
Furthermore, developers can add Windows 7 compatible OpenSearch support to any existing searchable web application
by adding RSS or ATOM output (the desktop client can then have a Search Connector for the service). SharePoint Search Server can also query these
compatible OpenSearch services (as shown at PDC 2008).
