It looks like Microsoft are getting closer to putting Windows onto a portable USB Flash drive.

The All About Microsoft blog has news an an upcoming Microsoft Start Key. It is the same kind of thing as U3 but more windows-centric. The idea being that you could plug it in to a computer at home/school/work or even a public kiosk and have all of your settings, wallpaper, windows Live Contacts, favorites etc. with you.

Microsoft’s goal is to build an end-to-end StartKey environment — comprised of everything from system software on the flash devices, a software development kit to enable third-party developers to create products that can leverage StartKey, and accompany Microsoft applications and services, sources said.

Microsoft has some big plans for the small-sized storage devices.



Microsoft is working on turning USB-based flash drives into a Windows companion a new product known as StartKey that will allow users to carry their Windows and Windows Live settings with them.



StartKey isnt just for USB sticks; it also will work on other flash-storage devices, like SD memory cards. Microsoft is looking to turn these intelligent storage devices portable computing companions for users in both developed and emerging markets, with availability (at least in beta form) likely before the end of this year, according to sources who asked not to be named.

IBM 'security on a stick' protects online bank customers

IBM researchers have come up with a small device they like to call "security on a stick" for use in online banking so customers plugging into any computer can protect transactions and find out if Trojan malware is trying to steal funds.



Created in IBM's Zurich Research Lab, the "security on a stick" is still a prototype and being tested in a few trials in Europe, says Michael Baentsch, a senior researcher there. IBM, which unveiled the device today, officially calls it the "Zone Trusted Information Channel" because the little USB-based device works to set up a secure channel to an online banking site supporting it.

Microsoft Takes XP Starter Edition To Egypt, Turkey

Microsoft added two new versions of its bare-bones Windows XP Starter Edition Tuesday, one in Arabic for the Egyptian market, the other targeted at Turkey.

St arter Edition is a pared-down operating system that Microsoft introduced last year aimed at countries where piracy is rampant and incomes are low. Counting the new editions released Tuesday, Starter Edition is now available in nine languages and 32 countries.

The Arabic and Turkish versions will be distributed in partnership with the governments of Egypt and Turkey, respectively. "Building on our joint success in the Affordable PC Initiative 'PC for Every Home' that has delivered more than a quarter of a million PCs to Egyptian homes, we anticipate the new Windows XP Starter Edition will provide wider and more affordable technology access to the masses," said Dr. Tare Kamel, minister of communications for the Arab Republic of Egypt, in a statement.

Microsof t did not disclose specific pricing information for the two versions. ..
